Land Rover Range Rover SV Coupe: Geneva Auto Show

What Is It?

There's the hype, saying the Land Rover Range Rover SV Coupe is "the world's first full-size luxury SUV coupe." And there's the history, which reminds us that the original Range Rover was only available as a 2-door model right up until 1981.

However, those early examples really weren't that luxurious. They were big favorites of the horsey set, but horses invariably involve mud. So rubber mats that were easily washable (by the staff, of course) held sway over fine carpet for quite some time. When Land Rover makes an extravagant claim about the Range Rover SV Coupe, then, we'll put the emphasis on "luxury" and quibble no more about it.

It's a 4-seater and if the buyer wants one color of leather in the front and another in the back, that's fine with Land Rover. So are massive 23-inch alloy wheel rims, something the company has never offered before.

Despite all the possibilities for personalization, there's only one engine. But no one should complain. It's a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that develops 557 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. With a standstill-to-60-mph time of five seconds and a top speed of 165 mph, Land Rover is also happy to point out that this is "the fastest-ever full-size Range Rover" along with enjoying a "peerless capability on a variety of terrains."

Should anyone want to drive their SV Coupe through water -- with or without a new option of Liquesence paint options (bringing a liquid metal finish) -- they can do so up to three feet. And it can tow 7,716 pounds. The heated and ventilated front seats are 20-way power-adjustable; the rears (also heated/cooled) are 10-way. And the semi-aniline leather used comes from one particular tannery that was established in 1905.

How Much?

This isn't an exact science because it depends on how much personalization a customer wants. Getting the door handles engraved and having one's coat of arms stitched into the leather upholstery naturally costs a little extra. But the basic cost is $295,000, and things go up (quickly) from there.

When Can You Get It?

First you have to put in your order, then the Land Rover Range Rover SV Coupe will be made especially for you, including a lot of hours worked by craftspeople. But act fast, because Land Rover is only building a limited run of 999 units. If you are interested, instruct your butler to click over to Chop chop.

Add It to Your Shopping List Because …

You're an executive producer on "Game of Thrones," and you're thinking of crazy ways to spend all the money you're making.

Other Cars to Consider

2018 Bentley Bentayga W12 -- None of these alternatives are 2-door models, but they are some of the most exclusive SUVs in the world. The opulent Bentayga W12 has 600 hp and sprints to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, which is unreal for something of this heft. Yours for approximately $230,000.

2019 Lamborghini Urus -- This is an all-new SUV from the famed maker of outrageous supercars. It's similarly bold and powerful, with 641 hp and a top speed of 190 mph. About $200,000.

2019 Mercedes-AMG G 63 -- This is the AMG version of an all-new G-Class. It's endowed with 577 hp and hits 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. Perhaps surprisingly, it's the least expensive among this crowd at around $150,000.
