In 2023, Hyundai introduced the Ioniq 6 and immediately filled its trunk with awards. A jury of more than 100 automotive journalists from 30 countries named it World Car of the Year, World Electric Vehicle of the Year, and World Car Design of the Year. It was all-new for 2023 and is still new enough that Hyundai saw fit to change almost nothing for 2024. This is, to put it bluntly, an unusual-looking car. That’s what defenders love about it. After a week of testing it, I count myself among them. The Ioniq 6 is functionally just an easy-to-live-with family sedan. But it doesn’t look like one. It looks funky. It’s as easy to drive day-to-day as any Toyota Camry. But its electric nature means you can bypass the gas pump, and its funky shape means your car feels special in a way no Camry does. My tester model was an all-wheel-drive Ioniq 6 Limited in a matte gray that Hyundai calls Gravity Gold Matte. It had an all-in price of $55,975 after delivery.

<h4>1. Not Many Sedans Look This Unique</h4>

Describing the Ioniq 6, I found myself hunting for words that are only arguably real words, like “swoopy.” Hyundai resurrected the pre-World War II term “streamliner” to describe it. It’s weird. A sort of elongated bubble, it’s at once rounded and stretched, like a Porsche incorrectly rendered in marshmallow. It works. Hyundai is doing something unique with its electric car designs. While most automakers try to give all their cars a family resemblance, Hyundai is letting designers create electric vehicles (EVs) that look nothing like other Hyundai EVs. This car uses many of the same parts as Hyundai’s fun, boxy Ioniq 5 SUV. But, apart from a pixelated light theme, they don’t look alike. That gives it charisma. You can buy a lot of look-alike cars. Or you can buy this.

<h4>2. There’s a Subtle 1980s Homage Here That Just Works</h4>

For all its rounded, swoopy lines, the Ioniq 6 has a boxy pixelated light theme that calls to mind Minecraft or, if you’re older, classic 1980s Atari interfaces. The Pixels are everywhere. They’re in the headlights. In the taillights. Stitched into the convincing faux leather seats. On the steering wheel (lit up blue for forward and red for reverse). Even in the lights that indicate whether your phone is charging in the wireless charging tray. In an EV with all the technology of 2024, it’s a playful throwback touch.

<h4>3. I Wish This Weird Interior Were a Little Weirder</h4>


I know I’m talking a lot about design here. But design is what this car does best. Hyundai clearly told its designers to go nuts. But I wish they’d been a touch more creative. Electric cars lack transmissions, so they lack the hump that runs down the center of most cars and divides the driver’s side from the passenger’s side. In this car’s cousin, the Ioniq 5, Hyundai simply left that space open. It lends that car’s cabin an airy, spacious feel. Here, they created an odd false transmission tunnel with open space beneath. It’s probably a convenient spot to tuck a purse or shopping bag. But it also feels like they missed a chance to make this cabin feel bigger by leaving it out. The divider mostly takes up space in a car cabin, where you tend to want more space.

<h4>4. Drive Modes Mean Something in This Car</h4>

Many cars have several driving modes, but switching between them often reveals little difference in performance. The Ioniq 6 has four – Eco, Normal, Sport, and Snow – and each feels like an entirely different car. The car’s handling stays predictable – pleasant, but not remarkable – in all four. But the accelerator pedal changes completely. In day-to-day driving, Eco is pleasant and sedate. It works for your commute or errands, and it conserves range. Normal proves that, in Eco, the car is holding itself back. Electric cars offer more effortless power than gas cars do. Electric motors don’t need to spool up like gasoline engines do – they have 100% of their torque on tap at all times – which can make them lightning quick. Normal mode isn’t quite sports car-like, but it’s 80% of the way there. Sport feels wildly different. It wants to leap out from under you. Switching from Eco to Sport, you feel like someone spooked your horse. Most owners would probably use it rarely. But having a button that makes your car suddenly much quicker is fun. I didn’t have the weather to test Snow in my time with the car. Not many cars give you that varied an experience.

<h4>5. Beep. Beep Beep. Beepbeep. Beep … Beep</h4>

One sour note: The 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 beeps when the speed limit increases. It beeps when the speed limit decreases. It beeps when you exceed the speed limit. It beeps when you enter a school zone. It beeps when you enter a work zone. It beeps when the car ahead of you at a stoplight starts to pull away. It beeps when you leave your lane without signaling (I was avoiding a stray soccer ball). It. Beeps. A. Lot. The beeps aren’t particularly annoying. They sound like Hyundai’s audio engineers researched how to create the most unobtrusive possible beep. Warnings are good things. But I’m not sure this many warnings are useful. A quick Google search finds a few owners sharing information on how to disconnect wires to deactivate the beeps. Perhaps Hyundai could consider a beep or two less per drive. A car can give you so much information that you tune it all out.

The car does have one warning system I love, though. When you signal a turn, the driver’s instrument panel shows a camera view of your blind spot.

<h4>The Wrap</h4>

What a delightful car. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Hyundai Ioniq 6. At heart, it’s a pleasant midsize family car. But it has style most pleasant midsize family cars don’t. Because Hyundai lets its designers have some fun, it’s practical but also unique. That drive mode button lets you change your mind about what kind of car you want to drive today mid-trip. As an EV, the Ioniq 6 is only practical where charging is easy. But its long range and quick recharges make it easy to live with.
