<h4>5 Thoughts About the 2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R</h4>

America’s favorite car, the Ford F-150, gets a midcycle refresh for the 2024 model year. In addition to an aesthetic update, it drops the old naturally aspirated V6 engine, adds a Pro Access Tailgate that makes the bed more accessible when a trailer is hooked up, and picks up various tech upgrades to keep it fresh. I got to drive a couple of examples of the refreshed Ford F-150. I spent a lot of time with the apex predator in the lineup: the Raptor R. Along with an exterior makeover of its own, the Raptor R pumps out an extra 20 horsepower this year. The V6-powered Raptor starts at $80,435, but the Raptor R begins at $112,360 (including $1,995 in destination charges). After putting this beast through its paces — mostly off-road — here are my takeaways.

<h4>1. It Does the Raptor Thing Well</h4>

This model is a facelift of the third generation of the Ford F-150 Raptor, so we all know the Raptor MO by now. It’s remarkably good at going very fast off-road (and looking the part). It does things that most trucks can’t do, at least not from the factory. From going 80 mph on a wide desert trail with surprising aplomb to whipping around an off-road autocross course to absorbing bumps at high speeds that would hobble lesser trucks, the Raptor R handles anything you throw at it, and it looks and sounds mean doing it.

<h4>2. The ‘Carnivore’ V8 Is Appropriately Named</h4>

Power for the Ford F-150 Raptor R comes from the “Carnivore” 5.2-liter supercharged V8. Ford has been on a roll with cool engine names for a long time, and “Carnivore” is one of my favorites. Based on the “Predator” that powers the Mustang Shelby GT500, it uses a different supercharger pulley and engine calibration for greater low-end torque. The output is 720 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque. If you’re keeping score, the Hellcat-powered Ram 1500 TRX makes 702 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque.

At a certain point, all 700-plus-horsepower supercharged V8s kind of feel the same, but piloting them never gets old. Stomp the throttle and prepare to be thrown back in your seat. The cool thing about the Raptor R is that you can do that with almost any terrain under your tires, and the truck just makes it work — quickly.

<h4>3. Surprisingly Domesticated</h4>

No one would call this 720-hp truck “subtle,” but I might call it “tame” when driving on a highway with cruise control set. It has the audible rumble of a V8, but when it’s in the standard drive mode, and you’re not trying to show off, it kind of drives like a regular Ford F-150. I mean that as a complement. The mighty Raptor R is still a pickup you can use as a daily driver, and that’s a great thing.

<h4>4. No BlueCruise?</h4>

BlueCruise is Ford’s hands-free semi-autonomous driving system, and I love it. Although the Raptor is generously equipped with Co-Pilot360 safety tech, you can’t get BlueCruise on the ferocious off-roader. Yes, BlueCruise has no benefit off-road, but most Raptor owners do much of their driving on paved, public roads. Perhaps it’s not there because of hardware limitations unique to the Raptor, but I wish it were at least optional, especially at this price point.

<h4>5. It’s in its Element</h4>

If you go off the Ford reservation, it’s possible to get a more road and/or track-oriented version of the F-150 with a supercharged V8, like the Shelby F-150 Super Snake and the Hennessey VelociRaptoR 1000. Those are pretty sweet, but Ford is going the correct route by only using the supercharged V8 in an off-road version of the F-150. No, it’s not sensible or practical, but it makes more sense as an off-roader than a track car. I also think it works better aesthetically. How do you make a 700-plus-horsepower Ford truck tasteful? The Raptor R, that’s how.

Last year, I had a bright orange 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R as a press loaner for a week. The first time my oldest daughter (age 9 at the time) tried to climb into the passenger seat, she kept laughing because of how hard it was to climb into due to its comical height. The harder she laughed, the more she struggled to get in the truck. I didn’t have a rope ladder I could throw out of the cab, so I had to get out and help her in.

I tell you this story to explain why the F-150 Raptor R, as awesome as it is, is a truck I don’t particularly want to own, even if money were no object. However, it’s not hard to see the appeal of this truck, and it’s gotten better for 2024. If you don’t have short people who need to climb inside and you’re not concerned about what a pain it is to park, this is just a big, fast, loud truck that you can drive almost anywhere.

Its off-road capabilities are amazing, but what I really like about the Raptor R is that it’s a high-performance daily driver. Many performance cars, like Ford’s own Mustang, are purchased as second cars that spend most of their time in a garage while you do your daily commuting in something else, like an F-150, perhaps. With the Ford F-150 Raptor R, you can have a wild performance car and a daily driver in one beautiful beast, plus you can enjoy it on the trails or the off-road park on weekends. Just make sure you have a big budget for fuel and tires.
