<h4>5 Thoughts About the 2024 Mazda CX-90 and CX-90 PHEV</h4>

Mazda’s latest addition to the lineup, the 2024 CX-90, is a 3-row SUV. Available as a traditional gasoline-only model and as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the CX-90 is the largest passenger car Mazda has built, an inch or so longer than the CX-9 it replaces in the lineup.
<p></p>
The CX-90 comes in 11 trim levels. Five are 3.3 Turbo models: Select (starting at $39,595), Preferred ($43,445), Preferred Plus ($45,900), Premium ($48,900), and Premium Plus ($52,950). Three are PHEV models: Preferred ($49,945), Premium ($54,400), and Premium Plus ($57,450). Three are 3.3 Turbo S models: Turbo S ($51,750), Premium ($56,450), and Premium Plus ($59,950). I spent a week in a CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus with an as-tested price of $59,920 (including a $595 premium paint option and a $1,375 delivery fee), followed by a week in a CX-90 Turbo S Premium Plus with an as-tested price of $61,920 (including a $595 premium paint charge and $1,375 delivery fee). I had some thoughts. Here are five of them.

<h4>1. The CX-90 is the fanciest Mazda ever.</h4>

I’ve owned a few Mazda vehicles over the past decade: A Mazda3 hatchback, a CX-5 compact SUV, and a CX-30 subcompact SUV, my wife’s current ride. Each one was nicer than the next, edging toward luxury. The CX-90 may have tipped over that boundary. The large SUV is statuesque and beautifully finished. The interior has the straightforward elegance I expect on a German luxury car. Unlike some vehicles that seem to be stretching for the goal line, the CX-90 has the quality and design to walk into the end zone.

<h4>2. The PHEV is in the middle of the lineup.</h4>

I’m used to finding the plug-in hybrid version of a car at the top of the pricing pyramid in a lineup, but Mazda has reserved that spot for the 340-horsepower Turbo S models. Though they share the Premium and Premium Plus designations, the Turbo S models get a few standard features the PHEV models don’t, pushing the luxury and convenience envelope.

<h4>3. The new inline-6 engine is a smooth operator.</h4>

Mazda has relied on the inline-4 and V6 engines for decades, ever since discontinuing the rotary engine that powered the RX-8 sports car. The CX-90 PHEV uses a 2.5-liter inline-4 with a 173-hp electric motor, but the gas versions use a new 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-6 – a Mazda first. Guess who else uses a turbocharged inline-6? BMW — a premium brand Mazda would love to be compared to. That can’t be an accident.

<h4>4. The big SUV platform shows its size in the corners.</h4>

If there’s one disappointment in the CX-90, it’s that the handling is just OK. I’ve come to expect superior handling in Mazda vehicles – that’s what keeps me buying. It’s not that the CX-90 handles poorly; it doesn’t. I noticed a little more body roll than I wanted and a sense that the CX-90’s momentum was not entirely in control. I’d still put it above most of the competition in its class, like the Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, and GMC Acadia, but it didn’t have me whispering “Zoom-Zoom.”

<h4>5. I would probably pick the PHEV.</h4>

Even though the gasoline versions are mild hybrids, with an electric boost available to goose acceleration and improve some other functions, I appreciate the flexibility of a PHEV powertrain. The <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/plug-in-hybrid/2024/mazda/cx-90" target="_blank">2024 CX-90 PHEV</a> has a 26-mile electric-only range and a 56-MPGe rating. I didn’t notice any performance penalty when driving the PHEV versus the Turbo S, though I drove them in back-to-back weeks and not side-to-side. I like the convenience of the PHEV’s function. You can plug it in and get a full charge at home or the office, or just drive. No range anxiety is necessary. If you drain the propulsion battery, the SUV still functions like a traditional hybrid — you just can’t drive on pure electricity. Since the PHEV doesn’t command a premium price, I’d make it my first choice.

<h4>The Takeaway</h4>

I’m not overly enthralled by the CX-90 or the CX-90 PHEV, which is probably a reflection of how I feel about the large SUV category these days. It’s a matter of personal taste and stage of life, but I’m more attracted to the smaller vehicles in Mazda’s lineup. I see too many solo drivers in full-size SUVs and pickup trucks to want to celebrate another arrival on the market. However, I recognize that a big SUV is suitable transportation for some families — and I’d recommend driving a 2024 Mazda CX-90 before making your buying decisions. You will be impressed.
