I’m officially declaring that the Subaru Crosstrek, a small SUV with a sportier reputation, has been hiding its big city personality. A recent visit to Ponce City Market in Atlanta left me with a variety of experiences that really made me appreciate the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek in its entirety. Most people think of Subarus, especially the Crosstrek, as cars that work best outside the confines of blacktop, traffic, parking decks and road construction zones. However, the Subaru Crosstrek is more versatile than that.
As I picked up some friends, one-by-one they started commenting on the appearance of the car. “Wow, this looks a million times sleeker than what I envisioned a Crosstrek to look like!” exclaimed one friend. “I’m really digging this light blue,” said another. Turns out the light blue color is actually called “Cool Gray Khaki” by Subaru — kinda strange, right? My friend was into it, but the color seemed a little flat for my taste. As for the interior, the leather was a bit on the stiff side, but it also gave the car a clean-cut feel.
After connecting my phone to Apple CarPlay, we were off to an adventure in Atlanta, not the outskirts but in the city. I found right away that I really like the ability to mirror apps from my phone onto the infotainment screen. It makes Georgia’s new Hands-Free law easy to follow.
With an EPA-estimated 23 miles per gallon city and 29 mpg highway, driving behind the wheel of this small SUV was nothing but smooth sailing. And I loved the weight of the steering and the steering wheel — it made me feel very secure.
Despite having a 152-horsepower engine (doesn’t sound like much), this Crosstrek felt quick and smooth. I have heard rumors that Crosstreks are loud inside, but I don’t think that’s accurate. I also suggest taking full advantage of the adaptive cruise control feature if you have it (part of Subaru’s EyeSight feature). This feature allows drivers to set the maximum speed, and a radar sensor does the heavy lifting, er, braking. Just one less thing to worry about when you are dealing with the ruckus that naturally comes with road trips with friends.
As I parked the car, I genuinely appreciated the tiny size of this SUV. When we got out of the car, I had to take a second look at it because I couldn’t believe how small it was considering it felt so big inside. While I have your attention here, let me warn you about parking at Ponce City Market. If you are not in the designated Ponce parking lot, there’s a good chance that you will get a boot on your car. Just trying to prevent as many mishaps as I can while I have this platform.
After a long day of eating and walking around, we decided it was time to head back home. I can’t decide if we left with great timing or bad timing because it started pouring the minute we got into the car. If you’re like me, you probably hate driving in the rain. Thankfully, the Crosstrek’s standard all-wheel drive gave me a sense of security on the road.
All in all, I think the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek is an awesome crossover for navigating a bustling city like Atlanta — with its small stature and big personality, I could see it becoming a lot more popular around here. Find a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek for sale
