Nissan Rogue (3rd Generation: 2021 - Current)

Key Improvements: The latest Rogue is by far the best yet. It’s similar in size to the previous generation but expresses a more rugged attitude and better in-cabin technology. The third-generation Rogue gains about an inch more rear-seat legroom but gives up some max cargo space by not having a sliding second-row seat. However, with the seat folded, overall cargo space grows by four cubic feet. The 2021 Rogue has a 181-horsepower 2.5-liter engine that gets about 30 mpg combined. Opt for a 2022 or newer Rogue, and you’ll get a 201-hp turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that provides plenty of pep and a 33-mpg combined fuel economy rating. Naturally, models equipped with all-wheel drive see slightly lower fuel economy numbers. Inside, the third-generation Rogue looks nothing like its predecessor, displaying more high-tech features, better materials, and more use of color. Additional standard driver assist systems include rear automatic emergency braking and the expansion of Nissan’s ProPilot Assist, which includes adaptive cruise control, blind-spot intervention, and traffic sign recognition. Equipment varies depending on trim, but you’ll find such advanced systems as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, rear seat climate controls, a head-up display, Bose audio, and a 360-degree Around View monitor.

Model Updates: For 2022, a new 1.5-liter turbocharged engine replaces the previous 2.5-liter, resulting in more horsepower and better fuel economy. The 2023 Rogue adds Amazon Alexa to SL and Platinum trims. 2024 brings a major exterior refresh highlighted by a bold new front-end design. Inside the cabin, SL and Platinum trims get a new 12.3-inch touchscreen featuring Google built-in. The SL also has a 12.3-inch digital cluster and a wireless charging standard.


Nissan Rogue (2nd Generation: 2014 - 2020)

Key Improvements: If you’re looking for modern driver-assist features, you’ll find them here, with a range of available systems spread out over the second generation’s seven-year run. Opting for a second-generation Rogue over the first gets you a larger SUV with more passenger and cargo volume, an available third-row seat, a sliding second-row seat, and a handy configurable cargo system Nissan calls Divide-N-Hide. The same 170-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine carries over but with better fuel economy, scoring a combined 28 mpg rating from the EPA. Beyond its unique look, the Rogue is a champ at swallowing up small items, with numerous cubbies, a massive console storage bin, and a glove box measuring half a cubic foot. The Rogue’s steering wheel lacks a telescoping feature, so getting comfortable behind the wheel may be an issue for taller drivers. Power comes from a 2.5-liter engine paired with a CVT, generating a combined 24 mpg rating. You won’t find any modern driver aids in this generation, but it does come with multiple airbags and visual aids like a rear backup camera and the Around View monitor. You will also find little in the way of high-tech, save for the optional 5-inch touchscreen radio with navigation and Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity. This generation of Rogue also has issues with the CVT’s longevity and reliability, so much so that Nissan extended the warranty for 2008-2010 models to 10 years or 120,000 miles, which won’t do you much good as both will likely have expired.

Model Updates: For 2009, the SL trim gains a flat-folding front passenger seat, auto speed-sensing door locks, and mood lighting. The 2011 Rogue offers automatic climate control, navigation, a rearview monitor, and a USB port for iPod connectivity. 2012 brings an available 360-degree Around View Monitor.
