2018 Dodge Durango SRT: Chicago Auto Show

What Is It?

The 2018 Dodge Durango SRT fills a niche that might not have existed until now. It's a high-performance 3-row crossover enabling six occupants to be driven around at speeds that should make a least one of them feel a little queasy.

SRT stands for Street and Racing Technology. In this version of the Durango, such technology means a muscular V8 engine making 475 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Bear in mind that 500 hp or thereabouts is more than enough automotive punch for any sane person. Dodge is being so old-school that it quotes this Hemi V8 engine's displacement in cubic inches: 392. That's 6.4 liters, by the way.

The company also claims that this is the fastest 3-row SUV, able to run the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds. Yet it can still tow 8,600 pounds. Accompanying all this power is a specially tuned suspension, all-wheel-drive system and 8-speed automatic transmission, as well as uprated brakes (from Brembo, one of the masters of stopping), aerodynamic additions, plenty of Pirelli rubber on 20-inch alloy wheels, and a sonorous 2.75-in dual exhaust system.

The interior comes with a carbon-fiber instrument panel, a flat-bottom steering wheel and second-row captain's chairs that are heated and ventilated.

Everyone who buys a Durango SRT is entitled to a day's instruction at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving.

How Much?

To be announced. Perhaps around the $70,000 mark.

When Can You Get It?

The 2018 Dodge Durango SRT hits dealerships fall 2017.

Other Cars to Consider

2017 BMW X5 M -- If there's one SUV that feels at home on a track, it's this one. The X5 M is seriously amazing. Seating for five.

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SVR -- Except that there are at least two SUVs that feel at home on a track. This is another. Uncannily quick.

2017 Mercedes-AMG GLE63 S -- Believe it or not, this 5-seater crossover SUV has even more power than the Durango SRT: 577 hp. Bear in mind that all three of these will probably be much more expensive than the Dodge.

Used Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG -- This luxurious 550-hp beast is a 7-seater.
