2022 Jeep Wagoneer: Choosing the Right Trim

The all-new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer is an authentic, 3-row 8-passenger SUV. Long missing from Jeep’s stable, the Wagoneer looks to challenge the dominance of luxury SUVs like the GMC Yukon Denali and Lincoln Navigator, as well as near-luxury models like the Toyota Sequoia Platinum.

In typical Jeep fashion, the Wagoneer promises to combine impressive luxury and design with rugged off-road capability. And, if the Wagoneer isn’t good enough for your blue blood, its more expensive counterpart, the Grand Wagoneer, should do the trick.

For now, the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer comes in just two trims, those being Series II and Series III. Later in the model year, a less expensive (and lesser equipped) Series I will arrive.

The Wagoneer comes standard with rear-wheel drive and offers two 4×4 systems guaranteed to pull you through almost any obstacle. The Wagoneer’s standard 5.7-liter V8 engine includes a 48-volt electric starter/generator, allowing it to tow up to 10,000 pounds.

In our recent drive of a 2022 Wagoneer, Autotrader found the large new 3-row SUV to be highly refined and comfortable. It’s remarkably quiet inside the vehicle, and the hybrid-assisted 5.7-liter V8 sends 392 horsepower to the wheels through a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission.

Although the Wagoneer suspension is tuned for occupant comfort, this is a big SUV that can work. Max tow capacity, after all, is 10,000 pounds. At the same time, the chassis is at home on winding roads, thanks in part to natural-effort electric-assist steering and a firm brake pedal with crisp initial bite.

The 2022 Wagoneer feels smaller than it is, and it’s one of those vehicles that makes 75 mph feel like about 55. It might be wise to use adaptive cruise control, which controls vehicle speed while constantly maintaining the gap to the vehicle in front.

Inside, the comfort quotient is expectedly high. Space is good in all three rows of the new Wagoneer, and the digital gauges and infotainment systems allow a tremendous amount of personalization. We’re big fans of the Uconnect 5 infotainment interface.

The new Wagoneer SUV further proved its worth on an off-road course, climbing rocky grades with ease and slowly negotiating other tough stretches in low range. While the new Wagoneer likely won’t get a Trail-Rated designation, we nevertheless feel it’s the most capable large 3-row SUV in the dirt.

2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series II (Starting at $67,995)

At nearly $70,000, the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series II is hardly an entry-level SUV. It comes impressively well equipped, well beyond the expected power windows, remote keyless entry, and Bluetooth smartphone connectivity.

We begin with Wagoneer’s exterior, where the handsome styling gets enhanced with massive 20-inch alloy wheels. Active grille shutters close at high speeds to help improve aerodynamics, and acoustic glass helps lessen wind noise inside the cabin.

Other exterior features include rain-sensing variable wipers, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, and tilt-down in reverse feature. The driver’s mirror automatically dims when sensing approaching headlights. LEDs replace traditional bulbs in the headlights, taillights, and fog lights that also illuminate in corners. Around the back, a hands-free power liftgate features an intermittent wiper and an integrated rear backup camera with a washer.

Not visible is a limited-slip rear differential and a load-leveling rear suspension.

Moving to the Wagoneer’s interior, we find three-row seating with a generous third-row and ample cargo space. The third-row seats split in a 60/40 configuration. The second-row is also a 40/20/40 split with power tip and slide and manual recline and feature headrests that can fold remotely, improving rear visibility.

Up in front, you’ll find 8-way power front seats with 4-way power lumbar support.

The heated and ventilated front seats are covered in perforated Nappa leather upholstery, covering the second-row seats.

The Wagoneer’s power-tilt-and-telescoping heated steering wheel works in concert with driver’s seat memory controls. The system can even remember the exterior mirror positions. Power-adjustable foot pedals help drivers of all sizes find the perfect driving position and are also part of the driver’ seat memory program.

A proximity key fob allows entry to the vehicle without having to remove the fob from your purse or pocket. Approach the Wagoneer, touch a button on the door handle, and the doors unlock. Once inside, a press of a button is all that is needed to start the engine.

The Wagoneer’s high-tech interior includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, tri-zone climate controls, and a 10-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen infotainment system with standard navigation. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM 360L are all included, as is access to Jeep’s in-depth connected services. A nine-speaker Alpine audio system with a subwoofer completes the package.

There are multiple ways to charge phones, laptops, or tablets, including a wireless charge pad, two 12-volt outlets, one 115-volt out, and four USB ports comprised of two media data ports up front and two charging ports in the second row.

Standard safety systems include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear park assist with automatic braking, and a tire pressure monitor.  Also standard is adaptive cruise control with the ability to slow or stop with traffic flow, then resume speed once the coast is clear.

Order the Wagoneer Series II with 4-wheel drive, and you’ll get a front differential with axle disconnect and the Quadra-Trac I single-speed on-demand transfer case. With this system, 4-wheel drive remains permanently engaged, requiring no intervention from the driver. Also standard is the Selec-Terrain system with modes for various conditions such as snow, mud, and sand.

Be prepared to tack on an additional $3,000 to the MSRP for the Wagoneer’s 4×4 system.

The Wagoneer’s option packages are nearly as numerous as its standard equipment list. Selecting the Convenience Group adds auto high beam headlights, a driver drowsiness monitor, a head-up display, heated second-row seats, parallel and perpendicular parking assist, and Intersection Collision Assist. ICA monitors for cross traffic, such as when approaching a four-way intersection, and will slow or stop the vehicle if it detects a potential collision. The package also brings a 360-degree surround-view camera, traffic sign recognition, and manual rear window sunshades.

The Premium Group adds 22-inch wheels, a tri-pane panoramic sunroof, adjustable roof rail crossbars, and a foldable cargo shade. The Second-Row Seating Group brings second-row captain’s chair seats with power tilt-and-slide, a power-folding third-row seat, heated second-row seats, and a second-row console.

The Rear Seat Entertainment Group includes Amazon Fire TV, dual 10.1-inch screens, and a video USB port.  A Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package tacks on a 3.92 rear axle ratio, electronic rear limited-slip differential, chrome tow hooks, trailer brake control, trailer hitch line-up assist, and trailer hitch zoom, the latter two features using the rear backup camera to help guide the hitch when backing up to a trailer.

Wagoneer Series II 4×4 offers the Advanced All-Terrain Group that includes 18-inch off-road wheels, all-terrain tires, and Quadra-Trac II two-speed on-demand with low range. Also included are an electronic 3.92 ratio limited-slip rear differential, skid plate coverage for the front axle, transfer case and fuel tank, and the Quadra-Lift air suspension. The package’s Selec-Speed control system acts like cruise control, only for slow, off-road crawls.

A notable standalone option is the front passenger side display screen for controlling media, navigation, and entertainment and providing the passenger the ability to stream content from a smartphone wirelessly.

With the $2,000 destination fee, the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series II costs $69,995. With no money down, the monthly payment on a 60-month loan at 3% financing comes to $1,258. See 2022 Jeep Wagoneer Series II models for sale
