2024 Kia Sorento: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2024 Kia Sorento gets a new look this year with a revised front end and a new dash design. In the world of family-size 3-row SUVs, it doesn’t get much better than the Sorento. With nine different trims to choose from and even more variation through option packages and accessories, the Sorento is practically the Baskin-Robbins of mid-size SUVs.

LX and S trim buyers get a 191-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. All other trims get a more robust turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, good for 281 horsepower. This engine is paired with a dual-clutch automatic, allowing driver-activated gear changes. Front drive is standard, and all-wheel drive (AWD) is available on all but the base LX.

Other 3-row SUVs like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, and the Chevrolet Traverse are in the running for your hard-earned dollar. All have pluses and minuses, but none can match the Sorento’s standard 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, another feather in Kia’s cap.

Kia also offers a Sorento Hybrid and Sorento PHEV, reviewed separately.

What’s New:

The Sorento gets a new look with a revised headlight and grille treatment, new taillights, an available panoramic curved display, and a new dash design. An off-road-oriented X-Pro variant joins the lineup, available only on the SX Prestige trim.

The LX gains more driver-assist systems, while new paint choices and interior colors for the X-Line and X-Pro finish off the upgrades.

Our Recommendation:

We’d go with either the Sorento EX or X-Line EX AWD for its combination of features, price, and power. However, unlike some competitors, you’ll have to move to the top-line SX Prestige to get features like a premium audio system and a heated steering wheel.

2024 Kia Sorento LX: $31,000 (estimated)

For just a tad over $30,000, the front-drive LX trim brings all the basics with a few surprises. The 3-row LX offers seating for seven and a host of standard safety systems.

Included in the LX Drive Wise safety assist package are automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, forward-collision warning with junction turning (warns of danger when making a left turn across oncoming traffic), lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitor with collision avoidance, rear cross-traffic detection, and automatic high-beam headlights.

Also standard is Kia’s adaptive Smart Cruise Control with stop-and-go technology.

Adding to the LX’s safety arsenal is Kia’s Lane Following Assist, which can steer the Sorento to help keep it centered in its lane (works at speeds below 40 mph), Speed Limit Assist (warns the driver when exceeding a posted speed limit), a driver attention monitor, Safe Exit Assist (warns exiting passengers of danger from approaching traffic), and a Leading Vehicle Departure Alert that notifies you when the vehicle directly ahead has started moving.

Finally, there’s a rearview camera with dynamic parking guidelines and a rear occupant alert system that reminds the driver to check the back seat before leaving and locking the vehicle. If the ultrasonic sensors inside the car detect movement, the car will sound its horn.

The LX features heated outside power mirrors with LED integrated turn signals, a matte-black rear spoiler, deep-tinted rear privacy glass, auto on/off LED low-beam headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, variable intermittent front wipers, and a rear wiper/washer.

Moving to the cabin, we find cloth upholstery, manual sliding front seats, a 60/40-split folding second-row seat, and a 50/50-split folding third-row seat. Also standard are remote keyless entry with remote start and push-button start, manual air conditioning with rear-seat vents, a driver’s one-touch up/down power window, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with Bluetooth, audio, and cruise controls.

Other LX interior features include an overhead console with a sunglass holder, a dual-level cargo floor, a rear center armrest with cupholders, sliding sun visors with illuminated vanity mirrors, and a 4.2-inch trip computer between the speedometer and tachometer.

Entertainment comes via an AM/FM/HD Radio with six speakers and a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment setup. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard, as does voice-activated Bluetooth. The LX includes USB charge ports in all three rows, with a 12-volt outlet in the front console and rear cargo area.

With the $1,325 destination charge, the 2024 Kia Sorento LX’s estimated cost is $32,325. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, look for a monthly payment of around $610. See 2024 Kia Sorento LX models for sale near you

2024 Kia Sorento LX Includes:

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – Allows wireless connection of Android or Apple smartphones, giving access to the device’s apps, maps, music, and messages.

Heated outside mirrors – These keep frost, ice, and snow from building up on the side mirrors.

Automatic high-beam headlights – The headlights dim automatically when sensing oncoming traffic.

2024 Kia Sorento S: $33,000 (estimated)

The S trim builds off the base LX, adding a few more features we think are worth the slightly higher price.

Available AWD brings a center locking differential and increased ride height. Kia’s Drive Mode Select varies throttle input and transmission shift points. It includes Sport, Eco, Comfort, and Smart modes, while AWD models gain an additional Snow mode.

Opting for the S trim brings Sport exterior styling with gloss-black front and rear skid plates, a gloss-black grille, gloss-black roof rails, black chrome window surrounds, gloss-black mirror caps, a gloss-black rear spoiler, LED fog lights, and gloss-black lower door accents. The S rides on larger 18-inch alloy wheels and features a proximity key fob that allows locking and unlocking by touching the outside door handle.

