Toyota FT-EV III - Tokyo Auto Show

Although the tiny Scion iQ hasn't even gone on sale in the US, Toyota is already showing off a fully electric version at this year's Tokyo Motor Show. Dubbed the FT-EV III and officially a concept car, the electric hatchback features only minor stylistic revisions from the automaker's iQ EV Concept, which debuted earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show.

While Toyota's wacky Fun-Vii concept stole the show and grabbed many Tokyo headlines, the FT-EV III is arguably more important since it's likely to reach production. According to the automaker, the small hatchback features a fully-electric plug-in motor and several lithium-ion batteries mounted beneath its floor that team up for range of up to 65 miles on a single charge. While that's not quite up to the standard set by Nissan's five-door Leaf, the iQ will likely benefit from shorter charge times, since it operates with fewer batteries.

While the FT-EV III concept features a wild exterior finish that includes graphics of leaves, flowers and electric plugs, the production model will probably resemble the Toyota iQ EV concept, which was shown in Geneva. Displayed with a plain silver exterior, that model featured only minor revisions from the standard iQ, which will be badged as a Scion when it goes on sale later this year in the US market. Unlikely to change, however, is the concept car's interior, which largely carries over from the traditional hatchback but adds graphics displaying current charge status and driving style.

What it means to you

Toyota hasn't announced any further details on the FT-EV III, including any plans for production, though the automaker admits it's a "near future" concept. If it does go on sale, we'd expect to see it late next year or in 2013 with a sticker price in the mid-$30,000 range.
