2019 Hyundai Veloster: Detroit Auto Show

What Is It?

A confluence of design ideas from stylists in South Korea and Hyundai's U.S. design center in Irvine, California, the reinvented 2019 Hyundai Veloster mingles familiar design cues with fresh ones. It returns with the unique 2-plus-1-door asymmetrical hatchback body style that helped the current Veloster stand out from the competition. The 2019 Hyundai Veloster's familial cascade grille is a bolder version than found on other Hyundai models. A lowered roofline streamlines the coupe's profile. Beefier fenders deliver a more muscular look. These are just the tip of the iceberg for this drastically restyled exterior.

In addition to the 147-horsepower 2-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine, a 201-hp 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder generating 195 lb-ft of torque is available. Either a 6-speed manual or an optional 6-speed automatic transmission shuttles output from the 2L to the front wheels. In addition to the 6-speed manual, a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters works with the 1.6L to motivate the wheels. Active Sound Design magnifies the exhaust note in 1.6L versions. Torque vectoring that actively applies the brakes on the inside wheels for better-controlled cornering is standard on all Velosters.

Hyundai is using the Veloster to showcase its all-new high-performance N Line. In addition to some styling exterior and interior tweaks, the 2019 Hyundai Veloster N gets a 275-hp 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission with downshift rev-matching technology. It will also have an electronically-controlled suspension with multiple driving modes.

Available advanced driver-assist/safety technology includes forward-collision avoidance assist, lane-keep assist, high-beam assist, blind spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert, smart cruise control, head-up display and driver attention warning. Veloster will also offer cutting edge connectivity and infotainment systems.

How Much?

Pricing hasn't been set, but the price of the current entry-level Veloster including delivery is $18,985.

When Can You Get It?

The Veloster is available summer of 2018 and the Veloster N at the end of 2018.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because...

A great warranty and a lot of bang for your buck have always been good reasons to buy a Hyundai. Although pricing for the 2019 Hyundai Veloster and its variations are still unknown, it's a safe bet there will be a lot of value. A choice of engines and the full suite of driver-assist/safety features make this Veloster a compelling pick.
