These 4WD systems usually allow the vehicle to switch between two-wheel drive (2WD) while driving on pavement and then to 4WD for slippery, off-road terrains. When the vehicle is in 4WD mode, the front and rear axles lock together resulting in all four wheels rotating at the same speed providing maximum traction between the terrain's surface and the tires. More complex 4WD systems, like those found in <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/awd-4wd/jeep" target="_blank">Jeeps</a>, use electronic sensors that can independently detect and alternate power based on which tire is experiencing slippage. 4WD vehicles are ideal for off-road and for hauling and towing. Engaging your 4WD system while on city streets could cause damage to your driveline. However, some truck or SUV buyers may have a choice of AWD or 4WD.
