2022 BMW X2: Choosing the Right Trim

As one of the smallest SUVs in the BMW lineup, the X2 offers less interior space than the X1 SUV but a sleeker look and better performance. The X2 competes with other sporty small luxury SUVs such as the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA250, and Lexus UX.

Priced similarly to the competition, the BMW X2 requires a few more option boxes checked to match some rivals’ standard content, and its price can quickly climb when doing so. For performance fanatics who need SUV-like versatility but demand BMW-like performance, the X2 M35i will scratch that itch.

Unlike Audi and Lexus, BWM doesn’t offer differing trim levels. Instead, it starts with a single base model and allows the buyer to add packages and individual options. It’s worth noting that while not part of the premium luxury class, buyers can get a fully-loaded SUV like the Kia Seltos with many of the same features for about $10,000 less than a base BMW X2. 2022 BMW X2 sDrive28i (Starting at $36,000)

The “s” in X2 sDrive28i denotes a front-wheel-drive platform. As such, the sDrive28i is less expensive than its all-wheel-drive counterpart, the X2 xDrive28i, but the features set remains the same.

A 228-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission powers the X2. An 18.9-gallon fuel tank is unusually large for an SUV of this size, giving the X2 a highway range of nearly 600 miles.

Hill descent control and variable driver modes with settings for Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport are also standard fare, as is an auto start/stop engine cut-off system that can be temporarily deactivated.

Exterior features include 18-inch alloy wheels with all-season run-flat tires, chrome exhaust tips, power liftgate, and LED headlights with built-in cornering lights.

On the convenience list, the X2 comes nicely equipped with faux-leather SensaTec upholstery, 8-way power front seats with 2-way power driver’s side seat bolsters, rain-sensing wipers, a power-operated tilt/telescopic steering column, one-touch power windows at all four positions, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, and front and rear center armrests.

Also standard is BMW’s Advanced Vehicle & Key Memory system that retains the last position of the climate controls, exterior mirrors, power driver’s seat, and audio settings.

The X2’s audio system includes a 205-watt amplifier driving seven speakers. The standard navigation is controlled via an 8.8-in touchscreen or through the BMW iDrive controller mounted on the center console just aft of the shift lever.

Apple CarPlay is standard, but the X2’s older iDrive operating system doesn’t support Android Auto. A 1-year trial subscription to SiriusXM is free, after which you’ll need to pay to keep the service. Bluetooth streaming and BMW remote services are also standard.

On the safety front, the X2 includes forward-collision warning and low-speed automatic emergency braking. Lane-departure warning, front and rear park distance control, and a rearview camera are also no-charge features.

You can load up your X2 with options, with the most popular features bundled into two packages. The Convenience package ($2,250) brings Comfort Access proximity key keyless entry with hands-free tailgate, a panoramic moonroof, driver’s seat 4-way power lumbar support, power-folding side mirrors with an auto-dimming feature, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and enhanced interior ambient lighting.

The Premium package ($3,650) adds to the Convenience group a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, color head-up display, and a larger 10.25-in touchscreen navigation screen.

Other options include adaptive cruise control with stop/go, a parallel parking assistant, space-saver spare tire, wireless phone charging, and a 360-watt, 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

With the $995 destination fee, a 2022 BMW X2 sDrive28i with no options would come to just under $37,600. On a 60-month loan at 3%, that would get you a monthly payment of around $675. Find a BMW X2 sDrive28i for sale

2022 BMW X2 xDrive28i ($38,600)

The X2 xDrive28i standard features are identical to the front-drive X2, the only difference being the advanced all-wheel-drive system.

Known as Intelligent Four-Wheel Drive, the system uses an electronic clutch pack to vary torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. In English, the X2’s all-wheel-drive system is always active but varies depending on road conditions, speed, or cornering force. Upon detecting any hint of wheel slippage, torque is routed to both the front and rear axles and then to the wheels with the best traction.

Considering the improved traction and cornering ability providing by the xDrive system, why wouldn’t you spend the extra $2,000 to get it?

On the same 60-month loan calculation as the X2 sDrive28i, the monthly payment would come to $712, or just $37 more a month. Find a BMW X2 xDrive28i for sale
