2022 Ford Mustang: Choosing the Right Trim

Ford nibbled a little around the edges of the 2022 Ford Mustang, but it returns essentially unchanged.

There are a couple of new appearance packages. The most notable of the group is the Stealth Edition ($1,995) for the EcoBoost Premium turbocharged 4-cylinder models. It features a blacked-out appearance, including clear covers for the LED taillights. A performance rear wing is also part of the package.

Ford is basically out of the car business, but Mustang is a halo vehicle for the brand and will probably survive as long as the Ford brand does.

We like Mustang for its powerful engines, athletic handling, comfy ride, and good looks. We also like that it comes in fastback and convertible configurations.

Mustang’s trim-level lineup for 2022 is EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT Fastback, GT Fastback Premium, and Mach 1.

Ford offers the GT Fastback and Mach 1 only with the hardtop. There is a convertible version of the other grades.

For all intents and purposes, the coupe and convertible for each grade are equipped the same. Moreover, the only real difference between the EcoBoost and the corresponding GT is the engines.

Power & Fuel Economy

Supplying the EcoBoost models with their go is a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder EcoBoost engine. A 6-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels.

A $1,595 upcharge is required to swap in the optional 10-speed automatic transmission no matter the engine.

The EPA fuel economy of the 2.3-liter Mustang coupe with the 6-speed transmission is 21 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg in combined driving. With the 10-speed automatic, it’s 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway/25 mpg combined.

Opting for the convertible with the manual transmission gets you 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway/23 mpg combined. With the 10-speed, it’s 20 mpg/28 mpg/23 mpg.

Ford offers a High-Performance Package for EcoBoost models. Tacking it on the coupe with the 6-speed drops the mileage to 20 mpg city/27 mpg highway/22 mpg combined. With the 10-speed, the numbers are 20 mpg/27 mpg/23 mpg.

EcoBoost convertibles with 6-speed and the High-Performance package are rated at 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway/21 mpg combined. With the 10-speed automatic, it’s 19 mpg/26 mpg/22 mpg.

A 5.0-liter V8 generates the thrust for the GT models. In coupe versions with the 6-speed manual, the EPA figures are 15 mpg city/24 mpg highway/18 mpg combined. With the 10-speed automatic, the numbers barely move to 15 mpg/24 mpg/19 mpg.

Convertibles with the V8 come only with the 10-speed automatic. Their fuel numbers are 15 mpg city/23 mpg highway/18 mpg combined.

Powering Mach 1 is a high-output (HO) version of the 5.0-liter V8. With the 6-speed manual, this Mustang is rated at 14 mpg city/22 mpg highway/17 mpg combined. With the 10-speed automatic, it’s 15 mpg/23 mpg/18 mpg.

  • HO 5.0L V8 – Mach 1 uses a high-output version of the GT’s V8. It delivers 480 horsepower (20 more than in the GT).

  1. After reading your comment, I retraced my research to double-check this. There wasn’t so much an announcement as Ford simply didn’t include fuel-economy numbers for the V8 convertible manual transmission in the 2022 Mustang Technical Specs. I have reached out to Ford to get confirmation. I’ll post their response when I receive it.

  2. “Convertibles with the V8 only come with the 10-speed automatic.”
This is news to me; I have not seen a statement of this major change (some would say) anywhere else.
