<h4>Five Thoughts About the 2023 Mini Cooper S Clubman ALL4</h4>

I spent a week with the 2023 Mini Cooper S Clubman ALL4, using it as my daily driver in and around southeastern Michigan. This press car carried a base price of $36,500. It wore Sage Green metallic paint with a black leather interior. It included the Iconic trim ($4,900), the Untold Edition package ($2,250), and a $100 credit for deleting the heated steering wheel. Add an $850 destination charge, and the Clubman had an as-tested price of $44,400.

<h4>Thought 1: It’s Cute</h4>

I’m a fan of cute, but not usually in cars. But I must admit, the Clubman is simply adorable. It has the proportions of a classic Mini wagon and manages to look small without being tiny like the Mini Cooper Hardtop. The Clubman has the big eyes and darling face of a baby deer. I defy you to hold back a smile when looking at it. You can’t do it.

<h4>Thought 2: It Handles Like a Go-Kart</h4>

I had low expectations about what it would be like to drive the Clubman. The 2-door hardtop can be a blast in the proper trim, thanks partly to its short (98.2-inch) wheelbase. The 4-door Clubman has a 105.1-inch wheelbase but still feels very nimble. My test car had all-wheel drive (AWD), which Mini calls “ALL4.” (The base model is front-wheel drive.) The Mini Excitement Package and Mini Driving Modes allow you to tailor your car’s performance to your driving style, roads, and conditions. I enjoyed throwing this car into the curves, zooming along the back roads, and feeling like a racer.

<h4>Thought 3: It’s Quick, But Not Fast</h4>

The Clubman ALL4 weighs 3,535 pounds and uses a twin-turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder direct-injection engine with 189 horsepower and 206 lb-ft of torque on tap. Mini claims a 0-60 time of 6.9 seconds. The low seat height makes it feel faster, but the clock tells no lies. A 301-hp John Cooper Works version of the Clubman gets to 60 in 4.6 seconds, which would be fun — but it starts at $40,700. I’d stick to the back roads, enjoy the handling, and let the muscle cars compete for straight-line supremacy.

<h4>Thought 4: It Feels Like a Premium Car</h4>

Say what you will about the classic Mini Cooper vehicles — they were cheap economy cars in their day. Build quality was spotty and British, i.e., not very good. The Mini Cooper Clubman has a premium feel from top to bottom. From the detailed exterior design to the cohesive interior, this is a car with class, style, and personality. It’s easy to love the rows of aircraft-inspired toggle switches, the big round gauge cluster and central infotainment screen, and the well-crafted trim.

<h4>Thought 5: It’s Got Quirks</h4>

I found the infotainment system frustrating and inconsistent. I use a lot of these systems, and this one made me mad with its unpredictable operation. The cabin was noisy on all road surfaces, mainly due to the low-profile rubber on the Clubman’s 18-inch alloy wheels. I had to use a search engine to figure out how to open the hood (bonnet), which releases upon two pulls of the lever, not one — BMW-style. Annoying.

<h4>The Wrap: I Like It</h4>

I will look at the Clubman differently when I see one on the road. I don’t see many here in Michigan, but I’ll nod with respect when an intrepid Clubman owner drives by. It would be easy to fall in love with this little wagon, and I wouldn’t try to talk anyone out of it.
