Volvo has long been known as a brand synonymous with safety, though not necessarily with beauty. Over the last several years, however, Volvo has released several eye-catching vehicles that are making style conscious buyers rethink the brand. Enter the 2019 Volvo XC60 -– the Swedish automaker’s midsize SUV that simply oozes style, technology, luxury and, of course, safety.
Why’d We Get It
Volvo’s new line of SUVs has been received well by new car buyers looking for a slightly different take on luxury. We’ve been impressed with Volvos as well. In fact, the flagship XC90 even made our list of Must Test Drive Cars for 2016. So bearing in mind the excellent Volvo pedigree and current market trends toward SUVs, it only made sense to bring the stylish and technologically advanced XC60 into our long term fleet here at Autotrader.
When selecting our XC60, we opted for the T5 AWD Inscription trim level, which is full of bells and whistles to keep the next year interesting. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter direct injected turbocharged engine, providing a stout 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The robust 4-cylinder has enough pep to propel the sleek crossover from 0-to-60 miles per hour in a little under seven seconds, which adds to peace of mind when accelerating onto the highway and is certainly respectable by SUV standards.
As far as infotainment options, our XC60 is loaded with a 9-in Sensus Connect Touchscreen, Wi-Fi hot spot and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity. We’ve also opted for the higher-level Bowers and Wilkins premium sound system, in lieu of the standard Harman Kardon setup. In addition, the Volvo On-Call application with a 4-year complimentary subscription has also been included.
Our XC60 also comes equipped with a host of excellent safety and security options. There’s Volvo’s City Safety collision avoidance, lane-keeping assist, oncoming lane mitigation, road sign information, run-off road protection and emergency crash notification all on the midsize crossover.
The $7,350 inscription package brings blind spot monitoring with steer assist and cross-traffic alert, along with 19-in wheels and 4-zone automatic climate control. The package includes a wealth of additional features such as heated wiper blades, LED fog lights, power retractable mirrors, a handsfree tailgate, park assist pilot and power folding rear headrests. Even auto-dimming mirrors and a HomeLink garage door opener are included in the mix to make life easier. Yes, it’s pricey but we think it’s a worthwhile option.
With the $2,500 addition of the advanced package, the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous Drive System with adaptive cruise control, a 360-degreesurround-view camera, a head up display, full LED headlights, and a high-pressure headlight cleaning system are included as well.
We’ve also decided to get the Nappa leather with massage package for $2,200. This includes Nappa leather upholstery in the cabin, and the addition of backrest massage and power-adjustable side support for the front seats. And just to make things extra cozy for the coming winter months, we decided to get heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel for an additional $750.
With the inclusion of a $995 destination fee, the ticket price for our 2019 Volvo XC60 comes to $58,495, a pretty penny for a fine-looking crossover. Before you balk at the price, look at other mid-size luxury SUVs like the Lincoln Nautilus, Audi Q5 and even a Tesla Model X.
First impressions are always important, and, so far for our 2019 Volvo XC60, they’ve been mostly positive. The team loves the exterior, with one editor remarking on how attractive the modern design of the XC60 is. But the inside is what the team seems to really love about the Scandinavian crossover. Our editors mentioned the rich materials included in the cabin, and the heated, cooled and massaged front seats that go a long way in setting the tone for a luxurious driving experience.
The next few months behind the wheel of the wheel of the XC60 should be a blast, with one thing for sure: The XC60 will get us there safe and in style.
