GMC is a leading brand of pickup trucks and SUVs, representing the premium professional offerings from General Motors. GMC’s top luxury trim level is called “Denali,” after the Alaskan mountain and national park of the same name. However, in recent years, the brand’s marketing has emphasized that Denali is more than just a trim level; it’s a unique luxury sub-brand of GMC.

<h4>122 Years of GMC History</h4>

The story of GMC trucks begins in 1900 when brothers Max and Morris Grabowsky founded the Grabowsky Motor Vehicle Co. in Detroit. The brothers began work on a prototype commercial truck with a single-cylinder engine and a 2-speed transmission. The first Grabowsky truck could carry one ton of cargo at speeds up to 10 MPH. The Grabowsky brothers renamed their company several times. Still, by 1911 the entire operation had been purchased by William C. Durant’s General Motors Company and renamed as the General Motors Truck Company, using the trade name GMC. GMC always oriented its trucks towards the working professional and was generally considered a premium product compared to GM’s Chevrolet trucks, even when the differences between the two were entirely trim-based.

<h4>The First Denali Models</h4>

The first use of the Denali name to indicate a luxury GMC vehicle came in 1997 when the company gave the public an advance look at the Yukon Denali full-size SUV at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The first Yukon Denali models offered for sale for the 2000 model year arrived in GMC showrooms in 1999. Top luxury interior materials and technical features distinguish the Denali models. The fit-and-finish of a Denali was a cut above, but the Denali also included a full-time 4WD system with a viscous center differential and limited-slip rear ax. In contrast, the more basic Yukon and Chevrolet Tahoe SUVs all had the older part-time 4WD system. The Denali also came with Autoride active suspension that continually adjusted shock damping based on various sensor inputs and performed automatic load leveling. GMC built those first Denali models at the end of a design cycle. Completely redesigned SUVs arrived for 2001 with the first Yukon XL Denali, which was a renamed GMC Suburban. The new 2001 models offered luxury features such as OnStar communications, a dashboard driver information center, and an alarm security system. Denali models also received an 11-speaker Bose steering system with steering-wheel audio controls.

<h4>GMC Sierra Denali and Quadrasteer</h4>
Denali models proved popular, and GMC followed up with a Denali version of the Sierra half-ton full-size pickup in 2002. In addition to the other Denali enhancements, the Sierra Denali offered Quadrasteer 4-wheel steering as standard equipment. The feature was available on other GMC and Chevrolet trucks as a $3,500 option. Quadrasteer improved low-speed maneuvering and high-speed stability and reduced the truck’s minimum turning circle to about 37 feet, almost 10 feet smaller than the standard Sierra. Quadrasteer used computer control and electronic power steering to turn the rear wheels counter to the front wheels in low-speed conditions and in the same direction when the truck was at speed. The driver could select 2-wheel or 4-wheel steer from the dash, along with a special towing mode.

<h4>The Envoy Denali</h4>
In 2005, GMC offered Denali trim on its midsize Envoy SUV. To differentiate the Denali, GMC provided a distinctive front grille, running boards, and polished alloy wheels in addition to Denali badging. On the inside, the Envoy Denali got heated power-adjustable front seats and top-quality Nuance leather upholstery throughout, paired with natural wood trim. Top-trim Denali technology included rain-sensing windshield wipers, Bose audio system, and a 5.3-liter Vortec V8 engine that could disable up to four cylinders to save fuel. The standard length and an extended Envoy XL were available in Denali trim.

<h4>2009 Yukon Denali Hybrid</h4>
GMC made its first hybrid full-size SUV, the Yukon Denali, in keeping with the tradition of introducing new technology with the Denali trim. GMC based the Denali Hybrid on its 6.0-liter V8 with cylinder deactivation, paired with an electric motor. The Yukon Denali Hybrid achieved up to 22 MPG in highway driving while still towing up to 6,200 pounds and carrying eight passengers. This was all on top of the traditional Denali features, including a power liftgate, rear parking assistance, remote start, auto-dimming rear view mirror, and satellite radio. Denali models were also among the first to receive a rear-view camera system, blind-spot monitoring, and second and third-row DVD entertainment systems.

<h4>Denali in the Modern Era</h4>

GMC expanded the Denali lineup into its heavy-duty 2500HD and 3500HD trucks in 2011, along with the midsize Acadia Denali as the brand’s first crossover SUV to carry the Denali badge. That expanded to the compact GMC Terrain crossover in 2013 and to the GMC Canyon midsize truck in 2017. The 2017 model year was also notable in that GMC surpassed one million vehicles bearing the Denali name, making the premium trim level a true sub-brand focused on luxury and technology.

In 2019, GMC launched a new generation of the Sierra Denali featuring the world’s first MultiPro tailgate and the CarbonPro bed made of pressed carbon fiber. The MultiPro is a tailgate-within-the-tailgate enabling six separate functions. You can drop the inner tailgate for easy bed access or use it as a backstop to create extra bed length. You can also drop both gates and the backstop to create steps up into the bed. With the CarbonPro bed option, a carbon-fiber composite material makes up the inner bed walls, dramatically exceeding steel or aluminum’s strength and damage resistance.

<h4>The 2020+ Yukon Denali</h4>
GMC again redesigned the Yukon SUV for the 2020 model year, and the latest iteration of GMC’s original Denali sets the standard for today’s luxury Denali sub-brand. The new Yukon abandoned the traditional solid rear axle in favor of an independent rear suspension used in smaller SUVs and passenger cars. This setup improves the ride and handling and gives the current generation Yukon Denali a premium feeling on the road. The current Yukon Denali comes with a 6.2-liter V8 rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All Yukon models are now paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and come with Active Response fully automatic dual-range 4WD. You can set the drivetrain to automatic 4-wheel-drive and leave it there all the time for confident traction in any conditions. The Yukon Denali will now tow up to 8,000 pounds and offers up to 122.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the front seats.

Air suspension is another new tech feature for the Yukon Denali. The adaptive suspension allows the driver to raise and lower the vehicle by up to two inches in either direction. The suspension automatically lowers at highway speeds to reduce wind resistance. Denali trim always includes class-leading convenience features, including a new trailering camera system with nine different views. Available camera views include the trailer hitch and a high-definition birds-eye view. The rear-view mirror can be switched to a rear-facing wide-angle camera view when driving. The list of Denali tech features goes on to include a best-in-class 15-inch head-up display to project navigation, infotainment, and critical driver information onto the windshield  The Denali also features air suspension and the Active Response 4WD system.

The interior of a modern Denali features open-grain wood trim and high-grade leather upholstery and a powered sliding center console with a hidden locking storage compartment for valuables. Finally, the Denali now includes magnetic ride control dampers in the suspension, giving the new Yukon a smooth and confident ride. While specifications for different vehicles are not always the same, you’ll find similar features in every Denali model available from GMC. Whether your needs are driving you to the heavy-duty trucks, the Sierra half-ton, the Yukon line, a crossover, or the small Canyon pickup, any GMC vehicle bearing the Denali name will have the top features available for its model year. For 2022, GMC has added the Denali Ultimate trim level to the Sierra full-size pickup, a new level above the peaks of Denali. If it meets with success and widespread acceptance, expect Denali Ultimate to spread across the entire GMC range.
