2022 BMW 3 Series: Choosing the Right Trim

Continuing to set the standard among small sport sedans, the 2022 BMW 3 Series returns with only minor changes. BMW offers the 3 Series in three basic formats, and each includes an xDrive (all-wheel drive) variant.

Two gas engines – a turbocharged 4-cylinder and a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder – are now joined by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system which provides the range of powertrain options for the 3 Series lineup.

All three send output to the driven wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

A staggering number of options and option packages allow a luxury car shopper the chance to highly personalize a 3 Series.

2022 BMW 330i (starting at $41,450)

2022 BMW 330i Front Left Side in Blue

Motivated by a 255-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the BMW 330i turns in an EPA-estimated 26 miles per gallon in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg in combined driving.

If you ante up another $2,000 for the all-wheel-drive (AWD) 330i xDrive, the mileage numbers drop to 25 mpg city/34 mpg highway/28 mpg combined.

Among the standard features are a power moonroof, 14-way power front sport seats, rain-sensing wipers, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Also included are LED headlights, automatic high-beam assist, an 8.8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and two USB ports. Forward-collision warning with emergency braking is also standard.

If we were buying a 3 Series, we’d keep the price reasonable and stay with the 330i. With a few well-chosen options, such as a surround-view camera and blind-spot monitors, the 3 Series is a classy, fun-to-drive sedan that won’t bust your budget.

A Driving Assistance Professional Package will set you back $1,700, but includes blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with full stop-and-go, lane-centering assistance, and lane-departure warning.

Adding the $3,400 M Sport Package provides several M appearance features, a choice of 19-in. wheels, M Sport suspension, M Sport brakes, and more.

Adding the $995 destination charge to the base price brings the total cost to $42,445. With no money down on a 60-month loan at 3% interest, the monthly payment would be $729. Find a 2022 BMW 330i for sale.

2022 BMW M340i (starting at $54,700)

2022 BMW M340i Left in Blue

At the heart of the M340i is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine that makes 385 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque.

Its EPA mileage is 23 mpg city/32 mpg highway/26 mpg combined.

Opting for the M340i xDrive adds $2,000 to the bottom line.

Most of the M430i’s bump in equipment over the 330i involves the letter M, specifically this model’s degree of M Sport components.

Among the upgrades are variable sport steering, plus all of the gear in the 330i’s M Sport Package, a rear spoiler, 10.5-in. touchscreen, 12.3-in. digital driver display, and navigation system.

For $1,700, you can get the same Driving Assistance Professional Package available in the 330i.

To the base price add the $995 destination charge for a total price of $55,695. No down payment for a 60-month loan at 3% interest works out to $956 per month. Find a 2022 BMW M340i for sale.

2022 BMW 330e (starting at $42,950)

Setting the 330e apart from other 3 Series models is its PHEV propulsion system.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor generates a total of 248 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. This can be bumped to 288 hp when using an available sport driving mode BMW calls XtraBoost. Keep in mind, this added jolt of power lasts for a maximum of about 10 seconds.

The all-electric range is an estimated 23 miles, which is about average for a plug-in hybrid.

The EPA officially rates the 330e at 75 MPGe. Minus the electric power of the battery pack, the 330e posts more realistic fuel figures of 25 mpg city/33 mpg highway/28 mpg combined.

Spending the extra $2,000 on the 330e xDrive reduces the electric rating to 67 MPGe. It also reduces the regular estimated mileage to 22 mpg city/30 mpg highway/25 mpg combined. You’ll note those figures are worse than what a BMW driver gets in the entry-level 330i, in rear-wheel drive or AWD format.

There isn’t much daylight between the standard features in the 330i and 330e. Even the option packages are the same.

Adding the $995 destination charge to the 330e base price brings the total price to $43,945. With no money down on a 60-month loan at 3%, your monthly payment would be $754. Find a 2022 BMW 330e for sale.

2022 BMW 330e includes:

The M3 is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 with 473 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. It’s available with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic.

The M3 hits 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mpg. But the M3 is not about numbers; it’s more about handling feel, and how well this German sedan responds to its driver on a twisty road. And in the environment, the BMW M3 shines like few others, aided by sport-tuned suspension, big brakes, and an excellent 53/47 weight balance.

The M3 Competition Sedan ($72,800) and the AWD M3 Competiton xDrive sedan ($76,900) are even more potent, powered by a turbocharged inline-6 with 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. Equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the Competition M3s are even quicker to 60 mph, able to reach that speed in 3.8 (RWD) and 3.4 seconds (AWD) respectively.

Adding the $995 destination charge to the M3’s base price brings the total to $70,895. With no money down on a 60-month loan at 3%, your monthly payment would be $1,274. Find a 2022 BMW M3 for sale.

  • Big power – The turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 puts out 473 or 503 horsepower.
  • M Drive Professional – M3 buyers can choose this track data recorder, along with carbon-ceramic brakes. Cost to do this? Not cheap — about $9,000.
  • Carbon roof – The M3 has a carbon-fiber roof, which reduces vehicle weight and lowers the center of gravity for added sportiness.
