2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited: Choosing the Right Trim

The biggest news for the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, otherwise known as the 4-door Wrangler? The Sport model now gets standard air conditioning and Uconnect 4 with its 7-inch touchscreen. The better news is, even with inflation, the 2023 Sport only costs $120 more than the 2022 version. For the first time, every Wrangler model comes with air conditioning.

Jeep has streamlined the trim count for 2023. Gone are the Sport Altitude and Sahara Altitude. That leaves the Sport, the Willys Sport, the Sport S, the Willys, the Sahara, the Sport RHD, the Rubicon, the High Altitude (late availability), and the Rubicon 392.

We like the 4-door Wrangler for its family-friendly interior space, stubbornly high resale value, nearly peerless off-road capability, and many avenues for customizing. Also high on our list is the ability to remove the top and doors and fold down the windshield. Jeep also offers a 2-door Wrangler configuration, which we detail elsewhere.

With the introduction of the Ford Bronco, the 4-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited now has a serious rival in its space.

Engines and Drive Wheels

The base powertrain on most Wrangler trim levels is a 285-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. If you want to stir the transmission yourself (order a manual gearbox), this is the powertrain for you.

Jeep offers three optional powertrains on every trim level, with the V6 as the standard engine – all use an 8-speed automatic transmission to spin the wheels. They are a 270-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder ($2,000), a 260-hp 3.0-liter turbodiesel ($6,500), and a 375-hp eTorque mild-hybrid (MHEV) variant of the 3.6-liter V6 ($4,000). There are other available powertrains, but we will detail those when we get to the appropriate trim levels.

Except for the Rubicon and plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4-door models covered elsewhere, all Wrangler grades come with the Command-Trac part-time shift-on-the-fly 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system. It allows you to shift back and forth from rear-wheel drive (RWD) to 4WD while the vehicle is moving. It also has a 4-Lock setting that distributes torque evenly to both axles for improved off-road capability.

Here are the trim-level breakdowns.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport
(starting at $34,165)

The Sport is the most basic and affordable Wrangler Unlimited. Jeep targets buyers who want off-road capability without a lot of expensive extras. You must manually operate the windows, door locks, headlights, and outboard mirrors.

The Sport includes 17-inch black-painted wheels, halogen headlights, fog lights, skid plates (for the fuel tank and transfer case), and the Sunrider soft top with a sunroof feature. Other features are three tow hooks, single-zone manual air conditioning, and a center console with cupholders and storage. Cloth-covered front bucket seats, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, and a tilt-and-telescope urethane steering wheel (with audio controls) are part of the package. Unexpectedly, push-button and cruise control are standard as well.

When you are back from the muck, you can hose out the interior floor, thanks in part to removable carpet and drain plugs. Cruise control is included.

Operating the infotainment system is easy through the Uconnect 4 interface with a 7-inch touchscreen. It also features an 8-speaker audio system, three 12-volt power ports, two USB ports, Bluetooth, and voice-command for smartphones. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, too.

As for safety technology, you must be satisfied with only government-mandated features like stability control, antilock brakes, a rearview camera, traction control, and so forth. However, hill-start assist is also standard.

Options

There are plenty of options in the 4-door 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. Most, however, are dealer-installed and carry the Mopar label. You can add the 3-piece hardtop ($1,695), a snorkel for fording water ($795), satellite-radio capability ($295), and more.

You can also replace the Command-Trac 4WD with the full-time Select-Trac that automatically transfers engine torque to the wheels with the best grip.

Adding the $1,595 destination fee to the Sport base price brings the total to $35,760. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to about $643 per month. See 2023 Wrangler Unlimited Sport models for sale

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport includes:

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay – These features allow your smartphone to interface with your vehicle. Not only can you access the music on your phone, but you can also send messages, receive messages, make calls, and so forth through the vehicle’s media system.

Command-Trac – A part-time 4WD system, Command-Trac allows you to shift while moving from RWD to 4WD and back as needed. It also provides a 4-Lock mode that evenly distributes engine torque to both axles.

Tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel – This allows the driver to set the steering wheel’s height and distance.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Willys Sport
(starting at $36,475)

More of an option package for the Sport, the Willys Sport turns up the off-road capability with a few upgrades. For example, it has a rac-Lok limited-slip rear differential, BFGoodrich 32-inch mud-terrain tires, and Rubicon shocks and rock rails. Special Willys graphics and 17-inch black alloy wheels are also included.

The options copy those of the Sport.

Adding the destination fee to the Willys Sport base price equals $38,070. Financing for 60 months at 3% interest with no money down works out to about $684 per month. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Willys Sport models for sale

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Willys Sport includes:

32-inch tires – BFGoodrich designed these mud-terrain tires for enhanced traction.

Trac-Lok – Jeep’s limited-slip rear differential senses when a rear wheel is slipping and sends more torque to the other wheel with better traction.

Willys graphics – These include a hood decal and unique 4×4 rear swing-door graphic.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport S
(starting at $37,365)

Building on the Sport, the Sport S introduces some additional creature comforts to the Wrangler. For instance: power windows, power door locks, and heated outboard mirrors are standard on the 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport S.

The Sport S gains 17-inch bright aluminum wheels, deep-tinted rear windows, auto-on/off headlights, remote keyless entry, and a wrapped steering wheel. Also standard is an anti-theft alarm.

A broader selection of options and option packages is available. They include the Safety Group ($1,145) with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear-park assist, and LED taillights. The Advanced Safety Group ($945) adds forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and high-beam assist.

Opting for the 8.4-inch Premium Audio Group ($2,195) gets you an 8.4-inch touchscreen, a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, navigation, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and more. For $1,295, you can pick up LED headlights and fog lights.

Select-Trac is still an option.

