2022 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe: Choosing the Right Trim

Although BMW badges it as a 2 Series, the 2022 BMW 2 Series Gran Sport isn’t quite a 2 Series. Why? It’s front-wheel drive (FWD). This, however, is common within the compact luxury segment.

You and I may not notice the difference, but BMW loyalists dismiss the Gran Coupe as not really a BMW at all. Should that alone disqualify it from your consideration? Nope.

Two of the Gran Coupe’s closest competitors are the Audi A3 and the Mercedes-Benz A-Class. As with the Gran Coupe, both offer FWD and all-wheel-drive (AWD) variants.

At the end of the day, it is BMW engineering. After all, its power delivery is a turbocharged engine bolted to an 8-speed automatic transmission: classic BMW.

What isn’t classic BMW is the engine is transversely mounted. In other words, its positioning is east-west rather than north-south. If that isn’t a deal-breaker, read on.

Here, that turbocharged engine is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. However, the tuning is different for each of its two Gran Coupe applications.

Despite the fact the Gran Coupe’s price is in line with the Audi and Benz models mentioned, we’d scrape together another $8,000 and buy a BMW 3 Series.

2022 BMW 228i Gran Coupe (starting at $35,700)

BMW offers the 228i Gran Coupe in FWD (228i sDrive) and AWD (228i xDrive). Our preference is the 228i xDrive.

In the 228i, the turbo 4-cylinder is tuned to produce 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque.

The estimated fuel economy is 24 miles per gallon city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg in combined driving (FWD). So if you spend the additional $2,000 on the AWD xDrive, the numbers are 23 mpg city/33 mpg highway/27 mpg combined.

No matter the number of drive wheels, every 228i model has the same standard content.

The base price includes 10-way power front sport seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry with push-button start, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and SensaTec upholstery.

Other standard gear includes LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, front-rear parking sensors, high-beam assist, forward-collision warning with low-speed emergency braking, blind-spot monitor, and lane-departure warning.

Among the infotainment and connectivity features are an 8.8-inch touchscreen, 10-speaker audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite-radio capability, and Bluetooth connectivity.

To add more driver aids, the $950 Driving Assistance Package includes adaptive cruise control and the Parking Assistant that locates appropriate parking spaces and helps steer into them.

For an extra $4,950, BMW offers the Dynamic Handling Package, including Dynamic Damper Control, M Sport Brakes, M steering wheel, aerodynamic kit, and 18- or 19-inch M wheels.

Adding the $995 destination charge to the 228i base price brings the total to $36,695. Financing that for 60 months at 3% interest works out to $630 per month. See the 2022 BMW 228i sDrive Gran Coupe models for sale and See the 2022 BMW 228i xDrive Gran Coupe models for sale

  • Driver aids – Forward-collision warning with low-speed emergency braking, blind-spot monitor, and lane-departure warning.

2022 BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe (starting at $45,500)

The M235i gets the same turbocharged engine and 8-speed automatic transmission to spin all the wheels. Here, however, BMW tuned it to deliver 301 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.

This is good for a sub-5.0-second zero-to-60 romp.

At 23 mpg city/32 mpg highway/26 mpg combined, the estimated fuel economy is nearly identical to the 228i xDrive despite the engine’s boosted performance.

Among the content upgrades and additions are 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seating, 14-way power front seats, and a navigation system.

Other standard fare includes M Sport Steering, M Sport Brakes, M, M sport suspension, and the rest of the M appearance and performance goodies.

The Driving Assistance Package is also available.

Adding the $995 destination charge to the $45,500 base price brings the total to $46,495. At 3% interest for 60 months, financing would run you $798 per month. See the 2022 BMW M235i xDrive Gran Coupe models for sale
