2022 BMW 5 Series: Choosing the Right Trim

Returning for 2022 with only a few changes, the 2022 BMW 5 Series holds its position as a class-leading sport sedan. It’s a blend of grace, luxury, and unfettered performance.

Providing the thrust for the various 5 Series models is a solid array of gas engines – a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a turbocharged inline-6-cylinder, and a turbocharged V8 – along with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system.

No matter the powertrain, an 8-speed automatic transmission delivers engine output to the wheels.

The 5 retains its technology edge with a full suite of standard and available driver’s aids.

With the exception of the M variants, the base prices of the various models are competitive within the segment. But, we urge caution when adding options and option packages. They can rapidly jack up the bottom line.

2022 BMW 530i (Starting at $54,200)

Generating the go is a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It makes 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. This is good for a gallop from zero to 60 miles per hour in roughly 6.0 seconds.

The government-estimated mileage is 25 miles per gallon in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg in combined driving.

If you decide to drop another $2,300 for the all-wheel-drive (AWD) 530i xDrive, your mileage will fall to 23 mpg city/32 mpg highway/27 mpg combined.

Unless you must have the extra ponies offered in the 540i, the 530i is the best deal. It comes with a grocery list of standard features, including 18-inch alloy wheels, LED adaptive headlights, and automatic high-beam assist.

Also included in the base price are 16-way power front sport seats, 12-volt power outlets, perforated SensaTec upholstery with contrast stitching, power moonroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, and keyless entry.

Among the standard technologies are front/rear parking sensors, ConnectedDrive interface, enhanced Bluetooth with voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto.

Front-collision warning with low-speed emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning are also included.

For $1,700, you can pick up the Driving Assistance Professional Package with traffic-jam assistant, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keeping assist, and rear cross-traffic alert.

If you want some of the M appearance and performance features, but wish to avoid the huge price tag for the M5, an M Sport Package is available for $3,050.

In addition to several appearance upgrades, the package includes the M Sport Suspension and variable steering.

Adding the $995 destination charge to the base price brings the total to $55,195. For a 60-month loan at 3% interest with no money down, the monthly payment would be $948. Find a 2022 BMW 530i for sale

  • 12.3-inch digital cluster – Recreating the look of analog gauges, this sharp digital screen provides driver information.
  • 16-way power front seats – Power adjustments include the side bolsters and lumbar.
  • ConnectedDrive – Interfaces your BMW with a personal device.

2022 BMW 530e (Starting at $55,550)

The PHEV 530e uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in tandem with an electric motor to produce 288 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.

A feature of the 330e’s Sport mode is XtraBoost. When engaged it delivers a 40-hp boost for 10 seconds.

Able to travel up to 21 miles on battery power, it’s rated at 64 MPGe. The battery range drops to 19 miles and the electric mileage rating to 62 MPGe when you spend another $2,300 on the AWD 530e xDrive.

Once the battery peters out, the government-estimated mileage of the 530e is 24 mpg city/29 mpg highway/26 mpg combined. It’s 22 mpg city/28 mpg highway/25 mpg for the 530e xDrive.

Basically outfitted like the 530i, the 530e offers pretty much the same option packages, as well.

Adding the $950 destination charge to the 530e base price brings the total to $56,545. Financing with no money down for 60 months at a 3% interest rate works out to $971 per month. Find a 2022 BMW 530e for sale

2022 BMW 540i (Starting at $59,950)

Under the hood of the 540i is a 335-hp 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6-cylinder engine. It generates 332 lb-ft of torque. BMW adds a bit of secret sauce by way of an electric motor.

That makes it a mild hybrid. Not only does the electric motor power the accessories, but it kicks in a few horsepower when the driver asks for a little boost in acceleration.

The government-estimated fuel economy is 25 mpg city/32 mpg highway/27 mpg combined. Shelling out the additional $2,300 for the 540i xDrive lowers the mileage to 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway/26 mpg combined.

The engines are the big differentiator between the 530i and 540i. That and the wheels: The 540i gets 19-inch alloy wheels.

To the 540i’s base price, add the $995 destination charge to reach a total of $60,945. For 60-month financing on that amount at 3% interest and no down payment, the monthly payment works out to $1,046. Find a 2022 BMW 540i for sale

2022 BMW M550i xDrive (Starting at $76,960)

What some consider the more affable M sedan, the 2022 BMW M550i xDrive still packs a V8 wallop. That it does so while delivering a more civilized ride than the M5 is a benefit for those who don’t have a track day in their future.

Another positive is that you can buy a Mazda MX-5 Miata with the cash you’ll save opting for the M550i.

Yet, it comes with many of the M goodies like M Sport Brakes, M Sport Differential, M Sport Suspension, and variable steering.

Its engine is a less-potent version of the 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 in the M5. In this guise, it generates 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.

Says BMW, it will reach 60 mph from a standstill in under 4.0 seconds.

The horsepower loss translates into better fuel economy. The government estimates mileage at 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway/20 mpg combined.

Beyond the M-related components and appearance cues, the M550i is outfitted much like the rest of the 5 Series family.

Adding the $995 destination charge to the M550i xDrive’s base price brings the total to $77,955. Financing that for 60 months at 3% interest and no money down will set you back $1,338 per month. Find a 2022 BMW M550i xDrive for sale

2022 BMW M5 (Starting at $103,500)

The M5 is certainly related to the tamer 5 Series but is like that crazy cousin who wears a kilt to Thanksgiving dinner.

Delivering all the comfort, technology, and amenities of the regular 5 Series models, the M5 then adds a huge dollop of hair-on-fire performance. The core of that performance is a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8.

Tuned for the M5, it generates 600 hp. But wait: Investing another $35,000 in the M5 CS competition version gets you 627 hp. Oh, and, according to BMW, a zero-to-60 time under 3.0 seconds.

The estimated mileage is the same for the M5 and M5 CS: 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway/17 mpg combined.

Adding the $950 destination charge to the M5’s base price brings the grand total to $104,495. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to a monthly payment of $1,794. Find a 2022 BMW M5 for sale
