BMW X2 Concept: Paris Auto Show

What Is It?

The BMW X2 Concept could sway someone who usually despises crossovers. Here, unveiled at the 2016 Paris Auto Show, is the coupe treatment of an existing crossover SUV -- in this case, the compact BMW X1.

BMW need not have tried hard. They could have just followed the formula of the X5/X6 and the X3/X4: Take an SUV, give it a sloping roof, and mission accomplished. Instead, it's made the X2 into something more special.

Notice how the hallmark double-kidney grille takes on a chunkier, more 3-dimensional appearance. Those deep air vents under the headlights have never been seen on a BMW before. The styling cleverly disguises the rear passenger doors, making the X2 look more like a proper coupe, and that BMW badge in the rear pillar is just the right amount of cheekiness. The X2 looks more like a premium hot hatchback than the usual SUV dullness clogging up Trader Joe's parking lots.

Will They Ever Sell It?

If BMW doesn't make a production version, then something must have gone drastically wrong with the world, such as extraterrestrials taking over the planet and forcing all human beings to work in lithium mines.

Considering this is based on the X1, the platform and a lot of the tooling and hardware already exist. Imagine an X2 with a 228-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine driving either the front wheels or all four. Better yet, how about an X2 M going up against the 375-horsepower Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG?

But please, BMW, let the production X2 look as much like this concept as possible. Rumor has it that sales will begin at some point in 2017.

Why It's Important

BMW's crossovers have been a bit of a stylistic yawn in recent years. This hasn't exactly stopped them from selling, but rival companies are coming up with much more fetching designs. So if the BMW X2 concept points to a new approach, that can only be a positive thing.
