What we like: Excellent powertrain choice includes Duramax Diesel; most customizing choices; best-in-class towing; refreshed exterior.
What we would change: Features can add up; add enhanced safety suite.
Overview: The 2022 Chevrolet Colorado continues to offer an impressive array of features. Its versatile powertrain choices include a 200 horsepower 2.5-liter inline-4 and a 308 hp 3.6-liter V6. For those needing a maximum amount of grunt, there’s the 2.8-liter Duramax Diesel that delivers 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. This combo delivers a best-in-class towing capability of 7,700 pounds. Available in either 2- or 4-wheel-drive, off-road enthusiasts can opt for the Z71 and ZR2 trim levels and their uprated rough-riding abilities.
What’s new for 2022: Minor cosmetic touches continue to move the Colorado forward. New for ’22, a dealer-installed Trail Boss trim level includes a lift kit, skid plates, and black finish wheels and trim. Most Colorado trim levels will receive revised fascias. New badging and wheel options, along with the LT’s chrome appearance package, are the big news items for the new year.
Features and technology: The Colorado delivers a livable ride that is the perfect alternative for those who want a do-it-all vehicle. The ride is well-tuned to isolate the cabin from bone-jarring vibrations you would expect from a larger truck. Being the only mid-size pickup with a Duramax 2.8-liter diesel powertrain option makes it a towing and mileage champ. Off-road improvements include a wider track, raised suspension, revised bumpers, and functional skidplate. This way, you can hit the office during the week and go trail-busting on the weekend.
What does the future hold: Expect mild refreshing in 2022 with a complete model overhaul in 2023. See 2022 Chevrolet Colorado models for sale near you
2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz
Base Price: $23,990 / Find out more about the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz
What we like: Two engine choices; 8-speed transmission instead of a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT); available AWD; 5,000-pound tow capacity.
What we would change: Make turbo engine available on all trim levels; improve ho-hum fuel economy.
Overview: Hyundai creates a new category, calling the Santa Cruz a sports adventure vehicle instead of a pickup truck. We think it’s more concerned with recreational activities than actual work. Standard power comes from a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder making 190 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends the power to the front or all-wheel-drive systems. The more potent 2.5-liter turbo delivers 275 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque with the help of a dual-clutch transmission that pre-loads an upcoming gear change. Fuel mileage is a mediocre 23 mpg with the base engine and a somewhat disappointing 22 mpg when optioned with the Turbo-4. The naturally-aspirated inline-4 can tow 3,500 pounds, while the turbo ups the ante to 5,000 pounds.
What’s new for 2022: The Hyundai Santa Cruz is all-new for 2022. It speaks with a Southern accent, coming from the Hyundai factory in Montgomery, Alabama, and is on sale at dealerships now.
Features and technology: The Santa Cruz has four trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Premium, and top-line Limited. Even the base SE model is well-equipped to include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Safety features are also on-tap with forward-collision warning with automatic braking, lane-keep assist, and safe-exit warning to tell you when it’s safe to open the door on the traffic side of the vehicle. The SEL adds Blind-spot Collision Avoidance and a heated power driver and passenger seat.
The SEL Premium brings more power with the 2.5-liter turbo-4, dual-zone climate control, LED lighting, and Hyundai’s digital key app. The top-shelf Limited model adds a digital gauge cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen display with blind-spot view monitor. In the back, the Santa Cruz bed includes a removable in-bed power outlet, under-floor storage well, and a lockable and retractable tonneau cover.
What does the future hold: The Santa Cruz is new for 2022. Expect only minor trim changes for the next few years. See 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz models for sale near you
