2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid may be the perfect sedan. Its spacious interior and wealth of safety systems and creature comforts alone make it worth the price of admission. But, add in the impressive fuel economy of the hybrid powerplant, and you have to wonder why you would even consider the standard Camry unless, of course, you’re all about V6 muscle.

The Camry Hybrid trim range covers five models: LE, SE, SE Nightshade, XLE, and XSE. Although there is no V6 or TRD trim, buyers may be pleasantly surprised at the hybrid’s acceleration and overall performance.

All Camry Hybrid models use the same 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor/battery setup for a combined 208 horsepower. Unlike the non-hybrid Camry, the Camry Hybrid does not offer the option of all-wheel drive (AWD), and it uses a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) in place of an 8-speed automatic.

As good as it is, the Camry Hybrid has some competitors worth considering. They include the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Honda Accord Hybrid, and, though slightly smaller, the Toyota Corolla Hybrid.

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE: $28,355

The first of the Camry Hybrid lineup is the LE. It’s a well-equipped car ideal for those who don’t need many high-tech add-ons or upscale appointments.

The LE trim does have a bit of a rental car vibe from the outside, sporting 16-inch steel wheels and plastic wheel covers. However, look closer, and you’ll find auto-on/off low-beam LED headlights, power mirrors, variable intermittent wipers, and the Smart Key keyless entry system. With the Smart Key fob in your purse or pocket, you need only touch a button on the door handle to unlock the car and push a button on the dash to start the engine.

Due to the hybrid battery pack placement, the LE Hybrid has a smaller gas tank than its non-hybrid counterpart, at 13.2 gallons vs. 15.8.

The LE comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) 2.5+ suite of driver assists. The package includes full-speed-range adaptive cruise control that works at speeds as low as 1 mph and can even bring the vehicle to a complete stop.

Forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection is standard, as is automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beam headlights, and Road Sign Assist, which alerts the driver to important road sign information, such as the posted speed limit.

Lane-tracing assist works when using adaptive cruise control, centering the vehicle between lane markers to avoid drift. When not using cruise control, lane-departure warning includes a steering-assist feature that helps nudge the Camry back into its lane when detecting drift.

The LE also includes an integrated rear backup camera and a rear-seat reminder system that alerts the driver to check the rear seats before exiting the vehicle.

In basic creature comforts, the LE trim has most bases covered. Standard equipment includes dual-zone automatic climate control with humidity sensor, an electronic parking brake with hold feature, one-touch up/down power windows, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel with controls for the audio, cruise, and Bluetooth phone connectivity.

A 4.2-inch driver information display shows information for speed, fuel economy, adaptive cruise control settings, and hybrid readouts. A standard drive mode system includes settings for Eco, Normal, Sport, and an EV mode that allows the car to drive for a short distance at low speeds solely on electric power.

An 8-way power driver’s seat comes standard and includes power lumbar support, while the rear seats fold in a 60/40 split. The LE’s cabin includes sliding sun visor extensions, lighted mirrors in the visors, an overhead console with sunglass storage, and a rear window defroster.

A 7-inch color touchscreen covers infotainment duty. In addition to the 6-speaker AM/FM radio, the system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration, with the ability to support several connected Toyota service apps and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

The LE’s Audio Upgrade Package with Options adds a wireless charging pad, a power sunroof, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and the HomeLink universal remote.

The Cold Weather Package adds heated side mirrors, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel.

With the $1,095 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE costs $29,450. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $556. See 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE includes:

  • Dual-zone climate control – The LE’s dual-zone climate controls allow driver and passenger to create their climate zones. The system includes a humidity sensor to help keep the cabin comfortable and the windows fog-free.
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto – These permit the car’s infotainment system to pair with an Apple or Android smartphone, granting access to the mobile device’s apps, music, messages, and navigation features.
  • TSS 2.5 + – Toyota’s impressive suite of driver assists helps alert the driver to potentially hazardous situations and can even act to stop the vehicle before an accident can occur.
  • 8-way power driver’s seat – With its wide range of motion, this seat allows drivers of all sizes to find the perfect position. The seat includes power lumbar adjustment for better lower back support.

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE: $29,890

The SE trim takes all that’s good with the LE and adds a sportier look and a firmer sport suspension. This justifies the extra few thousand-dollar price premium.

Changes start outside the car, where the SE trim gains a black mesh lower grille insert, color-keyed rocker panels, black headlight bezels, color-keyed heated side mirrors, and 18-inch black alloy wheels. Also included are a color-keyed rear spoiler and a single exhaust with dual chrome tips.

Inside the cabin, the SE gains SofTex upholstered seats with cloth inserts while genuine leather covers the steering wheel, which also gets a set of paddle shifters. The SE’s tire-pressure monitor is a step above the LE’s and includes readouts for each tire.

For those seeking an even more distinct ride, the SE Nightshade Special Edition package brings unique 19-inch matte-bronze alloy wheels, the black mesh grille from the Camry TRD, black mirror caps, and a black rear spoiler, plus black surrounds for the headlights and taillights.

