For those not concerned with maximum cargo space, the 2023 BMW X4 offers all the fun and excitement of the X3 but with a fastback look that gives it a coupe-like appearance.
Small and nimble, the X4 is easy to maneuver in tight urban confines, yet it can comfortably accommodate four passengers (or five in a pinch) and some gear. That sloping rear hatch cuts into cargo space and rear-seat headroom, but not horribly.
There are three X4 models to choose from, each delineated by engine size: the 248-horsepower X4 xDrive30i, 382-hp X4 M40i, and the 473-hp X4 M. All feature BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system (AWD) standard.
Comparison shoppers should check out the Audi Q5 Sportback, Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, Infiniti QX55, and the Porsche Macan.
2023 BMW X4 xDrive30i (starting at $53,400)
The 2023 BMW X4 xDrive30i has driving in mind. Its standard AWD system is not only helpful in snow but designed to favor the rear wheels when driving on dry pavement. Sending more power to the rear wheel means sportier performance when pushing through twisting back roads, something enthusiast drivers know well.
BMW’s Driving Dynamics Control features Sport, Comfort, and Eco Pro modes, allowing the driver to vary throttle input, shift points, and steering feel. Brake-drying technology helps clear water from the brake discs, while Start Off Assist prevents the X4 from rolling backward when stopped on an incline. Hill Descent Control helps maintain a constant slow speed when negotiating steep downhills.
The X4 comes nicely equipped, riding on wide 19-inch run-flat tires and fantastic-looking Y-spoke alloy wheels. Also standard is an auto-dimming driver’s side mirror, a passenger side tilt-down mirror, a power tailgate, and power-folding heated side mirrors.
Additional features on the base X4 include deep-tinted rear privacy glass, a massive panoramic moonroof, full adaptive LED headlights, and rain-sensing wipers.
With an eye toward advanced safety, the BMW X4 touts forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, a blind-spot monitor, and automatic high-beam headlights.
Also standard is a government-mandated rear backup camera and front and rear parking sensors.
The X4’s cabin is a pleasant place to relax, with supportive power front sport seats covered in perforated synthetic leather upholstery. Inside, you’ll find a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, and memory for the driver’s seat and side mirrors.
The X4’s tri-zone automatic climate controls include a rear-seat panel and vents. Another cool feature is the car’s remote key fob, which consists of a memory feature for holding the last user’s settings for things like climate, radio presets, driver’s seat, and mirrors.
BMW’s excellent Live Cockpit Pro comes standard, bringing a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, cloud-based navigation, and a second 12.3-inch screen for displaying infotainment and vehicle system information.
Speaking of infotainment, the X4 has wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, plus SiriusXM satellite radio, Bluetooth streaming, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.
Speaking the words “Hey, BMW” brings to life an onboard personal assistant capable of performing numerous functions all via voice command. This, for example, lets you set the climate control, get vehicle updates, or control the infotainment system.
If you choose not to upgrade to the available Harman Kardon audio, you’ll have to make do with a 12-speaker stock stereo backed by a 205-watt amp.
The X4 hosts a plethora of optional equipment and packages, including leather seats, several wheel upgrades, ventilated front seats, heated front and rear seats, a wireless charging pad, and multicolor ambient interior lighting.
An available Drive Recorder can capture and save events leading up to and after a collision, a valuable tool in a situation with no witnesses.
The Convenience Package adds Comfort Access keyless entry with proximity key fob and driver’s seat power lumbar support. The Premium Package, which includes the Convenience Package, adds a heated steering wheel and a choice of heated front or heated front and rear seats.
The Parking Assistance Package includes systems that allow the X4 to parallel or perpendicularly park itself while also projecting a 360-degree view of the area around the vehicle. It also helps when backing into a parking space previously held by the X4.
The Dynamic Handling Package is a must for die-hard driving enthusiasts. It includes Dynamic Damper Control and M Sport brakes with red or blue calipers.
