2024 BMW X7: Choosing the Right Trim

The 2024 BMW X7 delivers full-size accommodations and luxury steeped in the tradition of BMW. It’s an SUV that places as much emphasis on performance as functionality, something BMW owners with growing families will appreciate.

The 3-row X7 isn’t as roomy as larger domestic rivals like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator; it’s also not as gargantuan, meaning it’s easier to park and maneuver, a plus for those living in confined urban areas.

The X7 offers a choice of three trims: xDrive40i, M60i, and Alpina XB7. All come standard with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive (AWD) and feature potent engines delivering impressive acceleration.

The X7 is not alone in its mission and faces stiff competition from other range-topping SUVs, like the Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and Lexus LX. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer might also be an excellent option, although it doesn’t carry the same luxury cred as the X7.

Prices provided are new car MSRP at the time of publishing.

2024 BMW X7 xDrive40i: $81,900

With 375 horsepower under the hood, even the entry-level X7 is no slouch. It delivers the power most drivers require for passing and merging, even if it’s not as quick as its more powerful siblings. It’s also not as thirsty, with the X7 xDrive40i’s EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined rating getting four more miles out of a gallon over the M60i trim.

Along with its standard AWD, the X7 includes an adaptive air suspension and adaptive shock dampers that automatically adjust to smooth the ride when encountering rough or uneven pavement.

BMW’s Driving Dynamic Control lets the driver select between three performance modes: Eco Pro, Comfort, and Sport.

Exterior highlights include a power rear liftgate, adaptive LED headlights with auto high-beam control, LED fog lights, rain-sensing wipers with headlight control, plus heated power-folding side mirrors with driver’s side auto-dimming.

You can lower or raise all the windows from outside the vehicle via the key fob or by keeping your hand on the door handle.

Rounding out the xDrive40i’s exterior features are front and rear parking sensors, 21-inch alloy wheels wrapped in run-flat tires, a panoramic glass moonroof, and the Comfort Access system that unlocks the doors and enables the push button start without having to remove the key fob from your purse or pocket.

The X7’s interior is awash in luxury and technology, starting with its multicontour front seats that include memory, power side bolsters, and heating elements.

Sensafin upholstery looks and feels like leather but is more durable.

The front seats feature the ingenious Travel and Comfort system built into the back of each seat. The system includes a bracket for supporting accessories like a coat hanger, tablet holder, or folding table. It also contains a USB-C charging port.

Other standard amenities include a power-adjustable steering column with a heated sport steering wheel, heated armrests, multicolor ambient lighting, a wireless charging pad, a head-up display, and 4-zone automatic climate control.

BMW’s Dynamic Cruise Control is also standard, but don’t mistake it for adaptive cruise control, part of the Driving Assistance Professional Package.

Dynamic Cruise Control is just standard speed control that doesn’t let the X7 increase in speed when descending a hill. This system maintains the driver’s desired speed but not the distance between the X7 and the car ahead.

Filed under “visual pop” is an enormous single-piece curved glass screen incorporating a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch central display.

The larger screen serves as the infotainment hub. It comes powered by the iDrive 8 operating system controlled by the iDrive touchpad, voice commands, or by touching various points on the screen.

The system includes augmented reality navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L, an AM/FM stereo, and a 205-watt, 10-speaker audio system.

BMW’s Connected Package Professional adds essential data, such as real-time traffic updates, on-street parking information, and BMW remote service, including stolen vehicle recovery.

Along with a long list of federally mandated safety systems, the X7 comes standard with forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection. When turning right, the system can observe the front and rear paths, helping avoid bicycles or pedestrians traveling parallel to the vehicle.

Additional driver aids include lane-departure warning, a blind-spot monitor, Parking Assistant self-parking assistant, and Backup Assistant that can retrace the vehicle’s course after leaving a parking space and automatically return to it while backing up.

Being a BMW, even the entry-level X7 offers numerous upgrades and option packages.

The Dynamic Handling Package adds features like navigation-based speed adjustment (Active Comfort Drive) and Integral Active Steering, which improves the turning radius and cornering depending on speed.

The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop/go, Traffic Jam Assist (can steer and brake the vehicle without driver input during low-speed driving situations), Active Lane Keeping, and Highway Assistant, allowing hands-free highway driving up to 85 mph.

The Premium Package adds soft-close doors, rear power side window shades, a 16-speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound audio system, and gesture control. Buyers can upgrade to a 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound system within this package.

The Executive Package builds off the Premium, adding massaging front seats, cut-glass control elements, a panoramic Sky Lounge LED roof, and heated and cooled cup holders.

The Parking Assistance Package brings an advanced self-parking system that can be operated from outside the vehicle and a 360-degree monitor with a 3D view.

The Climate Comfort Package adds heated rear seats, 5-zone climate control, and ventilated front seats.

