<h4>5 Thoughts About the 2024 vs. 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe</h4>

<p>You might be surprised to hear that a vehicle making one of the biggest splashes this year is the all-new 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe. And then you see it and understand what everyone’s talking about. It’s bold. It’s boxy. Like, seriously bold and boxy. You might see one on the road and think it’s a Land Rover. There are worse comparisons. Here are 5 thoughts not just on the all-new, can’t-miss 2024 Santa Fe but also on how it compares to the outgoing, easy-to-miss <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/2023/hyundai/santa-f" target="_blank">2023 Santa Fe</a>. Let’s do this.</p>

<h4>1. Bold exterior pays off within.</h4> If you’re a fan of boxy vehicles, you know we’re living in a pretty good time. Back in the late aughts, cars like the Toyota Land Cruiser, Scion xB, Nissan Cube (yeah, remember that?), Honda Element, and Ford Flex had a bit of a moment. That’s because, in a world of curvy cars, they were blocks on wheels. And as any fan of moving trucks or the Chevy Astro knows, an angular exterior means a ton of room within. The same is true with the all-new 2024 Santa Fe. Compared to the old, curvy model that is bidding adieu, the new 2024 Santa Fe has a way roomier interior. In this respect, it joins the new guard of boxy vehicles like the Ford Bronco, Land Rover Defender, and, oh, yeah, the Toyota Land Cruiser.<p></p>

<h4>2. Gear selector switches it up.</h4> There were plenty of things I liked a lot about the old 2023 Santa Fe. But one thing I never really grew fond of regarding the now-previous generation was its button-based transmission. I never liked having to press D for drive, R for reverse, and the like. Parallel parking in the thing was a pain. The new Santa Fe also features a unique transmission selector, but this one is more intuitive, as well as better designed. The 2024 Santa Fe gear selector is a stalk extending from the steering wheel you twist to use, just like in the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Twist up for drive. Twist back for reverse. Press the big P at the end for Park. It might look a little unusual at first, but it works well. And, like the button-based system of the previous Santa Fe, this takes up little space to create a wide and open cabin.

<h4>3. You can sleep in it.</h4> Hey, are you a doomsday prepper or the type of car shopper who has a Plan D for if they ever become homeless or simply need a vehicle they can sleep in? My friends, turn your eyes to the all-new 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe. Its designers destined it for just such a thing. OK, maybe not the doomsday scenario, but seriously, they made it for car camping if that’s your thing. This ability is thanks to fold-flat second- and third-row rear seats. Now, I know lots of automakers claim their SUVs have “fold-flat” seats, but for real, these ones fold flat. You know what that means: Grab the air mattress and get those Zzzs. The old Santa Fe had folding rear seats and good cargo space, but nothing like this.

<h4>4. It offers a built-in sanitizer.</h4>

Hey, remember four years ago when doomsday prepping might have been more top of mind because of the global pandemic? Well, it just so happens that the 2024 Santa Fe was being designed during that time. In fact, the designers were doing it remotely, just like the way so many of us were working. You think discussing spreadsheets over Zoom is hard? Try making a car! Anyway, you might remember that sanitization, both of the liquid and UV types, was something we thought about way more than we normally would. The new Santa Fe can be had with a UV-C sanitizing compartment in the dash. Designers initially figured it could be used for face masks, but today, it works just as well for baby toys or your grody phone case, with who knows how many germs are on it. Again, you won’t find one of those in the old Santa Fe.

<h4>5. There’s a hybrid (but no plug-in for us).</h4>

As with the prior Santa Fe, the new 2024 Santa Fe can be had with a gasoline engine (a turbo-4 that works really well) or as a gas-electric hybrid. However, a third option previously available is missing: a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) like the one I had been driving for months. While other parts of the world can get a new Santa Fe PHEV, Hyundai says it’s not in the cards for us here in America. They didn’t give a specific reason, but my guess is take rate and cost. Perhaps Hyundai didn’t sell enough of them to justify production for the U.S., and the prior PHEV model was costlier, starting at over $43,000 once you factor in shipping. Score one for the old 2023 Santa Fe in this respect. That said, Hyundai reps say if buyers want a nice 2-row plug-in hybrid Hyundai SUV, they have a lovely Tucson available.

<h4>The Takeaway</h4> After spending considerable time in both the new and the outgoing Santa Fe, I can genuinely say I appreciate them both. The prior Santa Fe had a lot going for it and was among the small cast of 2-row midsize SUVs. If you still want one, I’m sure there are some new versions left on dealer lots. But the new 2024 Santa Fe is better in almost every way. It has a third row as standard, and that last row can easily fold flat when not in use. The new interior is simply bigger, more advanced, and richer in tech and features. And then there are those exterior looks. I get that not everyone is fond of the rear end and the low-mounted taillights, but its function, along with form, allows for a massive tailgate and wide, wide cargo area. Which you’ll appreciate every time you open it to load groceries or get some sleep.
