Do I Need to Visit the Dealership When Buying a Car?

Online shopping has been a thing for a long time, but the automotive industry didn’t really hit the gas on digital shopping until the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, dealerships of all sizes have begun offering at least some degree of an online buying experience, with many giving shoppers the ability to purchase a car and have it shipped to their homes without ever setting foot in a dealer’s showroom. Even so, it’s not always possible to buy a car online, and it’s not always the best idea even when the option is available. Here’s what you need to know about online car shopping and whether you will have to visit a physical dealership at any point during the process.

Can You Buy a Car Completely Online?

Yes, it’s often possible to buy a car completely online, even from smaller independent dealers. Many now offer streamlined interfaces with robust credit applications, vehicle valuation tools, and other systems that replace some or all of the in-person dealership experience. It’s important not to get carried away, however, because that convenience sometimes comes at a cost. For example, dealers are usually much more cautious when making offers on trade-in vehicles if they haven’t been able to inspect them first. You may also find it easier to negotiate pricing and other items, such as accessories, in person. Finally, we always recommend a thorough inspection and test drive before buying any vehicle, especially a used one.

You Might Have to Visit a Dealer at Some Point During the Buying Process

There are times when you can’t avoid a trip to the dealer, even if the online shopping experience is polished and convenient. Many states require in-person signatures on sales documents, and some dealers may want you to complete the paperwork at their dealership. You may also run into issues during the financing and credit application processes that are easier to resolve in person. Finally, some dealers don’t make offers on trade-in vehicles without physically inspecting them first. If they do make an offer without an inspection, it may be significantly lower than the amount offered after the used-car manager evaluates the vehicle.

When Buying a Car Online is the Right Decision

Everyone appreciates convenience and the opportunity to save time, but online car-buying isn’t the best choice for every buyer.

Buying a car online is a good choice for people who:

  • Have done their research and understand exactly what they want
  • Are comfortable with technology and with sharing personal information securely online
  • Want the highest level of convenience and don’t want to spend time driving to and from a dealership
  • Cannot find their desired vehicle locally

Online car buying is not the best choice for people who:

  • Have not test-driven or spent time in the vehicle they want to buy
  • Need to ask a lot of detailed questions
  • Want to buy a high-mileage or older used vehicle
  • Don’t have a firm idea of the vehicle they want

Will Online Car-Buying Replace Dealers?

No matter how smooth or convenient online car buying becomes, it is unlikely to replace physical car dealers anytime soon. Many people still prefer having the ability to browse vehicles in person and ask questions, even if it means taking time to visit a dealership. It’s also hard to replicate the test-drive experience through online shopping. We recommend test-driving a vehicle before buying it unless you are already thoroughly familiar with the model. Dealers also serve as the main point of contact between buyers and automakers and usually handle after-sales service and support.
