If a version of the 2020 8 Series is a good fit financially and meets a potential buyer's desires, then there's no reason not to take the plunge. Select as many driver aids as possible. The 6-cylinder engine is more than powerful enough for all but the most thrill-addicted, who might well be interested in an M8.

The 2020 BMW 8 Series comes in 2-door coupe, convertible and 4-door Gran Coupe styles, with a choice of 6-cylinder or 8-cylinder engines. Equipment differs according to drivetrain, but even the entry-level model enjoys features that are extra in other BMW vehicles. Where's it's optional, AWD is $2,900, and this setup also includes Integral Active Steering, which is a form of rear-wheel steering. The
840i coupe ($88,895) has 18-in alloy wheels, keyless entry and ignition, adaptive LED headlights with "Laserlight" and automatic high beams, sport exhaust system, rain-sensing wipers, selectable driving modes, 12.3-in digital driver information display, full leather upholstery, heated front seats, armrests and steering wheel,
dual-zone automatic climate control, 14-way power-adjustable front sport seats with memory settings for driver and passenger, power-adjustable steering column, soft-closing doors, extended ambient LED cabin lighting, head-up display, power-operated trunk lid, universal garage door opener, Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay, two USB ports, Bluetooth, navigation with real-time traffic and on-street parking updates, Harman Kardon 464-watt/16-speaker surround-sound system, satellite and HD radio, 32 GB of multi-media storage, wireless charging, 10.25-in infotainment display, voice control and forward collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection. The
840i convertible ($98,395) adds a power-folding black fabric soft top and wind deflector, along with a rollover protection system, and it swaps in a 12-speaker/408-watt Harman Kardon surround-sound system. The
840i Gran Coupe ($85,895) has two extra doors, quad-zone automatic climate control, powered panoramic moonroof with sunshade, powered rear sun shade, a few USB-C ports for rear-seat occupants and a powered tailgate instead of a trunk lid. Otherwise, its equipment roster is much like the regular coupe's. The
M850i xDrive coupe ($112,895) employs the V8 engine, plus 20-in alloy wheels, M Sport brakes, adaptive M suspension with active anti-roll bars, M Sport differential, 16-way power-adjustable front sport seats with heating and ventilation, rear-wheel steering, rear spoiler and extra aerodynamic additions. The
M850i xDrive convertible ($122,395) has those same variations as the 840i convertible. Likewise, the
M850i xDrive Gran Coupe ($109,895) has the same differences as the 840i Gran Coupe. Among the many options is a Driving Assistance Package bringing blind spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, a self-parking feature for parallel and perpendicular spaces, drive recorder and the ability to check on the car remotely using a smartphone. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds
adaptive cruise control with stop/go and Traffic Jam Assistant for partially autonomous driving, front and
rear cross-traffic alert and evasive steering assistance. There's also a night vision feature, glass controls, more comfortable front seats and a 16-speaker/1,400-watt Bowers & Wilkins surround-sound system. Rear-drive versions of the 2020 8 Series are eligible for rear-wheel steering.
M850i versions of the coupe and Gran Coupe may be ordered with a lightweight M Carbon roof (made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic), extra cooling and high-performance tires. The M850i convertible offers neck-warming vents in the front seats. Trunk space for the 8 Series coupe is a useful 14.8 cu ft. The Gran Coupe isn't much better with its 15.5 cu ft, but it does have a handy hatchback and split/folding rear seats. Naturally, the convertible has the smallest trunk, at 12.4 cu ft.
