In the wake of launching a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Santa Fe variant for this model year, Hyundai didn’t tinker with its 2022 Santa Fe Hybrid (HEV). It returns unchanged.
This isn’t surprising since the Santa Fe Hybrid was first released in 2021.
Santa Fe carves out a position between the wildly popular Tucson, a hybrid version, and the three-row Palisade.
In fact, the Santa Fe HEV shares its hybrid system with the Tucson HEV.
Although somewhat larger, it aligns fairly well with the Toyota Venza Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, and the Honda CR-V Hybrid.

Every Santa Fe HEV comes with forward-collision warning with emergency braking, lane-following assist, lane-keeping assist, and driver-attention warning.
Hyundai offers the Santa Fe HEV in three grades: Hybrid Blue, Hybrid SEL Premium, and Hybrid Limited.
The guts of Santa Fe’s hybrid system are a 178-horsepower 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine mated to a 60-hp electric motor and a 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
The combined output is 226 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed automatic transmission hustles that output to all four wheels (AWD).
Drivers may dial in one of three (Comfort, Sport, and Smart) drive modes.
The government estimates put fuel economy at 33 miles per gallon in the city, 30 mpg highway, and 32 mpg in combined driving.
2022 Hyundai Hybrid Blue (starting at $33,750)
If you want to compare apples to apples, the Hybrid Blue is basically the regular Santa Fe SEL AWD with its optional Convenience Package ($30,700). Plus, a couple of additional goodies.
Among the standard features are 18-inch alloy wheels, hill-start assist, auto on-off LED headlights, high-beam assist, LED taillights, and keyless entry with push-button start.
Other standard content includes an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, heated outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, and Blue Link Connected Car.
From the SEL convenience package comes a hands-free power liftgate, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a 12.3-inch LCD cluster display.
To the driver aids already listed, Hybrid Blue adds blind-spot monitoring with lane-keeping, rear cross-traffic alert with emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.
The infotainment system adds an 8-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker audio system, Bluetooth with voice recognition, and multiple USB ports.
Other infotainment features include satellite-radio capability, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and wireless device charging.
Although Hyundai offers some dealer-installed accessories, it doesn’t offer any HEV options.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid Blue includes:
- Blue Link Connected Car – With the appropriate smartphone app, your phone can interface with your vehicle. It can remotely unlock the doors, locate your vehicle, and more.
- Hands-free power liftgate – When the system senses the key fob close by, it automatically unlocks and fully raises the liftgate.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – You can access your smartphone apps and functions through the vehicle’s infotainment system without cables.
2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid SEL Premium (starting at $37,810)
Building on the Blue content, the SEL HEV adds leather seating, an 8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, a panoramic sunroof, and Highway Driving Assist.
Among the other upgrades are a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and a 10.25-in. touchscreen.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid SEL Premium includes:
- Panoramic sunroof – Power-operated, it’s a dual-panel glass roof with a sunshade. You can retract the sunshade to expose both glass panels. The front panel also retracts for an open-air experience.
- Highway Driving Assist – Hyundai’s semi-autonomous driving system, helping drivers steer and brake under certain conditions.
- Harman Kardon audio system – A 12-speaker surround-sound system includes a subwoofer and the Clari-Fi sound restoration technology.
2022 Hyundai Hybrid Limited (starting at $40,160)
To the SEL Premium content, the Hybrid Limited adds power-folding outboard mirrors and LED projector headlights.
Also included are ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power driver’s seat extension cushion.
Other standard features are front-rear parking assist, a 360-degree surround-view monitor, a blind-spot monitor, rain-sensing wipers, and Remote Smart Parking Assist.

2022 Hyundai Hybrid Limited includes:
- Ventilated front seats – In addition to heating the front seats in winter, these seats can also blow out cool air in hotter temperatures.
- Surround-view monitor – A 360-degree birds-eye view of your vehicle and its surrounding area, it helps you navigate when parking.
- Remote Smart Parking Assist — Allows the driver to exit the vehicle before pulling into or backing into a parking space. Using the key fob, the driver can then remotely drive the vehicle into the space. Then reverse the process when ready to leave.
