<h4>Overview</h4>

There has always been a gap between the Highlander and the Sequoia in the Goldilocks world of Toyota SUVs. For some buyers, the Highlander was too small, and the Sequoia was too giant. Enter the “just right” Grand Highlander, a new entry for 2024. The 2024 Grand Highlander comes in three trim levels: XLE (starting at $44,715), Limited (starting at $49,505), and Platinum (starting at $55,190). All prices include a $1,395 destination fee. The Grand Highlander Hybrid starts at $46,415 and runs in four trim levels up to a peak with the Hybrid Max Platinum, starting at $59,870. I spent a week with the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander AWD Limited with a base price of $49,460 and an as-tested price of $53,990, including a few welcome options (and a few overpriced ones).

<h4>1. The Third Row Is Genuinely ‘Just Right‘</h4>

I’ve never appreciated the third row of seating in the Highlander. Its latest iteration has 28.0 inches of legroom, making it a rough ride for anyone over 5 feet tall. The Grand Highlander provides 33.5 inches to stretch your legs – making the difference for full-sized adults. There’s more room for cargo behind the third row, too – 20.6 cubic feet versus 16.0 for the Highlander. The Grand Highlander nearly matches the Sequoia’s maximum legroom (33.7 inches) and luggage space (22.3 cubic feet).

<h4>2. The Turbo 4-Cylinder Grows on You</h4>

I’ve been driving big SUVs for decades now. I’ve adjusted from the V8 to the V6. I’m struggling to fall in love with the 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine found in the Grand Highlander and similar powerplants in other SUVs. It’s got less horsepower than the last V6 Toyota used in the Highlander (245 horsepower versus 295) but more torque (310 lb-ft versus 263), and gets similar fuel economy (22 – 24 mpg combined versus 23 – 24, depending on configuration). However, the comparison isn’t entirely valid, as the Grand Highlander is heavier and larger. I was satisfied with the turbo’s performance for the week, never wanting more power. I got used to the sound and fury of the turbo engine, but I found myself wondering about the Hybrid Max powertrain and its 362 net combined hp and 400 lb-ft of torque.

<h4>3. The ‘Grand’ Is for More Than Size</h4>

Toyota has to be careful not to step on the toes of its luxury offspring, Lexus. I could easily see the Grand Highlander fitting into the Lexus lineup, nudging the new TX over a slot. Toyota has a great way with fit and finish, both on the interior and exterior of the GH. The little details, like stitching on the dashboard and the seats, exude quality and craft. It’s a lovely vehicle.

<h4>4. Toyota Priced the GH to Protect the Highlander</h4>

The base LE Highlander starts at $40,665. The base GH is an XLE – one trim higher, and it starts at $44,715 – just $900 higher than the Highlander XLE at $43,815. I suspect many shoppers will be tempted to step up to the Grand Highlander to get the roomier third row. They may also get seduced by the Hybrid Max engine, which you can’t get on the Highlander.

<h4>5. The Options Add Up</h4>

My test car had $3,135 worth of options piled on top of an already nicely equipped vehicle. A few were easy no-brainers, like the Panoramic View Camera ($600) and the mudguards ($149). But I was a little shocked at the $895 price tag for a tow hitch and the $358 carpet floor mats. I was on the fence about the $499 dash cam since I use a $99 aftermarket one in my personal vehicle. But I love the convenience of a factory unit, and I consider a dash cam cheap protection against insurance fraud.

<h4>The Wrap</h4>

If you need to transport a growing family in style and comfort, and a minivan isn’t your style, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander deserves your consideration. Your teenagers have probably outgrown the Highlander’s third row already – and if they haven’t, they will soon.
