Now in its fifth generation, the Land Rover Range Rover has been completely redesigned for 2023.
A new twist for this top-of-the-line Land Rover SUV is an available 3rd-row seat in the long-wheelbase (LWB) version. It’s the first time Range Rover has offered seating for seven.
Also available for order are a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Range Rover and a super luxurious Range Rover SV. And in 2024, look for a fully electric Range Rover EV to arrive.
The exterior styling of the 2023 Range Rover is evolutionary. It maintains the overall appearance of the 4th-generation SUV but does so in a somewhat futuristic way. As with the 4th generation, there’s not much in the way of bulges, character lines, or creases in the exterior wrapper.
The foundation is the new Modular Longitudinal Architecture, which Land Rover says improves the ride, handling, and noise insulation.
We like the Range Rover for its off-road prowess, commanding styling, and highly crafted cabin. During our time test driving both the turbo inline-6 and twin-turbo V8 variants, we found the power from either engine to be more than enough to tackle any type of driving situation. The V8 provides the Range Rover with more rapid acceleration, though the inline-6 proved extremely refined and offers better mileage.
All-wheel steering, hill-descent control, hill-launch assist, and an adaptive air suspension are standard on all Range Rover models, as is 4-wheel drive (4WD).
The air suspension keeps the Range Rover stable and nicely controlled, even during serious off-road adventuring. Meanwhile, the four-wheel steering helps make the admittedly large, tall, and heavy Range Rover far more nimble than you’d expect. This is especially appreciated when navigating tight parking spots, or negotiating rugged terrain.
This new 5th-generation Range Rover will be sold in these trim levels: SE, Autobiography, First Edition, and SV. Only the standard wheelbase (SWB) offers all three trims. The Range Rover PHEV is offered exclusively with the standard wheelbase.
Land Rover makes the Autobiography and First edition available with the LWB, while you can get the SE and Autobiography with the LWB Seven Seat.
The base price of the entry-level SE SWB with the inline 6-cylinder engine is $104,500. Moving to the highest trim, the base price for the LWB Range Rover SV with the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 starts at $218,300.
Power & Fuel Economy
Available in the SWB SE and the LWB Seven Seat is a 395-horsepower 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 cylinder mild-hybrid engine (MHEV). It includes a powerful regenerative battery and an integral motor/generator.
An 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, standard with all three available powertrains, directs torque to all four wheels.
A 523-hp 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 can also power the SWB SE and LWB Seven Seat, as well as being standard issue for all other grades regardless of the wheelbase.
The EPA rates the 3.0-liter mild-hybrid 6-cylinder Range Rover at is a 2022 holdover. Its fuel-economy estimates are 18 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg in combined driving.
Last year’s big engine, the supercharged 5.0-liter V8, has been replaced by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter. It’s rated by the EPA at 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway/18 mpg combined.
