In the rogues’ gallery of electric vehicle (EV) startups attempting to duplicate Tesla’s success, Lucid is the only one that has beaten the flagship Model S at its own game. The Lucid Air Sapphire is even more powerful and has an even quicker 0-60 mph time than the once untouchable Tesla Model S Plaid. Yes, the Plaid is a much more affordable car than the Sapphire, but a win is a win in the age-old horsepower wars. I recently had the pleasure of driving the whole Lucid Air lineup, including the Sapphire, on some excellent roads in Northern California. Here are some takeaways from my experience with the fastest car I’ve ever driven.

<h4>1. This car is fast.</h4>

I’ll let you use your imagination regarding how fast I drove this car, but I will tell you that I broke my land speed record driving the Lucid Air Sapphire. Moving from a standstill to 60 mph in less than two seconds is a thrill that’s hard to describe. When I returned to my senses, I noticed how controlled the car felt under such an extreme rate of acceleration. “Easy to drive” isn’t how I’d characterize it, but it also never felt unwieldy. This car isn’t just a one-trick pony that only goes fast in a straight line. Lucid made sure to engineer a proper sport sedan around its stunningly powerful electric motors. The brakes, suspension, and even tires are all just right for this car, and it’s just as happy going fast around corners as it is on a runway.

<h4>2. Sapphire has only one spec.</h4>

Every Lucid Air Sapphire is identical. The only paint option is Sapphire Blue Metallic, the only interior option is Sapphire Stealth, there’s only one wheel option, and every Sapphire is equipped with features that are optional on lower trims, like the Surreal Sound Pro audio system and the DreamDrive Pro driver assist system. I kind of like that Lucid is telling you how it wants the Sapphire optioned and not leaving any room for dissent. If you want customizability, you must settle for just 819 hp in the Grand Touring trim.

<h4>3. Is it too aesthetically subtle?</h4>

Maybe you’re into the sleeper ethos of a car having more exciting performance than its subtle aesthetics imply. That’s cool in something like a V8-powered Buick Roadmaster, but the Sapphire might take the sleeper notion too far. While I like how the Lucid Air looks, I think most luxury car shoppers who pay a quarter-mil for one of the fastest cars in the world want a little more visual flair than this. There’s just not enough aesthetically separating the mighty Sapphire from the more modest trims of the Air with considerably lower price tags. That spoiler is cool, though.

<h4>4. There are no fake engine noises.</h4>

I am already tired of gimmicky sounds from the audio systems in sporty EVs. I don’t think the wooshing spaceship noises from some luxury EVs that will remain nameless are cute. They’re just silly. Lucid doesn’t play those games. It doesn’t have to artificially titillate your senses to trick you into having a visceral response to the car’s performance. The performance of the Air speaks for itself (especially the Sapphire), and it’s cool that the only mechanical sounds come from the electric powertrain stealthily doing its work.

<h4>5. It has one of my favorite infotainment systems.</h4>

The multi-screened infotainment system of the Lucid Air has a surprisingly short learning curve. The Sapphire has some unique graphics, but other than that, the infotainment tech is pretty much the same in every Air. The screen on the dash is big enough to be clear and informative but not so big that it’s intimidating. Likewise, the tablet-like screen that slides down in the center stack is very intuitive. Typing a destination into the nav system on this secondary screen was more ergonomically natural than tapping at a dash-mounted screen. I love that the swipe of a finger makes that screen disappear into the dash for a more simplistic driving experience and comes right back with another finger swipe. Overall, it is an outstanding first effort from Lucid on the user experience.

<h4>The Wrap</h4>

Few of us enjoy the luxury of shopping in the Lucid Air Sapphire’s price range. However, if you’re one of these few, it’s a sedan that excels in performance, luxury, technology, and even daily practicality thanks to its roomy interior, EPA-estimated 427-mile range, and quick charge times. It’s arguably the best daily driver $250K can buy.
