2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe: Choosing the Right Trim

Dashing and forceful, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE Coupe returns without significant change. This isn’t surprising because the 2021 edition was completely redesigned.

The sloped-roof version of the GLE SUV, the GLE Coupe brings a bit of jaunty style to the beefed-up AMG edition of the full-size GLE.

Still a functional and capable SUV, the GLE Coupe manages to cost more than its GLE SUV sibling. Moreover, with its AMG creds, it outperforms the standard SUV, as well.

Lining up against the GLE Coupe is a squad of serious rivals, such as the Audi Q8, BMW X6, and the Porsche Cayenne Coupe.

We like the GLE Coupe for its blend of athleticism and SUV functionality, off-road capability, the wide array of driver aids, and the wealth of high-tech goodies.

Mercedes separates the GLE Coupe into two turbocharged-engine-based grades: AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S.

Both run on a high-performance all-wheel-drive (AWD) system or 4Matic in the Mercedes lexicon. Both rely on a 9-speed automatic transmission to spread around engine output to all four wheels.

Providing the propulsion for the AMG GLE 53 is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6-cylinder engine subsidized by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. They combine to make 429 horsepower.

Government estimates rate the AMG GLE 53 fuel economy at 18 miles per gallon in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg in combined driving.

The AMG GLE 63 S sources its thrust from a 603-hp 4.0-liter V8. Its estimated mileage is 15 mpg city/19 mpg highway/17 mpg combined.