Other options include second-row captain’s chair seating, M Sport brakes and exhaust, Crystal Headlights, aluminum running boards, Merino leather upholstery, and an illuminated twin-kidney grille.

With the $995 destination fee, the 2024 BMW X7 xDrive40i costs $82,895. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to $1,564. See 2024 BMW X7 xDrive40i models for sale near you

2024 BMW X7 xDrive40i includes:

  • Panoramic moonroof – A great way to let in more sunlight and fresh air without opening the windows. A power sunshade covers the entire panel when a darker environment is preferred.
  • Augmented View navigation – Replaces the traditional navigation graphics with a live video stream of the view ahead, overlaying important information such as arrows that show when and where to turn.
  • Multicontour front seats – The X7’s sport seats include power side bolsters allowing drivers of all sizes to find a supportive and comfortable perch.

2024 BMW X7 M60i: $108,700

The X7 M60i has an abundance of M performance attributes, making it the go-to X7 for those who constantly feel the need for speed.

Under the hood, a turbocharged V8 engine increases output to 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. The M60i can dash to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, a second faster than the xDrive40i. That may not seem important until you remember that a car traveling 60 mph moves 88 feet per second, so a one-second difference results in a significant distance between the two.

Building off the X7 xDrive40i, the M60i borrows several features from the former’s optional equipment list, including an illuminated kidney grille and partial Merino leather interior. Also standard is the Premium Package, the Parking Assistant Package, and the Dynamic Handling Package.

M60i performance upgrades include an M Sport exhaust, M Sport brakes, 22-inch M alloy wheels, an M Sport suspension, and an M Sport differential. Shadowline exterior trim and an aerodynamic kit add visual appeal and functionality.

Capping off the M60i’s feature set is a 16-speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound audio system and an Alcantara headliner.

Options for the M60i mimic those of the xDrive40i, except where already part of the standard equipment list. Unique upgrades to the M60i include carbon-fiber interior trim and Marina Bay Blue metallic paint.

The 20-speaker, 1,500-watt Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound system becomes a standalone option.

With the $995 destination fee, the 2024 BMW X7 M60i costs $109,695. On a 60-month loan at 5% financing and $0 down, the monthly payment comes to $2,070. See 2024 BMW X7 M60i models for sale near you

2024 BMW X7 M60i includes:

  • Harman Kardon Surround Sound audio – With 16 speakers backed by a 464-watt amp, the M60i’s standard audio system is hard to beat unless you pony up $3,400 for the Bowers & Wilkins system.
  • M upgrades – BMW’s M performance division provides hardware to improve stopping power, deliver an intoxicating exhaust note, and help increase ability and stability during aggressive driving.
  • 523-hp V8 – The M60i’s turbocharged V8 engine delivers scintillating performance yet attains a 21 mpg highway fuel economy figure.

2024 BMW Alpina XB7: $149,400

The ultimate X7 is the limited-production Alpina XB7.

Building off the M60i, the XB7 bumps horsepower to 631 and torque to 590 lb-ft. It also trades Eco mode for a Sport+ mode in the Driving Dynamics Control and gets an Alpina Switch-Tronic 8-speed transmission with quick shift buttons.

Additional performance upgrades include an Alpina Sport suspension, Adaptive Driver with Alpina software with Active Roll Stabilization, and 23-inch Alpina Classic alloy wheels.

The XB7 receives a host of Alpina exterior modifications, including a unique front apron, rear spoiler, and rear diffuser.

Inside, the XB7 features a more Alpina-specific design, including a Nappa leather dash, Alpina Myrtle wood trim, and illuminated Alpina door sill finishers.

Almost every option on the M60i is standard on the Alpina, leaving just a few standalone items. They include a trailer hitch, an upholstery-colored Alcantara headliner, second-row captain’s chair seating, Shadowline exterior trim, and the Bowers & Wilkins audio upgrade.

FAQ

  • What is the best 2024 BMW X7 SUV trim?

The high-performance M60i is more lust-worthy, but the more affordable and more efficient xDrive40i — enhanced with a few option packages, perhaps — is still beyond capable and luxurious enough.

  • How many miles per gallon does the 2024 BMW X7 get?

The 2024 BMW X7 xDrive40i is rated by the EPA at 22 mpg combined (21 mpg city, 25 mpg highway).

The M60i sees figures drop to 18 mpg combined (16 mpg city, 21 mpg highway), while the Alpina XB7 has an EPA combined rating of 17 mpg (16 mpg city, 20 mpg highway).

  • Which 2023 BMW X7 trim offers the most safety?

The best X7 is any trim with the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package, which brings essential driver-assist systems that make everyone a safer driver.

Neither the U.S. government nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash-tested the X7 at this point. However, we’re reasonably confident that, like its smaller stablemates, the X5 and X3, the X7 will pass with flying colors.
