2024 Volvo XC90: Choosing the Right Trim

Volvo’s largest SUV, the XC90, offers seating for up to seven passengers, although it’s less spacious than some rivals. Beyond its luxury trappings, the 2024 XC90 offers a choice of engines backed by various hybrid systems. The B5 and B6 models use the same turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and mild-hybrid starter/generator, but the B6 adds a supercharger giving it more horsepower.

The Recharge T8 is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and uses the same 2.0-liter gas engine but with two electric motors and a small battery pack. This setup gives the Recharge an all-electric range of up to 32 miles. If your daily commute goes no farther, it’s feasible you may never use a drop of gas.

All-wheel drive (AWD) comes standard on every XC90 trim.

Pitted against the Audi Q7 and BMW X5, the XC90 looks to be a bargain, although it’s priced higher than the Acura MDX, stretched Lexus RX, and Genesis GV80. The Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring PHEV is priced about the same as the Recharge T8.

What’s New:

Changes for the 2024 Volvo XC90 are modest. Ultimate B6 and T8 models gain laminated side windows, while the Ultimate B6 offers new 22-inch wheels.

Our Recommendation:

Considering why people buy 3-row luxury SUVs, the Volvo XC90 B6 Plus offers the most features at a fair price. Depending on your needs, you can go with 6- or 7-passenger seating, and the turbocharged/supercharged engine delivers a good balance of performance and fuel economy.

2024 Volvo XC90 B5 Core: $56,000

The XC90 B5 models employ a 274-hp turbocharged engine and a 48-volt mild-hybrid (MHEV) system. The hybrid starter/generator can’t drive the vehicle, but it does assist by adding torque when accelerating or passing.

Seating for seven comes from a 2-3-2 configuration, although the XC90’s third-row seat is most comfortable for kids, not adults.

Volvo built its reputation around safety innovation, so it should come as no surprise the XC90 comes loaded with active and passive safety systems. Beyond the government-mandated airbags, stability assist, and rearview monitor, the XC90 B5 Core has forward collision warning with vehicle, pedestrian, large animal, and cyclist detection. Front and rear parking sensors help keep you from bumping into stationary objects.

The B5 Core also features automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with steering assist, rear cross-traffic detection with automatic braking, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and City Safe with steering assist (see below for details).

Oncoming-lane mitigation detects if you’re drifting into oncoming traffic and nudges you back into your lane, while Slippery Road Alert warns when roads are slick or icy. There’s a driver-awareness monitor for detecting a drowsy or inattentive driver and power child locks for the rear doors.

Adaptive cruise control is standard, along with Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving that can steer, brake, and accelerate without driver input (although you must keep your hand on the wheel). Road Sign Information posts small icons in the instrument cluster showing the posted speed limit.

Considering its base-model status, the Core has some impressive upscale features. It includes steering-responsive LED headlights, LED front fog lights with cornering illumination feature, rain-sensing wipers with integrated wiper-blade washers, a panoramic glass moonroof, and a proximity keyless entry system that allows you to unlock and start the car without removing the key fob from your purse or pocket.

Standard 19-inch wheels look great, as do the bright silver integrated roof rails. The Core’s power-retractable side mirrors fold in to help when parking in tight spots. They’re also heated and automatically dim when sensing headlights behind the vehicle.

Moving to the Core’s cabin reveals equal measures of luxury and technology. Standard fare includes heated 10-way power front seats with 2-way power lumbar and driver’s seat memory wrapped in faux-leather upholstery.

A 12.3-inch digital driver display replaces a traditional speedometer and tachometer, with screens showing various information in Calm or Navi modes.

Also standard is a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, 4-zone automatic climate control with rear seat air vents, power-folding rear seat head restraints, four USB ports, and a 12-volt power port in the cargo area.

The Google-powered infotainment interface includes a 9-inch vertical touchscreen, a 220-watt 10-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. A 90-day trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio is standard, as well.

The voice-activated Google Assistant can help find a destination using Google Maps, and you can look for additional apps in the Google Play store. These Google Built-in services do not require having a smartphone plugged in and are free for four years, after which a subscription is required. The same goes for Volvo apps, which can help locate your vehicle, remind you when service is due, and preheat or cool your car using your smartphone.

Core buyers can opt for 20-inch wheels and the Climate Package, which adds heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and headlight washers.

With the $1,195 destination charge, the 2024 Volvo XC90 B5 Core costs $57,195. On a 60-month loan with 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to $1,079. See 2024 Volvo XC90 B5 Core models for sale near you

2024 Volvo XC90 B5 Core includes:

  • City Safety with Steering Support – This safety technology monitors the traffic ahead and determines possible escape routes if a stationary or slow-moving vehicle suddenly appears. It will then automatically steer your XC90 around the obstacle, if possible. If not, it will engage the automatic emergency-braking function.
  • Proximity keyless entry – If the key fob is on your person, the doors automatically unlock when you approach. Push-button start pairs with proximity keyless entry.
  • Adaptive front lights – These headlights turn in concert with the front wheels to light the way when negotiating a curve.

2024 Volvo XC90 B5 Plus: $59,900

Building on the Core, the B5 Plus gains the features of the Climate Package. Also standard are 20-inch alloy wheels, a surround-view camera, leather seating, an integrated second-row booster cushion, high-level ambient illumination, and interior wood accents.

With the Ultimate trim, you get a little more pampering and technology. For example, not only does the 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat provide memory, but so does the 10-way power-adjustable passenger seat. Both also feature adjustable side bolsters, 4-way power lumbar support, and a power seat-cushion extender. The front seats are ventilated, with perforated Nappa leather upholstery.

  • Head-up display – A graphical projector on the dashboard displays essential driver information on the back of the windshield, just below the driver’s line of sight.
  • Harman Kardon audio – This 14-speaker surround-sound system delivers concertlike sound.

2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge T8 Core: $71,900

Marrying the 2.0-liter turbocharged/supercharged 4-cylinder engine with two electric motors is the genesis of the Recharge T8 PHEV powertrain. One motor lands on the rear axle, creating the eAWD. This configuration puts out a total of 455 hp.

The electric-only driving range is up to 32 miles. The EPA combined rating (when this Volvo consumes gasoline and electricity) is 58 MPGe. Once the battery runs dry, the XC90 Recharge T8 Core returns 27 mpg combined.