The Nightshade color pallet consists of three choices: Midnight Black, White, and Reservoir Blue.

As for options, the SE’s options and packages are the same as with the LE.

With the $1,095 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE costs $30,985. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $585. See 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid SE includes:

  • Sport suspension – With stiffer shocks and springs, the SE’s sport suspension delivers better cornering and handling without diminishing ride comfort.
  • 18-inch alloy wheels – These look much better than the LE’s smaller, 16-inch wheels with plastic covers. The SE’s larger, 18-inch tires also improve cornering and traction but lessen overall fuel economy.
  • Heated side mirrors – These keep frost and snow from building up on the side mirrors and are activated with the rear defroster.
  • Nightshade Edition – The SE gets an even bolder look without going overboard.

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE: $33,245

The XLE brings more luxury and optional upgrade packages by expanding on the LE’s standard equipment.

Included as standard on the XLE are full LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, and a single exhaust with a chrome tip.

Additional driver assists include a blind-spot monitor and rear-cross traffic alert.

Inside the cabin, the XLE’s infotainment system gets a more prominent, 9-inch touchscreen with access to additional connected services such as Remote Connect, which allows your smart devices to remote start and lock/unlock and locate your parked Toyota.

The XLE gains a larger, 7-inch driver information display, a wireless charging pad, rear-seat air vents, leather upholstery, and heated front seats. Additional upgrades include an 8-way power passenger seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and wood interior accents.

XLE customers can add a 9-speaker JBL audio system, a power sunroof, GPS navigation, auto-leveling adaptive headlights, and a heated steering wheel.

The Driver Assist Package adds the Bird’s-Eye View Camera technology, heated and ventilated front seats, Intelligent Clearance Sonar with automatic emergency braking, and a 10-inch color head-up display.

With the $1,095 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE costs $34,340. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $648. See 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE includes:

  • Blind-spot monitor – Detects vehicles driving next to the Camry and alerts the driver with audible and visual warnings, helping minimize unsafe lane changes.
  • Rear cross-traffic alert  – This system monitors traffic crossing behind the vehicle and alerts the driver when the car is in reverse.
  • Available JBL audio – Backed by an 800-watt amplifier, the XLE’s upgraded JBL audio system touts nine speakers, including a powered subwoofer.
  • Available auto-leveling adaptive headlights – These automatically level for the best light distribution and swivel in the direction of the front wheels, helping illuminate dark corners before entering.

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE: $33,795

The XSE is the most distinctive hybrid trim, building off the SE as the XLE does with the LE.

Above the SE’s standard fare, the XSE adds full LED headlights, a gloss-black grille with mesh insert, 19-inch gloss black wheels, and color-keyed heated outside mirrors. The XSE includes as standard a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert.

Interior upgrades include a wireless charging pad, rear-seat air vents, a 7-inch driver information display, unique patterned metal interior trim, an 8-way power passenger seat, heated front seats, and leather upholstery with an XSE exclusive red leather option.

The XSE gets the same infotainment upgrade as the XLE: a 9-inch color touchscreen with additional connected services.

As for options, the XSE and XLE offer the same packages and stand-alone equipment, except for the XSE’s two-tone paint option, featuring a black painted roof.

With the $1,095 destination charge, the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE costs $34,890. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to about $658. See 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE models for sale near you

2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE includes:

  • Steering-wheel paddle shifters – These give the driver more control when selecting simulated gearshifts from the CVT.
  • Wireless charging pad – Allows wireless charging of compatible devices.
  • Available power sunroof – An excellent way to add more light and fresh air to the cabin without lowering the windows.
  • Available two-tone paint – This adds another level of distinction to the Camry Hybrid.

FAQ

  • What is the best 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid trim?

Given its standard and available feature set, we think most people will be fine with the least expensive LE trim. The LE also achieves the best fuel economy of the bunch.

Those seeking a more luxurious ride should opt for the XLE with all the optional equipment, while those seeking a more distinctive ride should look to the SE Nightshade Edition or XSE.

  • How many MPGs does the 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid get?

The Toyota Camry Hybrid LE earns an EPA-estimated 51 mpg city/53 mpg highway/52 mpg combined. All other trims get a notably lower estimate of 44 mpg city/47 mpg highway/46 mpg combined.

If you’re wondering why the big difference in fuel economy between trims, you can thank the LE’s smaller 16-inch tires. Smaller tires have less rolling resistance and thus require less effort to move.

  • Which 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid offers the most safety?

In crash testing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Toyota Camry Hybrid an overall five-star rating, giving it five stars in the frontal, side-impact, and rollover crash tests.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) feels similarly, giving the Camry Hybrid its best score of Good in every category and awarding it a Top Safety Pick+ designation.

As for which trim is the safest, the more driver assists, the better. Our pick would be the XLE or XSE with the optional Driver Assist package.
