2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer: Choosing the Right Trim

For most of its life, the Grand Wagoneer name meant actual off-road ability wrapped in supreme luxury and yards of glued-on wood appliques. The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer revives this legacy but without the copious wood paneling.

In the Grand Wagoneer, Jeep hopes to challenge the world’s best luxury SUVs, establishing its own American premium identity similar to Land Rover’s association with the best in British design.

Offered in four upscale trims, the Grand Wagoneer breaks new ground in the areas of luxury, color, and original features. It also breaks new ground for Jeep, with a loaded Grand Wagoneer pushing past the $100,000 mark. Many may raise an eyebrow to a six-figure Jeep, but keep in mind the old Grand Wagoneer of the 1980s and ’90s is a coveted must-have for the Jackson Hole set.

Regardless of which Grand Wagoneer you choose, you’ll be getting a three-row, seven- or eight-passenger SUV powered by a 471-horsepower 6.4-liter V8. This beast of an engine sends power to all four wheels courtesy of Jeep’s Quadra-Drive II 4-wheel drive system.

We recently drove a 2022 Grand Wagoneer, an opulent Series III model that comes standard with almost every conceivable option and an as-tested price of $110,575.

Our findings: The 2022 Grand Wagoneer shines as a quiet and comfortable 3-row SUV. It’s easy to see out of (aided by a digital rearview mirror and large side-view mirrors), and the proven 6.4-liter V8 boasts an abundance of power. The Hemi powerplant is totally relaxed in daily operation, and the 8-speed automatic deserves praise for its smooth shifting.

And while the Grand Wagoneer has a rugged truck-style frame, it’s blessed with independent rear suspension. This is good not just for third-row cabin volume, but it also helps the big SUV corner with the composure of a smaller vehicle, aided by standard air suspension. Indeed, the chassis engineers have succeeded in making a vehicle with excellent ride quality, but none of the sloppiness or excessive body roll sometimes associated with such large and high vehicles.

Inside, the new 2022 Grand Wagoneer positively drips with luxury, in everything from the quilted Palermo interior leather and genuine walnut trim to the standard head-up display and refrigerator in the center console. Room is excellent in all three rows, and there’s enough cargo space behind the rear bench for a week’s worth of groceries. Both power-adjustable rear rows fold down with the touch of a button.

On multiple fronts, the Warren, Michigan-made 2022 Grand Wagoneer has impressed us. From its excellent build quality and good interior space to its abundant luxury, connectivity, and technology, this big SUV shines. Yes, you’ll have to pay for all this engineering excellence, but the new Grand Wagoneer is by no means the only large and luxurious American SUV that cracks the $100,000 barrier.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Series I (Starting at $87,590)

The Series I represents the first of four Grand Wagoneer trims.

Beginning with the exterior, the Series I includes 20-inch machined aluminum wheels with gray-painted pockets, acoustic glass for the windshield and doors, rear privacy glass, and a power liftgate. The Grand Wagoneer’s power-folding heated side mirrors include a tilt-down-in-reverse feature with auto dimming for the driver’s side.

Advanced lighting systems include LED projector headlamps, taillights, and foglights that aim into corners when turning. Approach lamps are under the door handles and rear liftgate and animated front and rear lighting puts on a little light show every time you approach the vehicle.

Power deployable running boards are standard, as are rain-sensing wipers, active grille shutters, heated wiper de-icers, a rear backup camera washer, and loads of polished stainless steel moldings. A proximity key allows entry and start simply by having the key fob in a pocket or purse.

Opening the Grand Wagoneer’s doors reveals a plush interior and even more lighting upgrades, including multicolor ambient lighting. The Series I features Nappa leather upholstery with dark walnut wood accents and captain’s chair second-row seats. The third row consists of a 60/40 power-folding seat.

Buyers have the option to swap the second-row captain’s chair seating for a 40/20/40 bench seat.

The driver and front passenger enjoy 20-way power seats that include 4-way power-adjustable headrests and lumbar support. The Series I front seats are heated and ventilated with massage, while the second-row captain’s chairs are limited to just heat.

The Grand Wagoneer includes two-person memory for the driver’s seat, power-adjustable heated steering wheel, and exterior mirrors, and the rear seats have headrests with a remote folding mechanism. A set of power-adjustable pedals help drivers of all sizes find the perfect fit.

Overhead, a tri-panel panoramic sunroof with polarized glass and power sunshade fills the ceiling, sharing space with an overhead storage console and a rear conversation mirror. The rear doors also have manual sunshades and luxury door panel trim.

From the driver’s seat, the Grand Wagoneer Series I is awash in digital screens, boasting a 12.3-inch configurable digital instrument cluster, a 12-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, and an available passenger screen for helping with navigation, watching Amazon Fire TV, or streaming audio via Bluetooth.

A head-up display projects important information onto the windshield where the driver can quickly glance at it without looking away from the road, and a 360-degree camera provides a clear view of what’s in front, beside, and behind the Grand Wagoneer.

The Grand Wagoneer’s cabin temperature is regulated via a 4-way automatic climate control system covering all three rows, while cabin entertainment comes courtesy of a 950-watt, 19-speaker McIntosh audio system. Navigation comes standard with the infotainment setup, as does Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM 360L.

Several subscription-based SiriusXM and Jeep connected services are available to flush out the infotainment system’s capabilities even further. Multiple USB charge ports accompany front and rear 12-volt outlets, a back seat 115-volt plug, and a front console wireless charge pad.

Advanced driver-assist systems include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, and front and rear park assist with emergency stop. A rear-seat reminder that alerts the driver to check the back seats before exiting the vehicle is standard, as is an automated parking system that can parallel park the Grand Wagoneer.

Finally, the Grand Wagoneer’s mechanical highlights include an electronically detachable front axle, hill descent control, electric parking brake, and Selec-Terrain system with various modes for snow, mud, sand, and rocks.

Jeep’s Quadra-Lift air suspension is also standard, as are active dampers, brakes that help dry themselves in inclement weather, and slow-motion cruise control for off-roading dubbed Selec-Speed. The Grand Wagoneer comes standard with a Class IV trailer hitch and 7- and 4-pin wiring harness.

A full complement of airbags, electronic traction and stability control, and a safety distance monitor that warns when tailgating complete the safety roster.

Option packages for the Series I include the Convenience Group that adds Night Vision with pedestrian and animal detection, a driver drowsiness monitor, a digital rearview mirror with rear camera, and traffic sign recognition.

The 2nd-Row Seating Group replaces the captain’s chairs with a 40/20/40 bench seat featuring power tip and slide and includes dual USB charge ports.

The Rear Seat Entertainment Group adds dual 10-inch rear-seat entertainment screens, Amazon Fire TV, and video USB port.

The Heavy Duty Trailer-Tow Package comes with chrome tow hooks, heavy-duty engine cooling, locking in-vehicle safe with digital keypad, trailer brake control, and rear camera-linked Trailer Hitch Line-up Assist and Trailer Hitch Zoom.

Individual options include 22-inch polished wheels and passenger-side interactive display.
