The 2022 Ram HD trucks return with a few enhancements and packages. Because this is a snapshot of the Ram HD, we won’t wade through all of them.
You can’t tell the players without a program. Nowhere is that more true than when shopping for full-size trucks.
Here we are looking at the Ram HD trucks. They are separated into classes, including 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500. Their primary differences are in how much they can haul and tow.
For the most part, the standard features of each grade are similar for each class.
Here we will primarily concentrate on the 2022 Ram 2500 and 2022 Ram 3500 trucks. The 4500 and 5500 are primarily commercial-grade trucks suitable for any small business need.
The Ram 4500 and Ram 5500 trucks are almost strictly commercial trucks. Ram markets them as a cab and chassis. Customers then pick what to add to the back of the cab.
There is little daylight between them, but the Ram 5500 can do a little more work than the Ram 4500.
Because there are so many variables in the way of cab configurations, cargo-box lengths, engines, classes, drive wheels, and so on, we will try to keep it simple.
The Regular Cab seats three with two doors. The Crew Cab seats five or six with four doors. The Mega Cab also seats five or six with four doors but is a longer cab with more interior space.
Then, of course, there are the trim levels. For 2022, the grades are Tradesman, Big Horn (Lone Star in Texas), Power Wagon, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited.
Only the Tradesman and the Big Horn offer the Regular Cab. All trims offer the Crew Cab. Only 4WD versions of the top four grades offer the Mega Cab.
Although there are several changes among these trims, classes, and configurations, most are very limited in scope. That is, they apply to just one trim or class.
A universal enhancement is the all-new Uconnect 5, standard on all 2500 and 3500 models grades except Tradesman.
Ram says Uconnect 5 is four times faster with three times more memory than the previous Uconnect. It also features Wi-Fi capability.
For all but the Power Wagon trim, you may choose between rear-wheel drive (RWD) or 4-wheel drive (4WD). The Power Wagon is 4WD only.
Likewise, for all but the Power Wagon, you may pick among three powertrains.
The standard engine for all grades is a 6.4-liter V8. Ram mates it with an 8-speed transmission.
Available on all but the Power Wagon are two versions of an inline 6-cylinder Cummins Turbodiesel. One is high-output. Both use a 6-speed automatic transmission to rotate the wheels.
The government doesn’t estimate mileage for heavy-duty trucks. However, don’t expect anything outside of the teens.
Pricing for the 2500 is listed first: 2500 price/3500 price.
