<h4>Driving the Nissan Ariya for 6 Months: Our Experience</h4>

<p>The Nissan Ariya is the brand’s latest electric and offers an entirely different EV driving experience than its smaller and more economical sibling, the Leaf. While the compact 2024 Nissan Leaf offers consumers a lower price ($29,280 including the $1,140 destination fee) and get-around-town zippiness, the Ariya ($43,190 plus $1,365 destination fee) provides a comfortable refuge for those longer sojourns given its roomier SUV architecture. Our time behind the wheel has given us a more in-depth experience with the vehicle.</p>

<h4>First Things First: Our Ariya</h4>
We’ve been driving the 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+ ($53,690 plus $1,365 destination fee) packed with comfort and convenience features like a head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a portable charge cable (120-volt/240-volt), Nissan’s Intelligent Around View Monitor, power liftgate, heated front and rear seats and steering wheel, and exterior features like 19-inch alloy wheels. The panoramic moonroof lets you see the sunshine or stars. As for safety features, our Ariya Empower+ comes equipped with Nissan Safety Shield 360, blind-spot and lane departure warnings, rear automatic braking, rain-sensing wipers, heated outside mirrors, high-beam assist, plus Nissan’s ProPilot Assist 2.0, including Intelligent Cruise Control, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

<h4>What’s the Range?</h4>

The 2023 Nissan Ariya can travel with an estimated EPA range between 205 to 304 miles, depending on the model. We are pleased with the range of up to 289 miles in the Empower+ version. A frigid 110-mile round-trip to Athens, Georgia, barely chiseled down the range below 100 miles.

<h4>Our Take: Driving Impressions</h4>

The car quickly blends with daily car-driving activities, from high school pickups to errands. So far, our Nissan Ariya has driven a dutiful 813 miles around the metro Atlanta area, including that holiday road trip. We can’t wait to take it farther afield to see how it performs.

<h4>What We Like So Far</h4>

<ul>
    <li>The suite of safety features helps keep driving life safe. </li>
    <li>Minimalist interior and a streamlined, elegant display.</li>
    <li>I tested out the ProPilot Assist 2.0. This tech lets you drive using adaptive cruise when it’s green or hands-free when the lighting signals blue. It eases between the systems, and as long as you can take the wheel at a moment’s notice, it’s a fantastic system to drive with when optimal conditions (no rain) exist during a road trip.</li>
    <li>Because parking in public spaces has its hazards, one of my favorite convenience features is also a safety feature: Nissan’s door-locking system. When you approach or walk away from the vehicle with the key in your purse, doors automatically unlock or lock.</li>
    <li>You can ask the car to handle all those hands-free tasks by asking the Ariya, “Hello Nissan,” to do things for you, like finding the nearest DC fast charging station. Speaking of charging, you receive one year of free EVGo charging with your lease or purchase of a Nissan Ariya.</li>
    <li>Driving with a head-up display makes everything that much easier. </li>
</ul>

<h4>Things That Can Improve</h4>
<ul>
    <li>Turn signal activation is clunky. Signals tend to stay on if you don’t make a hard turn right or left.</li>
    <li>The e-step mode was difficult to stomach for those with motion sickness. Perhaps adjustments can be made, but it’s a hard pass.</li>
    <li>The Intelligent Key fob, if depressed too long (three seconds), can activate and crack open the Nissan Ariya’s windows. That happened to fellow Autotrader Advice editor Chris Hardesty. This is a great feature, but not when the key fob is stuffed in your pocket, and you inadvertently hit it when it’s pouring buckets of rain outside.</li>

<h4>Trunk and Storage Space Fit for a Family</h4>

Our long-term 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+ comes with surprises inside. With ample hidden storage space and plenty of room for suitcases and groceries, the Ariya makes a great family vehicle. A spacious trunk offers room for about four large suitcases or three extra large suitcases and a carry-on. Here’s what else I discovered about the Nissan Ariya: 
<ul>
<li>I’m a big fan of the Divide-N-Hide Cargo System, which makes shopping easier.</li> 
<li>In the trunk, flooring sections lift to reveal pockets of space to keep groceries and other packages in place. If you need to hide a laptop, it’s a great hidden storage area. This same system can be used for suitcases — you can remove them and get more height.</li> 
<li>The vehicle’s spacious trunk would fit most needs, including families’. The Ariya offers 22.8 cubic feet of space in the trunk. With the back seats down, it expands to 59.7 cubic feet.</li> <li>Another cool feature is the hidden center dashboard storage. It fits things like a small laptop, wallet, sunglasses, notebook, and other small items. It also works like a table for your laptop or for holding your cell phone.</li> 
<li>A haptic button near the gear shift opens and closes the storage. Side storage pockets in the trunk secure small grocery items you need to place in a standing-up position. </li> 
<li>It’s also handy if you want to keep some window cleaner or a tub of cleaning wipes in the trunk. You’ll find six luggage hooks in the trunk, which you can use to secure cargo and other items.</li> 
<li>PRO TIP: Don’t forget that carrying extra heavy luggage can lower your driving range. The 2023 Nissan Ariya can travel with an estimated EPA range between 205 to 304 miles, depending on the model. The Empower+ model has an EPA range of up to 289 miles.</li>

<h4>Driver Monitor Location, Sliding Armrest, and Car Seats</h4>

Too often, cars scream at me to keep my eyes on the road, but the 2023 Nissan Ariya Empower+ kept quiet during my week with it. Was I more attentive than usual? Not necessarily. Instead, my warning-free driving was primarily due to the location of the Ariya’s driver monitor camera.

