2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin: Choosing the Right Trim

All new in 2022, the Volvo C40 Recharge returns for 2023 with added trim levels. We also expect to see a front-wheel-drive (FWD) version later in the model year, perhaps priced below $50,000.

The Twin Core and Plus trims join the previous year’s C40 Twin Ultimate grade. As was the case in its first model year, you order the C40 Recharge online and have it shipped to your local Volvo dealer.

The C40 Recharge Twin remains the only Volvo available exclusively as an EV.

We like the C40 for its 402-horsepower all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, eye-catching exterior styling, functional cabin, and cutting-edge technology. Also high on our list is the free 250 hours of DC fast-charging at Electrify America charging stations.

Making the C40 Recharge Twin go is the 2-motor 78-kWh battery powertrain borrowed from the XC40 Recharge. One motor drives the front wheels, and another motivates the rear wheels. Hence, eAWD.

The EPA rates the 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge at 94 MPGe in the city, 80 MPGe on the highway, and 87 MPGe in combined driving. With a maximum range of 226 miles on a charge, the C40 slightly betters the Ford Mustang Mach-E AWD’s 224 miles but falls short of the Volkswagen ID.4 Pro AWD’s 251-mile range.

Here’s how the 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin’s three trim levels differ.

2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Core
(starting at $55,300)

Although the Core is the base grade, it arrives nicely equipped. Standard are 19-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lights (tail lights, daytime running lights, auto-on/off headlights), and rain-sensing wipers. Also included are a panoramic moonroof, proximity keyless entry with push-button start, auto-dimming mirrors (rearview and dual outboard), and one-pedal drive.

Drivers will appreciate the 12.3-inch digital gauge, driver-information display, and the 8-way power-adjustable seat, including lumbar controls. The front seats are heated, too.

Dual-zone automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, and four USB ports are also standard.

A Google-based infotainment interface includes a 9-inch vertical touchscreen, an 8-speaker audio system, Bluetooth, and satellite radio capability. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard.

Volvo provides a technology-packed bundle of safety and driver assistance features. They include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Also standard are rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, driver-awareness alert, oncoming-lane mitigation, and road-sign assist. Volvo includes rear-park assist, too.

A Climate Package ($1,100) is available on the Core and Plus trims. It adds headlight washers, a heated rear seat, a heated steering wheel, and a heat pump that uses battery heat to warm the C40 Recharge interior.

Adding the $1,095 destination fee to the Core base price brings the total to $56,395. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to about $1,013 per month. See 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Core models for sale

2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Core includes:

Rain-sensing wipers – When the system senses moisture on the windshield, it automatically engages the wipers. The wiper speed adjusts according to the volume of the rain.

Proximity keyless entry – If the key fob is on your person, the doors automatically unlock when you approach the C40 Recharge. Push-button start pairs with proximity keyless entry.

One-pedal drive – This function allows the C40 Recharge driver to not only accelerate by depressing the accelerator pedal but also come to a complete stop by fully releasing it.

2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Plus
(starting at $56,850)

For only $1,550 more than the Core, the Plus adds plenty of extras. For example, LED fog lights, front-park assist, a 12-volt power port in the cargo area, and power-folding rear-seat headrests are standard.

Also included are a surround-view camera, a HomeLink transceiver, an 8-way power-adjustable passenger’s seat, and upgraded cloth seating.

Adding the destination fee to the Plus base price totals $57,945. With no money down, financing for 60 months at 3% interest works out to about $1,041 per month. See 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Plus models for sale

2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Plus includes:

HomeLink – This universal transceiver offers programming for your automatic garage door and other functions like your home’s interior lights.

Surround-view camera – It provides a 360-degree bird’s-eye view around the C40 Recharge. This technology is particularly valuable when parking.

LED fog lights – Mounted lower than the headlights, these lights aim downward to illuminate beneath the fog layer. LEDs illuminate a broader and longer area than regular incandescent lights.

2023 Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Ultimate
(starting at $60,100)

The top dog among C40 Recharge grades, the Ultimate comes out swinging with adaptive cruise control and Volvo’s Pilot Assist. Also included is the Climate Package from Core and Plus. The ultimate also comes with a 13-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system and 20-inch alloy wheels standard.

Adding the $1,095 destination fee to the Ultimate base price equals $61,195. Financing for 60 months at 3% interest with no money down works out to approximately $1,100 per month. See 2023 C40 Recharge Twin Ultimate models for sale
