The 2024 Dodge Hornet is no ordinary crossover. It features proportions that land it squarely between the subcompact and compact SUV categories. It shares its platform with the Alfa Romeo Tonale, giving it a leg-up on its more pedestrian competitors. The Italian pedigree brings more luxury and power than you’ll find in a Honda HR-V, Kia Seltos, or Mazda CX-30, but also a higher price tag.
The Hornet also offers an optional plug-in hybrid powertrain, giving it bragging rights alongside the Hyundai Tucson PHEV and the slightly larger Toyota RAV4 Prime and Ford Escape PHEV.
Customers can choose from four trims, two of which employ a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine good for a respectable 268 horsepower.
The R/T and R/T Plus get a turbocharged 1.3-liter 4-cylinder engine combined with a rear-mounted electric motor and plug-in hybrid system that allows up to 30 miles of pure-electric driving. The hybrid system also injects something Dodge calls PowerShot, which boosts performance with an instant torque injection from the electric motor, giving the Hornet R/T a 0-60 time of just 5.6 seconds.
All-wheel drive comes standard on all trim levels of the Dodge Hornet, although when in electric-only mode, the R/T trims revert to rear-wheel drive.

What’s New:
The plug-in hybrid R/T models join the GT, giving the Hornet better performance and fuel economy numbers, plus the ability to operate like an electric vehicle over short distances.
Our Recommendation:
While the hybrid R/T Hornet entices with its speed and economy, its price pushes it out of reach for many buyers. The GT Plus offers plenty of luxury and performance while keeping the cost in the mid-$30,000 range.