Adding the destination fee to the Sport S base price equals $38,960. At 3% interest, financing for 60 months with no money down works out to roughly $700 per month. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport S models for sale

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport S includes:

Remote keyless entry – You can unlock and lock the vehicle remotely when in range using the key fob.

Auto-on/off headlights – Photosensors detect a reduction in daylight, which automatically engages the headlights and taillights. The system extinguishes the lights when an appropriate amount of daylight returns.

Available safety technology – With option packages, you can add forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and more.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Willys
(starting at $40,760)

Basically, Jeep takes the extra Willys Sport off-road features and adds them to the Sport S content to create the Willys. However, the Willys also gains LED headlights and LED fog lights.

Options for the Sport S are available.

Adding the destination fee to the Willys’ base price totals $42,355. Financing for 60 months at 3% interest with no money down works out to a monthly payment of about $761. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Willys for sale

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara
(starting at $44,320)

The Sahara adds more style and convenience to the Sport S. It gains headlight rings, tubular side steps, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, and proximity keyless entry. Jeep also includes a HomeLink transceiver, a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, a 115-volt household power outlet, and satellite-radio capability.

Jeep also adds the Uconnect 4C interface with an 8.4-inch touchscreen and navigation.

In addition to the options remaining from the Sport S, the Sahara offers a body-colored 3-piece top ($2,695). Select-Trac is still an option as well.

Adding the $1,595 destination fee to the Sahara’s base price brings the total to $45,915. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to about $825 per month. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara models for sale

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara includes:

Dual-zone automatic climate control – A set-and-forget system, it divides the 4-door Wrangler into left and right regions, providing separate temperature settings for each zone. Once set, it automatically maintains the preset temperatures.

Proximity keyless entry – If the key fob is on your person, the doors automatically unlock when you approach. Push-button start pairs with proximity keyless entry.

HomeLink – This universal transceiver offers programming for your automatic garage door and other functions like your home’s interior light operation.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport RHD
(starting at $45,595)

Catering to rural mail carriers, the Wrangler Unlimited Sport RHD is right-hand drive. To the Sport, it adds a black hardtop, proximity keyless entry, heated power outboard mirrors, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The equipment list includes a rear-window wiper, washer, and defroster.

Adding the destination fee to the RHD base price totals $47,190. Financing for 60 months at 3% interest with no money down works out to a monthly payment of approximately $848. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport RHD models for sale

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
(starting at $46,000)

Among Wrangler models, the Rubicon shines brightest for off-road capability. It’s the Big Kahuna. It builds on the Sahara.

It qualifies for the same group of engines as the Sport and Sahara. Jeep does beef up its off-roading creds. For example, its 4WD system is Jeep’s Rock-Trac part-time system engineered for low-gear rock crawling. The full-time Rock-Trac 4WD system is optional.

The off-road extras don’t end there. Jeep also arms the Rubicon with Tru-Lok locking front and rear Dana axles and a 4.10:1 rear-axle ratio. Also standard are a front electronic disconnecting sway bar and an Off-Road Plus mode with unique throttle input, transmission mapping, and traction control. Rock rails make the cut, too. BFGoodrich all-terrain tires wrap around 17-inch alloy wheels, and premium cloth covers the seats.

The list of options doesn’t stray from that of the Sahara.

Adding the $1,595 destination fee to the Rubicon base price brings the total to $47,595. If you finance with no money down for 60 months at 3% interest, it works out to a monthly payment of about $855. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon models for sale

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon Includes:

Rock-Trac – This 4WD system works great in low-speed, boulder-crawling conditions.

Disconnecting front sway bar – Electronically controlled with a button push, this sway bar disconnects to allow for greater front wheel articulation for intense off-roading.

Tru-Lok axles – These axles can lock, allowing both wheels on each axle to spin at the same speed to provide enhanced traction off-road.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude
(starting at $53,415)

In the High Altitude, Jeep has created a higher-end Wrangler. Its base engine is the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. The V6 eTorque MHEV is a $250 upcharge, while the 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel will set you back $4,000. It reverts to the Command-Trac 4WD system.

More or less building on the Sahara, it adds 20-inch alloy wheels, a body-color 3-piece hardtop, Nappa leather seats, and LED exterior lights (headlights, taillights, fog lights, and DRLs). Its heated outboard mirrors include integrated turn signals. It provides side steps, a rear window wiper, washer, and defroster. An auto-dimming rearview mirror is standard, too.

For the first time, the Safety Group with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear-park assist is standard. However, the Advanced Safety Group is still optional.

You can replace the Sunrider soft top with the Sky One-Touch Power Top for $2,050.

Adding the destination fee to the High Altitude base price equals $55,010. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to about $988 per month. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude models for sale

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited High Altitude includes:

Auto-dimming rearview mirror – Using photosensors, it recognizes bright headlights closing from behind, automatically dimming their reflection.

Nappa leather seating – This full-grain leather undergoes a unique tanning process rendering it softer and more pliable than other leather.

Available power top – With the push of a button, a fabric panel covering the top slides open.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 392
(starting at $79,995)

No argument here: the Unlimited Rubicon 392 is the top dog among Jeep Wranglers. Jeep powers it with a 470-hp 6.4-liter V8. It also generates 470 lb-ft of torque. You can manually shift the 8-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Taking charge of the drive wheels is the full-time Select-Trac 4WD system.

Jeep has tossed virtually every option in the Wrangler armory into the Rubicon 392. This list includes remote start, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and both Safety Groups. The 3-piece body-color hardtop is standard, too.

Adding the $1,595 destination fee to the Rubicon 392 base price brings the total to $81,590. At 3% interest, financing for 60 months with no money down works out to a monthly payment of approximately $1,466. See 2023 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 392 models for sale
