  • Exterior styling get a minor update.
  • Interior styling is heavily revised for 2013.
  • A new diesel engine joins the lineup early next year.

This year's New York Auto Show played host to an updated version of the compact Mercedes GLK SUV. In addition to updated exterior styling, the 2013 GLK boasts a heavily revised interior and an efficient new diesel engine for buyers looking to maximize their fuel economy.

While the refreshed GLK features several noticeable revisions to its exterior, most car shoppers will still recognize the SUV's sharp lines and blocky shape. In front, updates include new LED lights and a restyled fascia, while the SUV offers a new bumper and updated taillights in the rear. A new 19-inch wheel design is also standard on the 2013 GLK, while 20-inch alloys remain available with the optional appearance package.

Inside, changes to the GLK are more dramatic. In addition to a host of new, higher-quality materials, the 2013 GLK features an updated dashboard with new round air vents that replace last year's rectangular units. Other enhancements include an available wood trim piece that spans the entire dashboard, restyled climate and stereo controls, and - most noticeably - the relocation of the SUV's shift lever from its center console to the steering column. Mercedes also says buyers who opt for the full leather seating package will receive LED interior lighting for the first time in the upscale SUV.

The GLK also features major changes under the hood. Headlining the revisions is the newly available GLK250 BlueTEC, which features a 2.1-liter four-cylinder diesel engine that produces 190 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Expected to make its debut early next year, the new engine will only be offered in conjunction with a 7-speed automatic transmission. According to Mercedes, the GLK350's gasoline-powered 3.5-liter V6 is also updated, increasing from 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque to a more muscular 302 horsepower and 273 pound-feet.

Although Mercedes has not yet announced pricing for the 2013 GLK, we expect the updated SUV will see only a minor increase from today's base price of around $36,500 including destination when it goes on sale this summer.

What it means to you: Although the new diesel-powered GLK won't arrive until next year, it will likely be the most efficient Mercedes SUV available.
