No one should be surprised the 2022 Volvo XC40 is returning virtually unchanged. Launched as a 2019 model, it still looks and feels fresh.

Volvo’s smallest SUV, the XC40 vies for attention in the midst of rivals like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, and Lexus UX.
We like the XC40 for its impressive list of standard equipment, memorable styling, solid array of driver aids, and sensible management of interior space.
Volvo organizes the XC40 by powertrain and trim level.
Two powertrains use a version of Volvo’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission with selectable drive modes.
The T4 version generates 187 horsepower to motivate the front wheels (FWD). With the T5, the pony count is 248 hp spread across all four wheels (AWD).
Government-estimated fuel economy for the T4 is 23 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 26 mpg in mixed driving.
With all four wheels pulling the load, the T5 doesn’t give up much mileage ground. Its estimated fuel numbers are 22 mpg/30 mpg/25 mpg.
Three trim levels (Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription) can be armed with either powertrain.
2022 Volvo XC40 Momentum (starting at $34,100)
The 2022 Volvo XC40 Momentum starts at $34,100.
The listed price is for the T4. Stepping up to the T5 AWD pushes up the price to $36,100.
Standard are 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with active bending, high-beam assist, LED fog lights with Cornering, and rain-sensing wipers.
Also included are single-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, adjustable power steering, and auto-dimming mirrors (rearview and outboard).
Other features are cruise control, 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather seating, and heated front seats.
A 9-inch vertical touchscreen, an 8-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and four USB ports within the infotainment system.
The driver aids are rear park assist, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. Also included are rear cross-traffic alert with auto braking, lane-keeping assist with steering, and driver-attention warning.
You can add the $750 Climate Package with heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and high-pressure headlight washers to any trim level.
Toss in another $2,400 for the Premium Package. It adds dual-zone automatic climate control, an 8-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, Google Maps navigation, keyless entry with push-button start, and wireless phone charging.

2022 Volvo XC40 Momentum includes:
- Adjustable power steering – This allows the driver to dial down the amount of steering assistance the power-steering system provides.

The price listed is for the T4. Upgrading to the T5 has a base price of $41,350.
R-Design loses the full leather seating but gains all the features from Momentum’s Premium Package.
Volvo equips R-Design with a unique dynamic chassis.
It also adds 19-inch alloy wheels, Nappa leather-trimmed front seats with Nubuck inserts, a faux-leather rear seat, and various black exterior elements.
For $1,450, you can add the Advanced Package to R-Design or Inscription. It includes the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving assistance, a surround-view camera, and more.

2022 Volvo XC40 R-Design includes:
- Dual-zone automatic climate control – A set-it-and-forget-it system, it divides the vehicle into left and right regions. It provides separate temperature settings for each region. Once set, it automatically maintains the preset temperatures.
- Keyless entry – If the key fob is on your person, the doors automatically unlock when you touch the door handle. Push-button start is paired with keyless entry.
- Smartphone charging – You can charge any Qi-compatible smartphone without using a cable.

The listed price is for the T4. Opting for the T5 will cost $41,850.
Inscription loses the R-Design’s black exterior elements but adds back the full-leather seating. It also reverts to 18-inch alloy wheels.
Inscription then adds a power panoramic moonroof, real-wood interior accents, chrome exterior trim, and a crystal gear-shift knob.
