The BMW Z4 is an old-school luxury roadster with modern engineering and technology. It has two seats, a traditional soft-top, and a reasonable starting price compared to most of its class. Its closest rival is the discontinued Audi TT Roadster, but you could also compare it to the convertible variants of the Chevrolet Corvette and Jaguar F-Type. A much more affordable roadster possibility, but with significantly less power, is the Mazda MX-5 Miata.

If you’re getting the Z4 because it looks cool, you’ll be happy with the sDrive30i. However, if you want a serious sports car, the sportier M40i is well worth the extra cost. In either case, we recommend adding more safety tech via the Driving Assistance Package.

2024 BMW Z4 sDrive30i: $53,600
The sDrive30i is the base 4-cylinder model of the BMW Z4. Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine rated at 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Output is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Expect a 0-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds.
M Sport suspension and variable sport steering enhance the engaging driving experience of the Z4 sDrive30i, which comes equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels and a convertible soft-top.
Standard interior features in the base Z4 include SensaTec upholstery, a SensaTec dashboard, power-adjustable M Sport seats, a memory driver’s seat, an M Sport steering wheel, and dual-zone automatic climate control. You also get the Live Cockpit Professional digital gauge cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, SiriusXM, navigation, and a 10-speaker audio system.
The Z4 has some welcome standard safety features. Foremost among them are automatic high-beam headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and a forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. The Driving Assistance Package ($700) adds more safety tech, including parking sensors, Active Driving Assistant, active blind-spot detection, and lane-departure warning.
A Convenience Package ($600) and Premium Package ($3,000) are available, making the Z4 more luxurious. The Convenience Package adds Comfort Access keyless entry and lumbar support for the seats. The pricier Premium Package further adds a remote start, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, ambient lighting, adaptive LED headlights, Parking Assistant, and a head-up display.
The Dynamic Handling Package ($2,450) makes for a sportier drive with adaptive M suspension, an M Sport differential, and M Sport brakes with your choice of red or blue calipers. A Shadowline Package ($950) gives the Z4 a darker look with black mirror caps, extended Shadowline trim, and adaptive LED headlights.
Many individual options are available. Alpine White is the standard color; all other colors cost extra. Five metallic paint options are available for $650. A Vernasca synthetic leather interior is available for $1,500 in five colors; an Alcantara/leather black interior is available for $1,250.
Individual options of note include remote start ($300), a few 19-inch wheel options ($600), a Moonlight Black soft-top ($250), a Harman Kardon audio system ($875), wireless charging ($500), aluminum interior trim ($150), and ambient interior lighting ($250).

2024 BMW Z4 M40i: $66,300
The M40i is the enthusiast’s Z4. Under the hood lies a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine with an output of 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The M40i still has an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, but it hits 60 in only 3.9 seconds, more than a second more quickly than the Z4 sDrive30i.
Naturally, the 2024 BMW Z4 M40i comes standard with the contents of the Dynamic Handling Package (M Sport brakes and differential, adaptive M suspension) plus the Convenience Package (lumbar support, keyless entry).
Other standard features on the M40i and optional on the base trim include heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and Aluminum Tetragon trim. Options exclusive to the M40i trim include Frozen Grey II Metallic paint ($3,600) and 800M-style 19-inch wheels ($600).
Many options are identical between the two trims. These include Veransca synthetic leather ($1,500), the Driving Assistance Package ($700), and the Shadowline Package ($950). There’s still a Premium Package available, but it only costs $1,350 in the M40i because it already has several of its features standard.
