2019 Jeep Cherokee Overview -For those looking for a sporty and capable small SUV, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee has much to offer. Numerous trims, engine choices, and options mean there’s a Cherokee for just about every need. There’s also no equal to the Trailhawk trim’s off-road ability, not even the Toyota RAV4 Adventure. Conversely, crossovers like the Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, and Toyota RAV4 have better resale and reliability numbers, with the 2019 Jeep Cherokee average reliability scores. For 2019, the Jeep Cherokee offers three engine options: a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, a normally-aspirated 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, and a 3.2-liter V6. 4-wheel drive is available with all three engines, but regardless of choice, the only transmission is a somewhat dubious 9-speed automatic that has proven problematic for Jeep owners.

What is the best 2019 Jeep Cherokee trim? - The Latitude Plus with a few option packages makes the most sense for those not interested in hardcore off-roading. It offers two sound 4WD systems plus the option of more powerful engines was priced in the $30K range when new. However, if you’re thinking about hitting the trails, there is no substitute for the Cherokee Trailhawk.

How many mpg does the 2019 Jeep Cherokee get? - For the Latitude, Latitude Plus, and Limited with the 2.4-liter engine and front-wheel drive, expect fuel economy figures around 22-mpg city and 31-mpg highway. 4WD models earn 21-mpg city and 29-mpg highway. The 2.0-liter turbo engine achieves 23-city/31-hwy but varies when adding 4WD. The 2.0-liter with the Active Drive I gets 21-city/29-hwy. With Active Drive II, it gets 20-city/27-hwy, and with the Trailhawk’s Active Drive Lock, you’re looking at 20-city/26-hwy. Finally, the 3.2-liter V6 earns 20-city and 29-hwy with front-drive. 4-wheel drive figures are 19-city/27-hwy with Active Drive I, 18-city/26-hwy with Active Drive II, and 18-city/24-hwy with Active Drive Lock.

Which 2019 Jeep Cherokee offers the most safety? - Without any additional driver-assists, the 2019 Jeep Cherokee scores 4 out of 5-Stars in government crash tests and gets a Good rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which also rated it a Top Safety Pick. If you want more helpful driver aids, you’ll need to opt for the Limited with the Technology Group.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude - The least expensive Cherokee trim is the Latitude. It comes standard with a 180-horsepower 2.4-liter engine but offers the option of a 271-horsepower 3.2-liter V6. Front-wheel drive is standard, with Jeep’s Active Drive I part-time 4-wheel drive a $1,500 option. Active Drive I also includes the Selec-Terrain system with modes for Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud, and Auto. When equipped with the V6 and the Trailer Tow Package, the Cherokee can tow up to 4,500 pounds. Standard towing with the 2.4-liter engine is 2,000 pounds.
The Latitude may be the entry-level trim, but it comes with some surprising features, such as LED automatic headlights, LED fog lights, and active grille shutters that close to help improve aerodynamics at highway speeds. The Latitudes standard 17-inch steel wheels may not be glamorous but are less prone to damage versus lighter alloy wheels. Other exterior features worth mentioning include power mirrors, remote keyless entry, bright roof rails, and tinted solar glass. The Latitude’s comfort and convenience features include manual air conditioning, a tilt/telescoping steering, power windows, power door locks, manual 6-way driver and passenger seats, cloth upholstery, and a 60/40 split-folding rear seat. The instrument cluster features analog gauges and a 3.5-inch high-resolution driver information display. Jeep’s Uconnect 4 serves as the Latitude’s infotainment system, with a 7-inch color touch screen, AM/FM stereo, Bluetooth phone connectivity, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Music plays through six speakers, while a 12-volt outlet and one console USB port supply power. SiriusXM satellite radio is optional. Standard safety systems include full airbag coverage, trailer sway control, a rear backup camera, hill-start assist (keeps the vehicle from rolling backward when stopped on an incline), and electronic traction and stability control. Optional packages include the Cold Weather Group that adds heated front seats, windshield wiper de-icers, a heated steering wheel, an engine block heater, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The Popular Appearance Group adds deep-tinted rear privacy glass and 17-inch alloy wheels. The SafetyTec Group consists of a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and power multifunction foldaway mirrors. Key features of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude include:

Automatic LED headlights – Provide a brighter beam for better night vision.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – Allow smartphone integration with the car’s infotainment system, granting access to your phone’s music, maps, message, and more.

Tilt/telescoping steering wheel – Allows various size drivers to find the perfect driving position.

Available V6 engine – Provides better power for passing and merging, plus increases towing up to 4,500 pounds when properly equipped.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus - The Latitude Plus builds off the Latitude’s standard roster, and we think even with the extra few grand, it’s still the smart choice. In addition to the 3.2-liter V6 option is a 270-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that bumps the Cherokee’s max towing to 4,000 pounds. The Latitude Plus adds heated side mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, upgraded cloth and vinyl seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat with 4-way power lumbar support, and one-touch up/down front windows. Cruise control is also standard, as is a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. Jeep’s Keyless Enter’ n Go proximity key allows you to unlock the door and start the car with only the key fob in your purse or pocket. A push-button start is also standard, and the Uconnect infotainment system gains SiriusXM satellite radio. Optional equipment for the Latitude Plus includes a dual-pane panoramic power sunroof and the Active Drive II 4WD system with low range and neutral mode. Music lovers will want the 9-speaker 506-watt Alpine audio upgrade. The Comfort and Convenience Group adds a power liftgate, remote start, auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 115-volt outlet. Key features of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Latitude Plus include:

Keyless Enter’ n Go – With the key fob in your pocket, touching the door handle is all that’s required to unlock the doors, while the push of a button starts the car.

