The BMW 5 Series is a benchmark for executive-class luxury sedans. It deftly blends a comfortable ride with outstanding handling, for which it has earned its highly regarded reputation. From its cutting-edge technology, like its extended traffic jam assist feature, to the basics of offering a well-sorted rear-drive chassis, this BMW is the real deal. There's a wide range of vehicles to choose from -- the standard 4-cylinder models, the plug-in hybrid (which is also eligible for some federal tax credits) and a powerful flagship in the V8 550i. For our money, though, the classic 3.0-liter 6-cylinder 540i is a good bet. It not only provides great performance, but it also promises good fuel economy thanks to the addition of the mild-hybrid system.

2022 BMW 530e xDrive vs the competition
2020 Audi A6 -- This German rival offers advanced technology, understated styling and a high-quality interior. Like the 5 Series, the
A6 offers a variety of powertrains and surefooted AWD with its quattro system.
2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class -- Another icon that matches up from a powertrain and optional AWD standpoint. The E-Class is also about to undergo a makeover for the 2021 model year in the coming months.
2020 Lexus GS -- This RWD sedan offers traditional
Lexus advantages, such as high resale value and low operating costs. However,
Toyota's luxury division has announced that this is the last year for this midsize sedan.
Used Jaguar XF -- If you're looking for something a little different, you might try this English take on the classic European midsize sedan. You just might be able to score an
XF station wagon -- a body style that BMW no longer offers in the 5 Series.
Used Cadillac CTS -- Though
Cadillac doesn't build the
CTS any more, it remains a stylish sedan with well-sorted handling. The CTS is Cadillac's best effort to emulate BMW with a product that costs thousands less.
