Anyone looking to tow, haul, or move big objects needs the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado HD pickup. Offered in 3/4-ton (2500) or one-ton (3500) configurations, the Silverado HD can tow up to 36,000 pounds when equipped with the dual-wheel rear axle. Models with the standard rear axle top out at around 22,500 pounds.
Configurations are nearly as complex as the trim line, offering rear-wheel or 4-wheel drive (4WD), single- or dual-wheel rear axles, three cab sizes, and two box lengths.
Buyers choose between a 401-horsepower 6.6-liter gas V8 producing 464 lb-ft of torque or a 470-hp 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 producing 975 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
For 2024, the LT and higher trims get a new dash and instrument cluster. It’s a bit of high-tech razzle-dazzle for an upscale truck.
The Silverado HD lines up against the usual suspects from Ford and Ram, as well as its GMC sibling, the Sierra HD. The Nissan Titan XD is also a minor competitor, a bit of a tweener for those who find the Silverado’s capabilities overkill.
Later in the year, the ZR2 joins the HD fleet. Like its half-ton twin, it will be geared toward off-roading and directly challenge the Ford F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX.
2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD WT: $43,400; 3500 HD WT: $44,600

The WT offers a choice of gas or diesel engine power, standard or long bed, with Regular, Double Cab, and Crew Cab configurations.
The 3500 models are similarly equipped but offer a dual rear wheel axle.
The WT features 17-inch steel wheels, vertical exterior trailering mirrors, a locking tailgate, heavy-duty suspension, black bumpers, front recovery hooks, and 12 fixed cargo tie-downs.

Optional safety equipment includes front and rear parking sensors, a lane-change alert, blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert.
Adaptive cruise control, a digital rearview mirror, and a bed view camera are available.
Sorting through the many options and packages, the WT provides steering-wheel audio controls, cruise control, power-adjustable trailering mirrors, a rear window defogger, and the EZ Lift power lock and release tailgate.
