Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid (2nd Generation: 2019 - 2023)

Key Improvements: The second-generation Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid can drive 17 miles using only the battery at speeds up to 65 mph. The Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid battery (8.8 kWh) can recharge in 5 hours using a standard 120V wall outlet and 2 hours with a 240V outlet. Fuel economy is rated at 35 MPG / 90 MPGe with a total range of 480 miles between refueling.

Technology and safety improvements have also been made for the second-generation Crosstrek. An 8.0-inch infotainment with smartphone connectivity is standard and can be upgraded to include voice-activated GPS. Premium options include a 432-watt Harman Kardon audio system, a power moonroof, and a heated steering wheel which is likely the most desirable feature for those living in snowy regions. <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/subaru">Subaru</a> EyeSight Driver Assist Technology helps keep drivers safe with features like adaptive cruise control, automatic pre-collision braking, lane departure warning, and lane keep assist.

Unfortunately, the improved fuel economy, due to the larger hybrid battery, means that the maximum cargo capacity is 14% less, decreasing from 50.2 cubic feet to 43.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Thankfully, the Crosstrek comes standard with roof rails that can carry various items, which means the utility of this compact SUV remains relatively strong.

Model Updates: The Crosstrek Hybrid received a styling refresh in 2021, which included a new front bumper and grille.


Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid (1st Generation: 2014 - 2016)

The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid was first launched as the XV Crosstrek, and its name was shortened to Crosstrek in 2016. The differences between the XV Crosstrek and Crosstrek are limited except for a few technology features. Regardless of the model’s name, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is paired with a 0.55 kWh battery that powers an electric motor producing 13.4 hp and 48 lb-ft torque. The total power output is 160 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque, and it makes its way to the ground through a CVT transmission paired with Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD.

The hybrid Crosstrek has slightly less cargo capacity than the gas version, but the difference is negligible in most scenarios. Cargo capacity decreases from 51.9 to 50.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded and 22.3 to 21.5 cubic feet with the rear seats in the upward position. Both versions of the Crosstrek are highly capable when the road gets rough, thanks to the impressive 8.7 inches of ground clearance.

Model Updates: Gas mileage slightly improved for the 2015 model year, adding one MPG to city and highway fuel economy. City MPG improved from 29 to 30, while the highway MPG improved from 33 to 34. A 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system is now standard, and the top-of-the-line Touring trim features a 7.0-inch unit. The 2016 model year features a redesigned front bumper and headlights. Additional safety features like standard blind spot detection and lane-change assist were added.
