Because it was all-new last year, we don’t expect any major changes for the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E.
The First Edition trim is discontinued. All-wheel drive (AWD) is now available on the California Route 1 grade.
This all-electric (EV) crossover bears the Mustang name, and a few of the pony car’s styling cues represent Ford’s effort to transform Mustang into a sub-brand.
It’s even a blast to drive but has little else in common with the iconic sport coupe.
We don’t blame Ford. They had to name it something, right?
Forgetting its loose ties to Mustang, the Mach-E stands quite nicely on its own as an EV. Riding on a new EV chassis, it’s roughly the size of the Ford Escape. Like Escape, Mach-E seats five.
In our drive time with it, we found it to be spirited, roomy, and well-appointed. The ride is less than pliant over rougher surfaces. However, that’s the Mustang DNA seeping in.
Its closest rivals are arguably the Tesla Model Y, Audi e-tron, and Jaguar I-Pace.
We like it for its maximum range of up to 300 miles, bigger-than-expected front trunk (frunk), high levels of technology, and athletic suspension.
Ford offers the Mach-E in four grades: Select, California Route 1, Premium, and GT.
Rear-wheel-drive (RWD) is standard in the first three trims, with AWD a $2,700 option. AWD is standard in the GT.
The standard-range RWD Select and Premium have a maximum range of up to 230 miles. Opting for AWD drops that number to 211 miles.
An extended-range trim, the RWD California Route 1 boasts the 314-mile maximum range. When equipped with AWD, the California Route 1 and the AWD GT can roll up to 312 miles on a full charge.
Power & Fuel Economy
Mach-E’s RWD standard-range electric system consists of a 266-horsepower rear-mounted motor fueled by a 68-kWh battery pack. The eAWD versions get a second electric motor on the front axle. It boosts the torque from 317 lb-ft to 428 lb-ft, which explains the ding to the AWD range.
The government uses a different formula to estimate mileage for vehicles capable of operating on electric-only propulsion. It’s called Miles Per Gallon equivalent (MPGe).
For RWD standard-range models, the EPA fuel economy is 110 MPGe in the city, 96 MPGe on the highway, and 103 MPGe combined. Opt for AWD, and the numbers drop to 99 MPGe city/86 MPGe highway/93 MPGe combined.
Extended-range versions get a larger 88-kWh battery pack prodding 290 hp from the rear-mounted electric motor. Adding the second motor to the front axle for the AWD versions results in the same boost in torque as in the standard range.
Extended-range Mach-Es have EPA figures of 104 MPGe city/90 MPGe highway/97 MPGe combined. With AWD, the extended-range numbers drop to 97 MPGe/84 MPGe/91 MPGe.
The AWD 480-hp GT is rated at 90 MPGe city/77 MPGe highway/84 MPGe combined. The GT Performance, with extra torque, is rated at 88 MPGe city/75 MPGe highway/82 MPGe combined.