The S interior gets several improvements, including two additional second-row charge ports, dual-zone automatic climate control with auto defog, a wireless charging pad, and SynTex synthetic leather upholstery.

The S trim comes with a 10-way power driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support, heated front seats, plus a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob lever.

Additional driver assists include Highway Driving Assist (keeps the Sorento centered between lane markers when using adaptive cruise control), Navigation-based adaptive cruise control, and rear parking sensors. The S trim’s rear occupant alert system can be linked to the UVO app on your smartphone, sending a message when it detects motion inside the vehicle.

The S also gets a big bump in the infotainment arena, courtesy of a 12.3-inch touchscreen navigation radio with voice recognition, UVO telematics, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Kia Connect services.

Options for the S trim include a panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade and interior LED lighting.

With the $1,325 destination charge, the 2024 Kia Sorento S estimated cost comes to $34,325. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, expect a monthly payment of around $648. See 2024 Kia Sorento S models for sale near you

2024 Kia Sorento S Includes:

Navigation – Voice-activated GPS navigation doesn’t rely on a cell phone signal, so it works even in remote locations.

Smart Key – A proximity key fob allows you to unlock the Sorento’s door merely by touching the door handle. The fob also activates the push-button starter.

10-way power driver’s seat – It’s easy to find the perfect driving position with this seat. Includes 2-way power lumbar for extra lower back support.

2024 Kia Sorento X-Line S AWD: $35,000 (estimated)

The X-Line S AWD is simply the all-wheel-drive version of the S trim. It has the same standard and optional equipment but adds X-Line front and rear bumpers, gloss-black 18-inch wheels, and a few interior trim changes.

With the $1,325 destination charge, the 2024 Kia Sorento X-Line S AWD’s estimated cost is $36,325. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, expect a monthly payment of around $685. See 2024 Kia Sorento X-Line S AWD models for sale near you

With the $1,325 destination charge, the 2024 Kia Sorento EX’s estimated cost is $37,325. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, expect a monthly payment of around $704. See 2024 Kia Sorento EX models for sale near you

2024 Kia Sorento EX Includes:

Smart power tailgate – Stand behind the liftgate with the proximity key fob in your pocket or purse, and the liftgate automatically activates. You can also push the button on the fob to open or close the tailgate.

Wireless charging pad – Eliminates the need for wires or an open USB port. Place your phone on the pad, and it charges automatically.

The SX also gets Kia’s new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that blends with the infotainment touchscreen to create a massive single-piece curved screen. Other interior upgrades include ventilated front seats, LED overhead lighting, and Satin Chrome door handles.

The SX also gets a more advanced forward collision avoidance system and adaptive cruise control with machine learning. Standard upgrades include a 360-degree Surround View monitor, a blind-spot view monitor, and Highway Driving Assist 2 with automatic lane change assist.

All-wheel drive is optional.

With the $1,325 destination charge, the 2024 Kia Sorento SX’s estimated cost is $40,325. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, expect a monthly payment of around $761. See 2024 Kia Sorento SX models for sale near you

The front passenger enjoys a 10-way power seat with 2-way power lumbar support, and both front seats are heated and ventilated. Further adding to the Prestige’s luxury status are a heated steering wheel, a digital rearview camera mirror, and heated second-row captain’s chairs.

A 12-speaker Bose audio system comes standard, as do one-touch up/down windows on all four doors. A 115-volt power inverter allows plugging in everyday household items like a laptop, radio, or outdoor light.

FAQ

  • How much can the 2024 Kia Sorento tow?

The LX and S are tow-rated up to 2,000 pounds, while the EX and higher trims with their more powerful engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds. The X-Pro goes one better, topping out at 4,000 pounds.

  • How many miles per gallon does the 2024 Kia Sorento get?

Fuel economy figures for the new 2024 Sorento are not yet out, but as the engines haven’t changed, we expect fuel economy to remain the same as the 2023 model.

Look for the front-drive Sorento LX and S trims with the 2.5-liter engine to get around 24 mpg city/29 mpg highway/26 mpg combined. All-wheel drive lowers those figures to 23 mpg city/25 mpg highway/24 mpg combined.

The front-drive Sorento EX, SX, and SX Prestige with the turbocharged 2.5-liter engine earn around 22 mpg city/29 mpg highway/25 mpg combined while adding all-wheel drive nets figures of 21 mpg city/28 mpg highway/24 mpg combined.

  • Which 2024 Kia Sorento offers the most safety?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Kia Sorento a 4-star overall rating, with four stars in the frontal crash test, five stars in the side-impact test, and four stars in the rollover test.

The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) ranks the Kia Sorento as a Top Safety Pick, giving it its highest rating of Good in all crash tests.

All the Sorento trims perform equally well in crash testing, and even the base LX has most of Kia’s best driver assist features. The safest trim would be the SX Prestige, as it comes with every available driver-assist system in the Kia cupboard.
