2023 Volkswagen ID.4: Choosing the Right Trim

VW expands the trim-level selections for the returning 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 fully electric vehicle (EV). The Standard trim joins the lineup at the bottom end with a smaller battery and less range. The new Pro S Plus tops the trim levels now.

The grade arrangement for the 2023 ID.4 begins with the Standard and then ranges up to the Pro, Standard S, Pro S, and Pro S Plus.

The infotainment touchscreen now is the 12-inch display available as an option on last year’s ID.4. Otherwise, some new paint colors, wheel designs, and an upgraded center console pretty well sum up this year’s enhancements. Oh, and VW now builds the ID.4 in Tennessee.

All but the Standard and Standard S come with an 82-kWh battery array with 288 pouch-style cells. A 201-horsepower electric motor motivates the rear wheels (RWD). With RWD, the estimated maximum range is 275 miles.

You can add all-wheel drive (AWD) to any Pro grade for $3,800. With AWD, Volkswagen adds a second motor to the front axle, boosting the pony count to 295 and reducing the maximum estimated range to 255 miles.

Included in the price of every ID.4 are three years of 30-minute DC fast-charging sessions at any Electrify America charging station. At this writing, the ID.4 still qualifies for a $7,500 federal tax credit.

While not the most exciting to drive among compact EV crossovers, the ID.4 is a competent, traditionally styled 5-passenger people hauler. We appreciate its comprehensive list of technologies.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Standard
(starting at $37,495)

Last year’s bottom-rung ID.4 model was the $40,760 Pro. In a move to provide a starting price well below the $40,000 mark, Volkswagen introduced the Standard trim with a smaller 62-kWh battery. However, the smaller battery translates into a reduction in the estimated range to 208 miles. The power output remains at 201 hp.

Despite filling the ID.4’s entry-level spot in the grade lineup, the Standard is impressively equipped. It arrives with 19-inch alloy wheels and exterior LED lights (auto on-off headlights, daytime running lights, and taillights). Also standard are rain-sensing wipers, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, cloth/leatherette seating, and heated front seats.

Keeping passengers comfortable regardless of the outside temperature is dual-zone automatic climate control. Entertaining them falls to an infotainment system with a 12-inch touchscreen with navigation, a 7-speaker audio system, and Bluetooth. VW has integrated wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, and four USB ports, wireless phone charging, and Wi-Fi hot spot capability also make the cut.

An auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated outboard mirrors, and heated windshield-wiper nozzles come equipped, too.

Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive safety bundle leads off the ID.4’s long list of driver-aid technologies. It includes lane-keeping assist with steering, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and traffic-sign recognition. Park Assist and Travel Assist are also part of the package. The automaker supplements IQ.Drive features with high-beam assist, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and front/rear park assist. Blind-spot monitoring with steering and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, as well.

Volkswagen doesn’t offer any factory-installed options for the Standard.

Adding the $1,295 destination fee to the Standard base price brings the total to $38,790. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to about $697 per month. See 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Standard models for sale

The only real difference between the Standard and Pro is the Pro’s larger battery and increased range. Furthermore, the Pro versions have fast-charging capability for public-charging stations. AWD is optional and includes a heated windshield and tow hitch.

Adding the destination fee to the Pro base price equals $43,790. Financing for 60 months at 3% interest with no money down works out to about $787 monthly. See 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro models for sale

Tri-zone automatic climate control – Separating the vehicle into three areas (front right, front left, and rear), the system allows occupants to set the temperatures in each zone. It then automatically maintains those preset temperatures.

Power-folding mirrors – Electronically controlled, these mirrors can fold against the sides of the vehicle with the push of a button. Furthermore, you can set them so they automatically fold when the ignition is turned off and then fold back to their functioning position when the ignition is engaged.

FAQ

What is the best 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 trim level?

If you can live with its shorter range and don’t care about AWD, the new ID.4 Standard will probably fulfill your needs. If, however, you need more range and want AWD, the Pro is the way to go. Both the Standard and the Pro are similarly equipped. Picking the Pro is about more range, AWD, and quicker acceleration.

Which 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 trim level delivers the best mpg?

For EVs, the U.S. government uses a special measurement for fuel efficiency called miles per gallon equivalent or MPGe. The EPA hasn’t released the MPGe numbers for the Standard or Standard S with the smaller battery. We believe this powertrain will produce the best fuel economy.

The RWD Pro is rated by the EPA at 116 MPGe in the city, 98 MPGe on the highway, and 107 MPGe in combined driving. The RWD Pro S and Pro S Plus lose roughly 5 MPGe across the board. AWD reduces the mileage by another 5 MPGe or so.

Which 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 trim level is the safest?

After receiving the top score of Good in each of its safety scenarios, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the VW ID.4 a Top Safety Pick+.

Every ID.4 comes with IQ.Drive, which features lane-keeping assist with steering, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and traffic-sign recognition. Park Assist and Travel Assist are also part of the package.

Supplementing the IQ.Drive features are high-beam assist, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and front-rear park assist. Blind-spot monitoring with steering and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, as well. The Standard S and Pro S add adaptive headlights. Stepping up to the Pro S Plus gains you a surround-view camera.