Dual-zone automatic climate control – Allows driver and passenger to create their own climate zones without the need for constant adjustment.

Heated side mirrors – Activated when switching on the rear defroster, this feature helps keep ice and snow from building up on the mirrors.

Heated side mirrors – Activated when switching on the rear defroster, this feature helps keep ice and snow from building up on the mirrors.

8-way power driver’s seat – Includes 4-way power lumbar support for improved comfort over the standard, manually adjustable seat

2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited - The Limited moves the Cherokee into the near-luxury realm, with more creature comforts than the Latitude Plus but offering the same engine and 4WD options. Moving to the Limited brings a power rear liftgate, integrated side-mirror turn signals, windshield wiper de-icers, time-delay auto-off headlights, and 18-inch alloy wheels. Interior upgrades include Nappa leather upholstery, a 7-inch driver information display, dual-zone automatic climate control, a heated steering wheel, as well as driver’s memory for the seat, mirrors, and radio presets. Also part of the Limited packaging is an 8-way power passenger seat with power lumbar support and an 8.4-inch color infotainment touch screen. The Limited gains additional driver-assists, including a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and remote start. Optional groups in addition to the Latitude Plus’s offerings include the Luxury Group that adds ventilated front seats, premium Nappa leather upholstery, a foot-activated power liftgate, and a fore and aft sliding rear seat. The Technology Group adds full-speed forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, rain-sensing wipers, and auto high-beam headlights. Also in the group are front and rear parking sensors and Jeep’s Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist that can automatically steer the Cherokee into a parking spot, with the driver operating the gas, brakes, and transmission lever. The High Altitude Package adds unique styling plus features such as navigation, the 9-speaker Alpine audio system, and 19-inch wheels. Key features of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Limited include:

Power liftgate – Automatically opens via a button on the gate or the remote fob.

Nappa leather upholstery – Adds a touch of elegance to the Cherokee interior and allows for an optional upgrade to ventilated seats.

Heated steering wheel – Keeps the steering wheel warm to the touch, negating the need for gloves after a long night parked in the cold.

Blind-spot monitor – Warns the driver of vehicles that may be riding in the Cherokee’s blind spots.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk - The Trailhawk is the Cherokee to get if you’re serious about going off-road. It comes standard with the 3.2-liter V6, with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine optional. The Trailhawk features a beefed-up Active Drive II 4WD system with a locking rear differential and an additional Rock mode for the Selec-Terrain. The Trailhawk’s Selec-Speed Control system acts like cruise control but in reverse, helping the Trailhawk creep slowly over rocks or down steep grades with no input from the driver. True to its Trail Rated badge, the Trailhawk comes equipped with a beefed-up off-road suspension adding another inch to the Cherokee’s ground clearance. It also includes skid plate protection, 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, and red tow hooks. Standard features for the Trailhawk include heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support, leather and cloth upholstery with red accent stitching, Uconnect 4 with an 8.4-inch touch screen, and a matt black hood decal. Standard driver-assist systems include a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Options for the Trailhawk mirror the Latitude Plus and include the Cold Weather Group, Comfort and Convenience Group, and Trailer Tow Group. The Trailhawk Elite package takes luxury to the next level, adding heated and ventilated front seats, a power passenger seat, a foot-activated power tailgate, a heated steering wheel, and windshield wiper de-icers. Options for the Trailhawk Elite include the Technology Group (see Limited trim optional equipment) and the Trailer Tow Group. Standalone options for the Elite include a panoramic sunroof, a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, and the Uconnect 4C navigation system. Key features of the 2019 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk include:

3.2-liter V6 – Has the muscle and torque to get through the most challenging off-road course, plus helps the Trailhawk attain a 4,500-pound tow rating.

Active Drive II with Rock mode – The Trailhawk’s advanced 4-wheel-drive system includes the ability to creep down steep trails, crawl over boulder-strewn passes, and plow through deep snow.

Skid-plate protection – Protective steel plates cover the transfer case, fuel tanks, front suspension, and underbody.

Available ventilated front seats – A great way to stay cool and dry after a day parked in the hot sun.

2019 Jeep Cherokee Overland - Like the Limited, the Overland seeks a place in the luxury limelight. It too comes standard with front-wheel drive and offers the option of Jeep Active Drive II when ordered with the 2.0-liter engine. The Overland’s standard engine is the 3.2-liter V6. Building off the Limited’s equipment, the Overland adds the contents of the Limited Luxury Group, plus a heated rear seat, Uconnect 4C navigation infotainment system, 9-speaker Alpine audio, a leather-wrapped dash and steering wheel with Zebrano wood accents, and Berber carpet floor mats. The Overland’s exterior gains chrome front tow hooks, 19-inch alloy wheels, plus body-colored wheel flares, shark-fin antenna, fascias, and door sills.