The fine engineers at Nissan mounted the driver monitor on top of the Ariya’s steering column. So what, you ask? Many carmakers put their monitor cameras along the top edge of the instrument cluster, say, above the speedometer. That location is logical. However, adjusting the steering wheel to where it’s most comfortable for me tends to block my eyes from the monitors’ line of sight in some vehicles.

Not so in the Ariya. It always recognized my head position and eye direction so I could use ProPilot Assist 2.0 functions without limiting steering assistance or displaying any “Can’t see face clearly” notifications. It’s worth mentioning that the attention monitor is active in all modes, not just when using ProPilot Assist. Drivers can turn off the camera in the car’s settings, but we don’t recommend deactivating any safety features. Besides, the monitor turns back on the next time the car starts.

<h4>Moveable Armrest</h4>

Another uncommon feature in the Ariya is a power-sliding center armrest that holds the shift lever and park button. A switch lets the driver move the armrest and console forward or aft. The adjustment is separate from the driver seat position, helping make the cockpit more ergonomic and comfortable. This small convenience might get little use from many owners. Still, it might be a welcome amenity in households with multiple drivers adjusting the seat — especially when there’s a significant height difference between them.

<h4>Car Seat Installation</h4>

Drivers who shuttle children around should be interested in knowing that opening the Ariya’s rear doors provides ample space for installing and removing bulky car seats. It’s relatively easy for me to lean into this crossover SUV and reach over to attach and unfasten a car seat’s lower anchors. Plus, there is enough legroom in the back to climb inside to secure the tether anchors behind the seat. And while the rear cargo area is big enough for a folded full-size stroller, it’s not too deep to prevent many parents from stretching to reach the tether latches when standing outside with the liftgate open.

<h4>ProPilot Assist 2.0</h4>

When using the Nissan Ariya’s ProPilot Assist 2.0, this tech interfaces with adaptive cruise control and lets you go hands-free on certain mapped roadways. If you get nervous about driving hands-free, don’t worry. You can still keep your hands on the wheel. I tested the ProPilot Assist 2.0 system around metro Atlanta each time I took the interstate, whether to a local mall, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and Athens, Georgia, to visit family and friends or to drop off the vehicle to a colleague. What I like about the system is that it only allows the vehicle to switch over to hands-free when driving on one of the compatible roadways or during optimal road conditions. Compatible roadways include interstates and other major highways. Optimal road conditions include when there’s no traffic and when it’s not raining, sleeting, snowing, or construction.

The system gives signals each time it engages. A band of light around the dashboard lights up green when the ProPilot 2.0 system engages with adaptive cruise control and then blue if the roadway and conditions allow hands-free driving. It was easy to use, providing a smooth transition each time. I never felt unsafe. The vehicle always gave alerts when the car disengaged the system. The blue lights would go back to green or turn off entirely, like when it started pouring once. Once you become familiar with the system, you may even decide to take your hands off the wheel, as I did several times. Just remember to be ready to take the wheel at a moment’s notice. Construction zones pop up quickly, and traffic can, too.

<h4>Wrap Up</h4>

After six months of driving the 2023 Nissan Ariya, the team’s feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Unfortunately, it’s time to relinquish the keys to this awesome EV as it makes its way back to the manufacturer. Before we do, let’s sum up the highs and lows of our time behind the wheel of the Ariya.

<h4>What We Liked</h4>

There’s been lots to like about the Ariya in our time behind the wheel. The team loved the host of safety features and the ease of use of the ProPilot 2.0. Lead Advice Editor Renee Valdes advocated the system, stating, “It was easy to feel safe and understand when it was on and off in the vehicle.”  Other systems, such as voice recognition and heads-up display, were team favorites on the tech-heavy EV.

The team also appreciated Ariya’s family friendliness, from its spacious cargo area to the ease of car seat installation. Senior Editor Chris Hardesty appreciated the dimensions of the Ariya, saying, “The crossover SUV’s compact size is helpful in tight parking lots, and its right-size height makes it easy enough for smaller kids to climb inside.” Hardesty reflected on his spouse’s reaction to the style and accouterments of the EV, with his partner remarking, “Wow, this is a Nissan?”. Indeed, it is.

<h4>What We Didn’t</h4>

The things the team didn’t like about the Ariya were in short supply but still worth noting. We didn’t like the functionality of the turn signal, as they tended to stay on even after changing lanes. Also, a few team members didn’t like the e-step mode to control acceleration and deceleration, but luckily, this feature can be turned off for those who are not fans of one-pedal driving. Finally, some team members found the intelligent key fob a bit too sensitive and experienced some unintentional triggering of functionality while carrying it in their pockets.

<h4>The Takeaway</h4>

No vehicles are perfect, but the Nissan Ariya left our team of seasoned automotive experts impressed by its style, features, and capability. Would we buy one? Likely. Should you?
