The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution RS ‘Rally Sport’ is a race-ready version of the highly popular rally car. The Evo RS was first introduced during the Evo VIII generation and is a stripped-down version that weighs nearly 150 pounds less than its already lightweight siblings. One of the easiest ways to tell an Evo RS apart from the other trims is the lack of the hard-to-miss rear spoiler. The RS eliminates many creature comforts in the name of weight reduction, and one of the items at the top of the list is a stereo delete. Thankfully, the 4G63 turbocharged 2.0-liter engine makes wonderful sounds that car enthusiasts can’t get enough of.

Key Improvements: The second iteration of the Evo RS came during the ninth-generation. The Evo IX RS gains even more power due to the introduction of MIVEC (Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing and Electronic Control). The upgraded engine increases power output to 286 horsepower and 289 lb-ft torque. Weight reduction and cost savings are at the core of the Evo VIII RS ‘Rally Sport’ philosophy. To put things into perspective, the standard Lancer Evolution weighs 3,321 pounds, and the RS weighs 3,175 pounds. Shedding 146 pounds of weight is possible by removing the rear wing, rear wiper, high-intensity discharge headlights, audio system, power locks, power windows, power mirrors, vanity mirrors, map lights, and the parking brake lever’s leather boot.

One of the most outrageous items on the removal list is anti-lock brakes. <a href="https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-sale/mitsubishi">Mitsubishi</a> didn’t play around when it designed the Evo RS to be a true rally car. Braking on loose surfaces often triggers ABS and might lead to less-than-desirable circumstances while rallying. To help put the power to the ground and improve handling, the RS comes equipped with a front limited-slip differential instead of an open one. The front, center, and rear differentials work harmoniously to keep the Lancer on track when conditions get slippery due to mud or snow during high-speed corners. Horsepower increased from 271 to 276, and torque got a slightly larger bump, rising from 273 lb-ft to 286 lb-ft. Handling also improves by adding an active center differential with three drive modes (tarmac, gravel, snow) to maximize performance in various conditions. The roof is now made of aluminum to lower the center of gravity and shed even more weight, 8.8 pounds, to be exact.
